My camera seems like it can't recognize the firestore drive. I've read through the manual and the only thing that I can I'm missing is where the hvx200 needs to be set in an External control or tapeless trigger function must be enabled.

does anyone know where this can be found? I've searched through every menu option I've got and don't see it!

thanks in advance.

Do you have the FS100, if not that might be your problem and if you do have the FS100, where did you buy it. Because it doesn't seem available anywhere. BTW I saw something in the manual about clearing the thumbnails with the Audio/Dub thumbnail button on pg 66.

External Control Menu Option

External Control Menu Option

[Menu] --> [9. Other Functions] --> [1394 Control] --> [EXT] Then on your FS-100 you will need to return to the home screen and press the record button twice. the first time puts it into a ready record state and the second starts the actual record. You should see the timecode on the home screen begin to count. It took me a little bit to figure this out. The FS-100 manual is not all that clear on this.

thanks tpouyer, but still getting nothing? any other suggestions?

BTW, I bought my fs100 from Roscor in chicago.

Thanks for the info. Just spitballing, but there is a button on the back of the HVX200, next to the battery, that you might want to change to Video dub (firewire). Hope that helps. Good luck.

HVX Firestore Recording

HVX Firestore Recording

I don't believe that the tapeless mode works with the HVX. I know that sounds weird since it is supposed to have great integration with the camera but I could not figure out how to get the tapeless mode to work. So following the instructions I posted above put your FS-100 into local mode, then hit the record button twice. The LCD display in your HVX should say in the top left hand corner '1394' with a red dot next to it. If you see '1394--' that means that your FS-100 is in a mode that the HVX does not know how to communicate with. If you see '1394' with a red pause next to it then just press the record button on your FS-100 again. Just to make this very clear you start and stop the recording from your FS-100 and NOT from your hvx.

You also might want to make sure you're recording in a format that the firestore supports. i.e. don't use the native recording mode of the HVX. I have only tested this with 1080p24 with advanced pulldown but it worked fine. And if you get this far, when you attempt to mount the disk to your computer you will need to put the firestore in HDD mode in order for it to connect. The manual pages for connecting the firestore to a computer ( macintosh ) left this part out.

Great post. It is a little rough getting started. I have the .mxf clips copied over to my G5, but Final Cut won't import them as P2 as just .mxf files. The folder structure on the FS-100 does not look like the P2, but it does have the LASTCLIP.TXT file. I tried importing directly from the FS-100 and it also gave me problems. I'm using FCP 5.1. What am I missing here?

FS-100 Organize P2

FS-100 Organize P2

Before connecting the FS-100 to a computer you will need to run the utility on it called 'Organize P2'. Then once you connect your FS-100 to your computer and startup FCP then go to file --> import --> panasonic p2 and it should recognize your FS-100 and all the clips on it just like it would if it were a p2 card.

Yup. tpouyer has the answers. Thanks.

I confirmed that on the HVX>Other Settings>1394 Control>Ext that you don't control recording by using the HVX record button, but rather the FS-100 record button. Pressing the HVX record button does display a red dot by the 1394__ readout on the HVX display momentarily. The FS-100 manual indicates/implies the remote control should work. Perhaps fixing that is part of the announced firmware upgrade schedule for this summer.

One more thing: I noticed that the clips get clipped at 2GB (the FAT file size limit) so that I have to reassemble them in FCP. Is there an automated way to put them back together?

I still haven't had any luck and customer service can't seem to help me out either, but the last post brings me to another question. Why do I have to change my recording setting on the HVX, to be able to change my 1394 control. If my camera is in 720P mode, the 1394 is blued out, but when I switch it to 480, I can then gain control. It just seems like a hassle to go through those extra steps.

The 1394 control won't work with Native formats but will work in 720/24p. Actually, I think the proper thing to say is that the Firestore and the Camera will only talk to each other when the camera is outputting a format the Firestore is happy with. I had the same issue but never have to go to 480 to change it.

Man, you guys made me all most loose my integrity there for a moment. Check page 78 and 79 of the FS-100 User Guide. The Control Screen has to be set to Tapeless Control as well. That way the HVX's record button will start and stop the drive.

Hope that helps. Doesn't anybody read anymore? Not that the ease of use of a guide that makes you go 80% of the way through before you can get things working right makes much of a difference. Hey Focus, ever heard of USABILITY?

It took me way to long to also figure out how to play back the clips from the Firestore to the HVX's LCD screen. CRAP POOP DIRTY FILTH FOUL FILTH FILTH!!! Wait. Breathe deeply. Don't loose the integrity. Anger management... All I had to do was switch the Control back to Local and then I could view them on the camera. I did read on Panasonic's site that the Thumbnails will not show up from the FS-100 as of now. That however is supposed to be fixed in an upcoming firmware. Hope the 24pn is fixed as well!

I'm out.

Mark.
