Just shot a commercial

Quick tip.. when shooting men ask them to paper towel their face or wash their face - it removes the shine off the skin..
:-)

Zoom is a little quick for me when backing away from the houses.. but I do like the out of focus background at the beginning.

Dude, how many locations did you shoot? Hrs. spent? Did you have an hourly rate? I'm scared to ask what you charged. Let's just say that I just did a 4 minute piece. No formal interview setup. maybe 20 hours of editing. 1 - four hour shoot. I undercharged and came away w/ around 900 bucks.

this is going to be long.....

I didn't shoot any of the installation footage. It all came from a similar commercial that he shot about 6 years ago. I just took the footage, uprezzed it in AfterEffects and removed compression artifacts using the Algosuite, and then edited what I had.
If you had a problem with the fact that the installation footage gets kinda repetative or that there seems to be a need for shots that better coincide with the audio, don't blame me. If I shot it, it would have been better. :D

I charged $1700 for the whole thing. I must have been on crak when I set the price; this guy will easily get a $50,000+ return on this video within a year (two people that I've shown the video to have already asked for the phone number).

$1700 might seem like a lot, but it isn't by any means. I logged 130hrs on this project, I paid $100 for the lighting and boom mic assistance and I paid $145 for the music, so in the end I made about $11 an hour. Better than McDonalds, but still, this is video! It's worth much much more!

At the end I assembled the invoice and I was floored at how many hours I spent and how many things I had to do.

The thing that took the most amount of time was the animatics. I made all of the objects in Photoshop and then I imported to After Effects. Each animatic effect took me at least 3hrs. I saved the easiest ones for last and I got to reuse some of the animations twice, which saved me some time. But even so.
After Effects and Premiere aren't exactly married together too well. So I had to rough animate the sequences, export to a video, import in premiere and drop it where it's supposed to be, then go back to AE for any retiming. One animation I had to adjust 10 times before it worked.

The other thing that took forever was finding good sequences to use for the two main guys when they talked. The guy on the right (Billy Padrino) absolutely refused to take direction and do what I told him to do. I told him that we had to retake until he could say what he wanted to say without stuttering. The man didn't seem to understand the concept that splicing video together in 5 places to create one coherent paragraph is not a good way to do commercials. I told him that you do it until it's done right, but he refused. An hour of him yelling at me later, I said "fine, whatever. Let's move on." In the end I had to cut out some of his lines because splicing 5 clips together was lame. It turned out for the better though because I think the point comes across with less words anyways. Another thing I did was to cut clips while other things were going on over the video. Every time that an animatic appears or a picture displays over either one of them talking (Billy more than Joe) there is at least one splice being done of their footage underneath.

In reality, this project was one of the worst experiences of my young life, but I'm glad I had it. Sonrise Windows now has a video that will easily make them $50K. Now I have a resume piece that I'm really proud of, and with a bigger budget and crew I know I could do even better in the future(and not be so stressed).

lol, viewed it fine...do you all have mac's? i find many people with macs talk about how great they are, then are always trying to fix something or get a video to play/recognized, lol...i have yet to click on a video i cannot view. Even other PC people that can't view DVCPRO50, the codec'ed videos work fine on mine

You have deeply offended me sir, how dare you so carelessly put down an entire culture of mac user's. Don't you see how hurtful you're statements are to someone like me? I admit, I am such a hypocrite, I hype up my mac like none other, I tell my friends and my loved ones about how it changed my life and created a creative revolution in my home. The truth however is far more sour, as I surf dvxuser I find that my poor mac can not attempt to recognize even half the faces of video that are so familiar to your brilliant PC. The Mac vs. PC war has raged for decades: the PC has fought a brilliant battle, the Mac has all but forfeit, only stubborn stragglers refuse to bow to the glory that is the PC. My tattered heart has found no solace in the arms of the apple, and the PC has only laughed at me from above, staring down at my pathetic grave from it's golden Windows. Oh Apple, how you have betrayed me! All the promises you spoke of, love and satisfaction - broken! Would you, Windows Media Player forgive me my ties to the Macintosh Army? How I desire so to learn more about providing a fresh new look to my home with a barrier fit for a stealth bomber. The days are gone, when innocence warmed my heart from the cruel temptations of the world. I must live now, with the guilt of my affair with Macintosh forever on my shoulders. Corusa, you have exposed my lies, and brought to light what I had hidden for so long in darkness. I knew I was meant to stay together with Windows, but Mac's sleek curves and sultry cd ejection drive tempted me, it drove me and my PC apart. She looked like she would quench my thirst with her smooth alloy body, the temptation was too much to bear - I gave in, hoping just this once would satisfy my crooked heart. In contrast to my fantasy, her insides were bitter and left me hopeless. What had I done!? I couldn't tell PC, how could she ever forgive me? I didn't know what to do, even though Mac is what had caused me so much pain, the only thing that could stop the pain was one last visit with her, my Apple, my apple in the garden. One last visit, turned into another, and another. I couldn't take it anymore. I had to confess to Windows, I'd hoped, that maybe she would find it in her perfect heart to forgive me. My beloved PC would not, and will not forgive me, and I could never go back to Mac as every passionate visit to her heaps on my heart more and more guilt. So you see, I am stuck, I can not be with PC, for she will not forgive me, and I can not be with Mac, as to continue in this sin is unbearable. What am I to do? I suppose I'll have to join up with the Unix.

I'm tired, and I think I need to see a therapist.

Well, at least now you know. And you have it under your belt. One thing i've learned. It's better to take the time to accurately estimate for the client and yourself. If they bach at it then so what.

They have NO IDEA at the work it takes. And NO IDEA how individual we all are, our talents, experience and workflow. At least you know now, charge 50k for your next project.

haha. I wish. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

the logo in the beginning seems to be up on screen for too long. I like the music, it was good.....but not entirely sure if it really fits the commercial its self.
