Just rented the dvx100?????

Hi, I am new to this forum. I have shot news for 15 years at the network and local level. I have volunteered my services to a non-profit charity organization to make a video to encourage more donations. I have a Anton Bauer Stasis with a Panasonic power tap so I thought the DVX-100a would be a great camera to rent for this event. I have shot other events on 1/2 inch and 2/3 inch gear but the rental costs are so high I thought that I would check out this famous camera, especially since I already had a Stasis set-up with the UL2 and trimpacks.

I don't know jack about these prosumer cameras, I will be fighting against the ignorance of how to over=ride the auto mechanisms. I hope that who-ever rented this cameras before me did not jack with it in some wierd artistic way, like the cinema gamma gone bad.
I am shooting a group of underprivledgeg kids getting a visit from Santa at school. It is celebration for an after school food program. I will not set any lighting and I am going to put a Sony wireless on Santa to capture the special moments with the children. I will have a stasis shouder mount, Sony UWP wireless with a ecm-77b, Sachtler DV-6 pod package.

My questions are what do I need to do to best prepare myself. How do I reset the gamma settings? I will be using a AT4073a shotgun too, do I need to pad this mic down?

I am an old news dog used to manual everything, how can I fit into this camera best. I would be willing to use auto Iris but not auto focus.

help, I am just trying to get the kids more $$$ next year.

Thanks and I don't have the time to dig into pasts threads too much as I am running a business for profit when I can. I shoot at noon Thursday so I need help before then. Thanks

Have you got the camera in hand yet? There is manual focus, manual iris, manual zoom, manual this, manual that on the camera. If you can handle the bigger cameras this should be no problem. Try to practice a little bit before you go out to shoot. You can change the gamma setting to whatever you want in the menu. If you want that gamma setting to stay like that than you have to save that scene file that you are working from or else it will go back to whatever it was when you turn your camera off.

Cool, thanks hector, I am trying to feed my own kids dinner now so I will not get to operate the camera until tonight after about 3 hours. More info the better I will be at mastering this camera. I need to set it to something other than 24p too, interlaced or 30p would be the best. I will try to figure that out too. Thanks for your patience but I need all the help I can get before the shoot. I have two kids 2 and six years old so I will not get to vet the camera before 9pm. In fact I have to hide it from the little rascals, they have been known to hand me raw rubber parts from my other cameras.

Something odd about this thread.....

Your funny Pookie, I clicked on your link and it was a pic of a half naked hot chick in a bikini and a picture of a pierced midget. And you call me odd?

Do yo have anything to contribute or just social commentary? Gotta go and feed my 2 year old.

Cheers

Jerry Mohn

basically, just turn the lil A off, (auto) and it will let u do everything manual, pretty easy, if u rent it make sure u ask 4 the manual or even better Barry's book/dvd
try changing the scene files, lil dial with mumbers on back, and compare the values, white balancing is the AWB button in front.
beware: after messing with this camera YOU WILL HAVE TO OWN ONE!!!!!!!!

Finished shooting, looks good

Finished shooting, looks good

I like the camera, it looks good and sounds good. I was very pleased with all the controls but the iris was difficult to work with. I would advise a 10db pad on the AT4073a.

What can I say, it is DV. I wish Panny would make a DVCpro50 version. No matter how hard I try, the color still looks fake in DV. I was pleased at the low noise level in the reds, lots of reds today because of Santa.

I like using the Stasis, I shot for 2 hours and barely put a dent in the Trimpac. It must be tough trying to keep this camera steady without one. I seldom zoomed in because of the obvious limitations of the glass but I was pleased with the one move I made from a tight shot at the end of the glass to a wide shot, I was surprised how well it worked. I was impressed with how close I could get and still hold focus.

Overall, the camera is good but the Iris controll could be helped along, auto Iris was no help, it stuttered too much to have it caught on tape. I just wish we could get the 4:2:2 color space out of this one.

I was hoping that the HVX200 would be a good solution but now I am hearing rumors of the dvx100b looking better in SD. I could not buy this camera until it comes in DVCPRO50 in some form.
