FS7: Just pulled the trigger on the FS7K

Hello,

As the header implies. I have a question: are there any LUT packages specifically for the FS7 to be downloaded somewhere for use with Catalyst, Vegas Pro and Resolve - or do I need to rely on general Sony Slog ones? In Vegas, there are 3D Luts defined for F5/F55, but not for FS7. In Resolve, it's just the "Sony" category. Do I really need something Sony FS7-specific for best results?

Thanks

Piotr

Morning,

Think of the FS7 as a rehoused F5 with less big production features.

LUTs designed for SLog2/3 to REC709 will be fine, there are some differences between the size of the F55's gamut compared to the F5 and FS7 but not that much to sweat about.

Buy LUTCalc, the cheapest and biggest upgrade you'll buy for your FS7 and you can burn a virtually unlimited number of LUTs tailor made for your FS7.

Enjoy your FS7. Also there's a lot of LUT discussion buried in the forum.

If you are shooting EI then the LUT in the camera only does two things..

-Helps you light and expose
-Stops the director freaking out when he sees 'grey wash'

That lut is not burned on the file.

IMO the onboad luts are fine to acheive these basic missions.

Only when you move to post might you need to consider a broader lut package.

Should you choose to 'burn your LUT' there are many other people doing this.. just not me.

I don't see any point to doing it internally. I'm going to grade every shot anyway, might as well start with an SLog file and do it at once. However, our package includes a SmallHD monitor that takes a LUT and applies it in the preview; meaning you can see true color in the field through the monitor. Then you still have the freedom to modify as needed in post.

To answer the question, no, you don't need something FS7 specific. SLog3 is SLog3, and is available on most systems (although I don't use any of the ones you mentioned on this computer, so I can't double check that). I'm sure it's true for any other style, but that one pretty much covers everything you need.

Thanks guys; one of the most vivid and color-popping resulting picture (even before any grading) I got with a LUT file I found on Convergent Design pages: https://convergent-design.com/download-luts.html
(like this one: SONY_EE_Slog3C_R709.cube).

And Dennis - on the page you linked me to (interesting as a whole), do you mean the archive RosolveCubeFiles.zip? Thanks,

Piotr

PS. But frankly - being a Vegas Pro guy (yeah, yeah, I know) - I find the the Catalyst Suite (even the free Browse) to offer super-simple and consistent (thanks to metadata recognition) LUT transform to 709...

I just removed the excess ; sign in the link in the quote, as it gave me a 404 error when clicking it.

Download that ZIP file and unzip it. There are FOUR Sony LUTs in there. It's also worth reading that PDF just about the download, it will explain the difference between them.

Some good primers on LUTs in general here in DVX:

Thanks Dennis; indeed a rubix cube ;-)

On quite another note: do you guys FS7 owners still use the Sony QXD G-series cards, or the new M-series ones? My Sony dealer I bought my FS7 from sent me this link:
http://www.sony.net/Products/memorycard/en_us/xqd/

- would it mean that the G-series rated at 400 MBps happens to be too slow for the 600 mbps shooting modes, or is the new card only about fater reading/offloading? Or is the M-series simply replacing some older, discontinued QXD series?

The speed only helps in offloading (and only if right usb3 controller). I personally use the older sony S cards which work in all shooting modes over the last 16months.

You mixed Bytes with bits.

Sony only guarantees the G series for every shooting mode all of the time. The price of the newer M series is attractive until you get a failure in a critical situation. I am happy to pay for the peace of mind.

The S cards which are discontinued were qualified to work in all FS7 shooting modes. When the FS7 launched I remember it in an official Sony chart with the N cards only qualified for HD recording options.

Because 400 MBps=3200 Mbps. Plenty enough for 600 Mbps.

But I'm getting my FS7 tomorrow, so perhaps I cannot think reasonably :)
