Re: Just Smile and Nod.. shot by Todd up

Hey Todd:

Did you use the PS Technik mini 35 adapter on this? There were a few shots of Grampa and kid on the couch that had the DOF of 35mm.

Thanks, and good work.

Best, JIM.

Re: Just Smile and Nod.. shot by Todd up

hey jim
thanks for the compliment.

we did not use the pro 35 adaptor on this short film. the depth (or lack of it) was achieved by placing the boy as close to the camera as we could and have grandpa about 7 feet away, at the far end of the couch. we were zoomed in to a close up shot of grandpa with matt just entering the frame to make a "dirty over". you have to have something in the shot, usually very close to the lens, out of focus, to help create that look (small depth of field). even on film. we were always trying to shoot at a 2.8 also.

Todd,

Your opening scene in the kitchen parallels the type of parent/child vignettes I'll be shooting very soon (within the next few weeks). I've been looking into daylight color temperature options to shoot indoors during the day.

What did you use for lighting? What did you use for sound?

Re: Just Smile and Nod.. shot by Todd up

hey

the kitchen scene was shot during the day time so i used two main lights to add to the natural light coming throught the windows.

a 4k hmi was used to shoot throught the window that was in front of matt at the breakfast table. i had a piece of "light grid" diffusion in front of it to soften it.

there was a 1.2 hmi shooting through the second window which was over the kitchen sink. that light was side lighting the mother and father but was cut off of the back wall. this light also had a piece of "light grid" in front of it to soften it.

the 1.2 hmi was great because we could plug it in to a house because it only needs 15 amps.

the 4k needs a bit more power so we had to do a tie in to the house power at the fuse box.

if i had my way i would have use bigger lights but the producer said :o they did not have the money for the generator that we needed to supply power for the 12k hmi i wanted .. ha ha ha. next time....

i shot these first scenes with the camera set at 3200k and let the light go blue to contrast with the warm light at grandpa's.. we shot grandpa's in the day also with the camera set at 5500k and a tobacco #1 filter to help warm the shot up and ad to the 70's colors that the director wanted.

oh ya the sound was recorded in the kitchen with wires and not a boom mic.

Thanks Todd for the explanation. I wasn't sure what you meant by the statement above. Do you mean they had wired lavelier mics on their person?

Re: Just Smile and Nod.. shot by Todd up

Todd used to be a secret agent so he likes to call Lav's "wires" because he used to go into top secret rendezvous "wired". I guess he still is getting those nasty flashbacks ha ha..

That was one cool ass video. I loved it. It kept my attention the whole way through, thats always a good thing right there!

Re: Just Smile and Nod.. shot by Todd up

Thanks Jarred for posting the link up for Just Smile and Nod. It's so cool to hear positive feedbacks from people that aren't directly related to the project! Todd did an amazing job dp'ing the short. I think we broke the record for the amount of shots Todd has ever managed in one 12-hour day! And yes, the blocking in the kitchen required lavalier mikes.... :)
