Just got HMC-40 Now need help converting

I work on a mac and edit mainly with Avid Media Composer and sometimes with Final Cut Pro. I need to download or buy some kind of converter so I can convert the files from the card and edit the HD video in Avid. What programs do you guys recommend? Thanks.

Do you have an Intel MAC? If so, you can use bootcamp and the freebee transcoder from Panasonic. FCP will handle the files with no problem if you have one of the later versions.

Let me know if this works and if not I can do a little digging around.

FYI, on a Mac with FCP you can do a Log and Transfer. Then point the program at your memory card. Now here is the kicker, if you have PERIAN installed FCP (at least my latest version of FCP 6) will crash every time you add some footage to the queue!! So go to your preference pane an uninstall Perian and then you'll be golden. I just found this out ..... luckily I found an article about this problem before I wasted a day or so reinstalling FCP :)

MPEG Streamclip is very nice but it doesn't support the *.mts or *.m2ts files from the HMC40

I use Toast to transcode to the format I want (photo jpeg) and there's Avid's DNxHD which could fit your needs very well, lately I'm also testing Video Pier to transcode..

As you know both Toast and VoltaicHD shift (delay) the video by 4 --> 11 frames depending on the resolution & frame rate. I'd be interested in hearing if Video Pier does that too OR if it converts without any problem.

Assume you shoot a video with very clear audio and video sync points, like someone doing a single clap, wait a few seconds and doing it again several times. A 720/30p video is the worst offender with Toast (11 frame video delay/shift), so I would suggest that mode as a test; take the same clip and convert it to Quicktime with Video Pier.

Next watch the converted clip in the Quicktime player to see it any shift occurred.

Alright, here's the first of various tests but I'll post just one to not spam, you can find all the 6 clips right here: http://vimeo.com/album/226679

Both of the 30p clips are kinda weird I don't know why but I'll take a look on that later..

WOW, Video Pier appears to be bang on for all the modes, EXCEPT 720/30p. The audio was WAY off for the 720/30p mode.

Toast on the other hand, showed a clear audio delay, with 720/30p being the worst.

This is a really good test, so I've added the link to this thread in the main index sticky.

Yeah, that's what i was talking about with the 30p clips, looks like they're in a 60p/i container or something, i never use 30p and obviously i don't know what's the trick but I'm sure I'll find out.. hehehe..

Thanks for the link, there's another trick I'm not aware of, how to embed the video, sorry for that.
