hi guys, i just bought me the dvx b but i know nothing about cinematography. first i would like to know whats the easiest way to getting to my camera. (2), can someone explain to me what shutter speed is and what is it's function?. i also need to know about shooting in progressive mode i've had a lot about this. i've had about the dvx b book and dvd are they worth it.

The real gurus will chim in I'm sure and give you the real low down. But shutter speed on dv cams is effectively the amount of time that the CCD's are exposed to the light. This has two obvious effects.

1) How bright the image is
2) How much blur you get


Make the shutter speed bigger (So it's open for shorter time; 50fps instead of 25fps) and you allow half as much light to fall on the CCD, so the image will be darker. you can compensate for the light loss but opening the iris wider by 1 stop.

If the shutter is really fast, then you get 'instantaneous' light and so lose motion blur. Movies occasionally do it in action scenes to make the images strobe more.
 
Well, I haven't fiddled with it much in my shooting. But say you find yourself in a situation where you can't control the light and it's too bright or too dark and you need "the shot" then you can sacrifice a little blur or strobing to get more/less light onto the CCD's.


Also, you might want the effect. I think Underworld and Saving Private Ryan both used a fast shutter style of effect. The images strobe a bit but feel raw and gritty, almost llike you're catching glimpses of action as it happens.

Do some tests is probably the best way to understand it.

I just got mine a month ago. It owns! So many adjustments to learn, and a lot of it is hands on. Mess around with it. Film some nature. But do get Barry Green's book and DVD. When I got the book I said... thats it?? (small book) Then I got to reading it. So much information in there!! Very helpful in understanding which button does what. And everyone here is helpful with questions , like AZa.
 
I also recently got the camera and it is great. Still learning. But I switched to a faster shutter speed to capture footage of people fencing half way through or so and I noticed that the blades (which move damn fast) are more easily seen.
