Just made my first short...

in the midst of doing a semi-serious documentary of the circus performers i knocked out a quick short over two days of filming.

its a little weird, it was totally unscripted and i basically gave a lot of famous circus performers who were being interviewed for the real documentary a simple premise and told them to ad-lib the rest. it took a weird direction.

please give me some honest feedback on the general short, the viability of it's interest to the general public at film festivals etc.

and of course it was shot with a dvx-100a!

Hi Matt,

The reason knowone replied to your post is because it's somthing they arn't used to seeing. Most users are expecting somthing shorter perhaps or fast. But I thought I would reply, because knowone replies to my posts and I know how it feels.

I think you did a great job. I'm asuming this was all 24p? How long did it take you to do the shoot and have you always been into circus stuff?

Re: Just made my first short...

ok I have just finished watching your doc and have to say that it was pretty funny here and there. Might need some tighter edit and perhaps rearrange the testimonies to clear out the story line but besides that I found it interesting.
As far as the picture goes, I like the producer's background and the way you had him set up and the trumpet guy as well. looked nice to me.

besides I have no clue why ppl would not post just because they might not like the topic. who cares I thought that the forum is here to criticize and help to improve the work.

Btw r u part of that circus,
I found it interesting that many of those people who work there did not even know each other too much, so it makes me wonder how big the circus is??

my two cents.

Re: Just made my first short...

thanks for the comments...

i'm not sure what shorter or fast means?

is this referring to my short? my post? was the download time too long?

i'm not in the circus.

a friend i've known since we were like 12 is in the circus and i have visited him at many shows all over the country and even spent a month with him in the bahamas at a show...

one thing nobody understands about circus' is that it isn't any one circus.

people sign up for either a specific tour of 3 or 4 months, or sometimes they just do a weekend here and there.

sometimes they might run into tons of people they know, other times they know nobody there but they all start talking about who they know and they all run in the same circles.

most of the people in the circus or 4th or 5th generation.

i have a tighter edit of the short where i cut out 6+ minutes last night and i'll be updating the version on the site later today.

Re: Just made my first short...

It wasn't as "short" as I expected, but I liked it. ;D

Some more B roll footage would make it a little more interesting (eg, the monkey, the clowns, popcorn popping, elephants pooping). Also, some medium close-ups and close-ups would be nice, but I understand you were working with one camera.

I think there's a moral in the Fastest Clown story -- the shorter this is, the funnier it will be.

And personally, I don't think Mark was funny.
