just picked up a GF1 to use a B camera, suddenly the thought of capturing things twice has expanded my ideas

i've hacked my GH1 a fair number of times and pretty confident with it.

i've loaded the 122.bin into Ptool to have a look and the only difference seems to be the manual movie tick box (i plan on using lpowel's 40Mbps High Reliability AVCHD & 35Mbps in camera MJPEG)

i've read about after the hack the GF1 has to be set up for manual video in cam each time its switched on, and when switched off it loses it?

anyone fancy doing a quick 1 to 5 step guide explaination of the process?

If you've hacked a GH1 before with PTool you know what to do. GF1's the same routine, only difference is you feed PTool GF1 firmware version 1.22, and you use settings specific to GF1.

Once you've launched PTool and fed it GF1 ver. 122, download LPowell's settings patch which combines 40Mbps AVCHD and 35Mpbs MJPEG, open the setj.ini file in a text editor, and enter those settings into PTool. Or just copy the setj.ini file to your PTool folder in Windows and those settings will show up as a green "J" button at the bottom of PTool when you launch it. Click it and the patch settings will all be applied.

Save the modified firmware as GF1__123.bin (two underscores after GF1), copy it to the root of an SDHC card, load the card into your GF1 with a freshly charged battery, turn the camera on, press the Playback button, choose upgrade. Good luck.

yeah i'm ok with all that part shaveblog i was just a bit confused by a few threads i read but they may have been from early patches using old Ptool versions.

il attempt to hack just how i hack my GH1, if the hack goes on ok il figure out how it behaves easy.

its a **9 serial i hope it takes the hack  cheers

Sorry, due that i've German language setted in my GF1, here's only a rough explanation:
1. Go to Film P mode (that Movie Camera with P next to it on the Mode Wheel)
2. Go into menu and set exposure mode to "M"
3. Go to "Custom Mode->Save->Select Slot" (don't know the right translation, sorry) and save
4. turn the mode wheel to the associated custom slot you've saved it to in step 3.)

Don't know if that also works with normal photo modes, e.g. if you select "M" as preset for the custom slot. Just try it ;)

flashbeast thanks for the help.

this is what i was confused about, i think i will be able to figure it out when i actually hack it, if not i will be back tomorrow

LPowell described a way to enable manual movie mode automatically every time you turn the camera on. You set the camera to Creative Movie mode, set all the menu settings the way you want them, choose M under Video/Exposure Mode, then save this custom shooting mode as C1, or C2 if you already have a custom mode saved. Then whenever you want to shoot this way, just dial it in with the mode dial. Great tip and saves a lot of time.

ahh shaveblog that sounds more like it! its not like that lpowell guy to come up with anything useful! hahaaa! typical!

dont suppose you remember the name of the thread where he describes it? looking for anything with the search function is like trying to find a needle in the universe.

For the GF1, I recommend my Fast Action 3-Frame GOP Patch, which is optimized for AVCHD-Lite's 720p 25/30 fps modes. Both it and the Reliable In-Camera Playback Patch have all the necessary GF1 settings built-in, and you can apply either patch with the I or J button just as you did with the GH1.

To activate the Manual Movie Mode on a patched GF1, you need to first turn the selector knob to Creative Movie Mode. Then go into the Motion Picture menu and select M from the PASM manual movie mode option. As you mentioned, your M selection will not persist after you turn the camera off. To avoid this glitch, simply save your settings to one of the Custom mode slots, and it will be restored every time you select it. I find the Custom settings are likewise the most convenient way to quickly switch between NTSC and PAL modes.

lpowell = the man! (i don't like ass kissers but you do deserve props)

thanks for all the help guys, you've cleared up all confusing worries i had... GF1 hack here i come! (2mro)

i'm going to re-read the Fast Action 3-Frame GOP Patch id skipped it on the GH1 in favour of the 50 frames, time to check it out i think

GF1 arrived safely, all in order in good condition, shipped with a fully charged battery so on with the hack!

