Just purchased LA-7200G Anamorphic Adapter - Help!

Hi

After having and loving my DVX100A for some time I decided to treat it to a Anamorphic adapter LA-7200G.

Now I'm a bit lost and don't want to damage anything in my ignorance so..

(Q1) First things first - (sorry) - I undo the thumb screw on the square sun shield on the front of the DVX and I remove that and replace it with the Lens, screwed down and then finally secured with the thumb screw on the lens. Correct?

So basically the DVX now has two lenses? The original and the 7200?

(Q2) I turn on the dvx and the image on the lcd (int. and ext.) is a distorted (barrel) full screen image. I was expecting some anamorphic screen image for some reason?

(Q3) I have Barry Green's DVX book (excellent BTW) and only after receiving the lens do I look at that section of the book (as you do) - it says I will have trouble focusing etc. But it seems to focus fine as per the image on the LCD (other than the distortion as mentioned in Q2). Also the AUTO focus seems to be working and reports are that it shouldn't?? (why am I complaining?).

(Q4) Do I have to set any menu options to record 16:9?? Or to see a correct image in the viewfinder??

I'll have loads more questions I'm sure but at least the above will get be going and stop me being a nervous wreck!

Thanks

Kevin

Hi Kevin

I'll try and answer as best I can for you.

Q1. Yep. basically two lenses (loads of glass there now. I prefer to think of the ana as an attachment as opposed to a lense though.

Q2. If you are zoomed out all the way you will see barrel distortion with the ana adaptor in place. This tends to go away at around the Z10 mark. As far as LCD display goes, with the ana on you will see a image that is similar to that when your DVX is in squeeze mode. Things just looked a bit vertically stretched although you will notice that you have a wider picture than when in squeeze mode. Doesn't affect framing or the likes though.

The B model now has a widescreen option for the LCD but not the A.

Q3. Like you, I was quite surprised to find that focus was not as much of an issue as expected. Only when you reach about Z90 does it start to cause problems and that will depend on how much light is available to the cam. As a rule I tend not to zoom further than Z90 as the picture can look as if it's in focus but isn't. Best to have a play around with this to get an idea. Auto focus will work to an extent but as I never use auto I cant really comment that much.

Q4. Just make sure that you DVX is set to 4:3 in the menu (or NORM as it appears in the menu). Dont use squeeze or letterbox. No way to cange the aspect shown in the viewfinder via the cam set up. Again, this is only available with the B model.

Hope this helps. Do give yourself some practice as the ana adaptor can very a great tool with a little thought before shooting.

Regards

Jon

Have you tried removing the adapter yet? That's when the fun begins.

It's counter-intuitive... so remain calm and don't break anything. If you do it wront the adapter will stay attached and just spin round and round.

Maybe it's just me, but the first few times I took that things off I spent about ten minutes doing it. Eventually I got it down and can usually do it in a few seconds.
