Hi all,

Planning to record some (single person) interviews to be cut and used as narrative voice over in an HD project, later to be probably output on a standard DVD for the moment. Is it possible to record just sound on the HVX, saving card time? I read that standard DV format can supports 2 channels of 16-bit 48khz audio, which would probably give me a recording time of 32min on an 8gb card. Probably be a good idea to have an image as reference i guess but just wanted to know what my options are cause i havent got the camera just yet.

thanks,
stephen.

Sadly, you can't record just audio on the HVX. Video goes along regardless of if you want it or not...

Of course, you would get 32 minutes of DV footage on an 8gb card anyway, even with the video... so you should be fine.

No you cant record just sound. But you a right in thinking that you can record regular DVCPro with 2 channels of audio and get more time on the cards. Or you can just shoot DV to tape and get 2 channels of 16bit/48khz audio.

thanks Tony and ozduc. good to know. sound is sound so i guess that means that i wouldnt have no problem importing just the mxf audio clips recorded along (but excluding) a DV image into an HD timeline in FCP, right?

I've done this plenty of times to grab foley, sound effects, ect., just immediately strip the video and render out an AIFF or uncompressed WAV of the audio and start organizing your audio clips.