as advised i went for the lpowell Fast Action 3-Frame GOP Patch the I button within Ptool.

patch applied with no issues, set mode to creative movie mode selected M as exposure mode within the menu and made any other changes i wanted, selected cust. set menu and saved as C1

turned the dial to C1 and now i have a well patched manual video recording GF1 that doesn't reset when i power off, many thanks to the people who lent words of wisdom, really appreciated!

i have to say that the GF1 blew me away when i was looking for vertical banding issues at high iso's, lots of noise way up at 1600 but no banding  way better than my GH13

one thing i did notice when playing with the shutter speed set to 2, below 50 seems to all be the same... i had manual focus set as normal yet when i showed the shutter down to 2 no visible change took place, 50 & above was normal but below 50 nothing changed, is this the norm on a patched GF1?

Will you please be quiet about the GF1? The collective wisdom here says it's a Flip-grade toy compared to the GH-series, and those of us who know otherwise would like to keep it that way. Helps keeps the heat off, and used GF1 body prices low.

indeed! :D

in my experience the shutter speed doesn't go below 1/30 on the gf1 hacked or not :(

with auto focus on you can only get down to 1/30, when you switch to manual focus you should be able to take it down to 1/2, as with the SH mode on the GH13, i can get the numbers to go down to 1/2 yet visible difference in shutter speed stops at 1/50... strange.

apologies for ringing the bell  il keep quiet ;o)

I apologise if this is not the right place to ask this question but here goes

I have tried many hacks and some work and some don't with my system It's all a lot of fun I have tries lpowel's stuff and it works well but is 720 p.. My Jpegs on this setting are very similar in quality to my AVCHD clips which were set to the 'C" settings In all my trials I have saved a patch which works GREAT with 1080 p mjpeg and has tranfer rates around 70 mb/sec and the camera seems stable . I suspect I can up the settings on the AVCHD Maybe my jmpegs are so good they show up the AVCHD a little or these AVCHD setting may only be "b" settings My problem is I did not document the settings I used--I can't even remember where I got them---so I can't change AVCHD without altering my Jmpeg settings.. I would like to find out what they were so I can share the experience and check if my AVCHD settings were "c" Is there a way to retrieve the settings?
Thank you Allan

Glad I found this thread and so I push it up if that's OK.

I'm trying to get a decent video / stills camera that has to be first of all COMPACT. I had a GH13 but that was a little too large for me. So I tried and still try a Lumix LX5 but this cool little cam is a bit reduced in its (video) options. So I recognized the GF1 and GF2. Cool and compact.

Now my question: which of them would you recommend when it comes to video? The handling of the GF1 seems to me a bit more "comfortable" due to its wheel on the top of the cam. But how do the both of them compare regarding "handling"?

For my needs 720p recordings should be satisfying ... I guess. Does the hacked GF1 support 720p50? Or even 1080p50?

The GF2 is a bit more "compact" AFAI could see which is nice.

edit:
Did I get it right that for a GF1 a "quasi manual mode" can be acheived using the custom program buttons (top wheel)? And the GF2 can NOT do so?

Hacked GF1 has full manual control for exposure for video, it just returns back to auto constantly. Unless you create and save custom settings as mentioned in this thread. I have read that GF2 lacks some manual control for exposure for video, but have no first hand info. I have GF1 and it has decent video. Combined with Hexanon 40 mm pancake lens it would be a rather compact HD camera. Not as compact as LX3 or LX5, but a bit like it.

I use GF1 as a second camera unit. It has less fixed pattern noise (FPN) than GH1, but sadly the video just falls a bit short in sharpness.

Yes, that's what I found ass well. So it seems that manual control can be quite convenient on the GF1. Regarding the GF2 hack people are awaiting curiously the ability for manual control. Vitaly states that it would be coming ... soon. Or maybe better: "when it's done".

The GF2 seems to have a better audio due to its stereo mic. But I ask myself what the GF2's workflow is like when it comes to manual control ... I mean if control can only be achieved via touchscreen?!? But maybe I'm wrong on that.
