Just got my first DVX

Well, I just picked up a (very) used DVX100A off craiglist today. This thing is a beater.

500 hours, and it was dropped causing a fair bit of damage. The filter threads/lens hood assembly broke off, causing the focus ring to fall out too. Top handle was broken off and reattached. The top mic fell off too, but interestingly still works fine. LCD doesn't work at all. Other than that , she's great;)

Used A's seem to go for $1,000 to $1,200 around here, so I offered $200 for it and he took it. Not sure if I overpaid, but it still records and came with three batteries, a UV filter and a replacement handle. I figure a parts camera would probably cost $200 so any use I get out of it is a bonus.

I taped the mic on until I can figure out a better method to reattach it. Glued the filter ring back on with the best epoxy I had around, manual focus works although the ring feels a little loose - not sure if this is normal or not. The handle seems secure enough so I'll leave it for now. We'll see how long it holds together, but I am excited to try it out.

well cheers then!! Welcome to dvx ownership!! Hey, every dvx needs a home, you just bandage that bad-boy up and hit the red button!!!

Happy shooting!!!

Yes, I echo The Wretched. Plz post some pics up of it. I think you got a great deal though. Its records, the mic works...you gonna use a monitor probably anyway during shoots.

Well, the mic no longer works. In fact, none of the handle controls work anymore. That, however, is my fault. When I bought the dvx, the guy threw in a new replacement handle with it. The old handle was pretty rickety, so I figured I'd take the chance and replace it, sans manual.

It was finnicky, but nothing too difficult. Took me about 3-4 hours all told to pull off the old handle, remove all the boards and swithces, reinstall them and remount the handle. However, with the handle unscrewed from the body, it was still attached via the ribbon cable going back in. I must have damaged that or pulled it loose from all the twisting and repositioning of the handle as once it was back together, nothing on the handle works.

It's disappointing, but I'm willing to live with the loss of those in exchange for a solid handle. I don't worry when picking it up now. If I get brave, I might pop into the main body and see if it just was pulled loose. I didn't see any visible damage to the cable, but the are pretty thin so I might have missed it.

DO NOT open up the body. You finally have your camera , don't mess with it.

Oh come on, that's no fun. :)

Plenty of light, proper tools, move slowly, have bins ready for all those tiny screws, and it's not too tricky if you're comfortable with small electronics. And the service manual is a big help too: http://www.hostingphpbb.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=56&mforum=andromeda

You can find all your part numbers in there also to order replacements. I haven't messed with the lens assembly so far, that scares me a bit.

I think there's a good chance you just need to go back in and double check your ribbon cable connections. I seem to miss reconnecting something every time I go in there.
