Just got an HVX200, questions

I have questions about capturing and importing.

I went out to shoot and noticed that many times, selections were blue, so I couldn't change them. I tried different scene files and settings, but some of them never changed. I couldn't change to DVCPROHD, I couldn't turn letterbox off, it would give me a selection for FPS depending on the settings, but I'd still be in, say, 720p30 rather than 720p24, why should it give me that selection if I'm choosing the frame rate anyway?

As far as importing, I captured some stuff onto P2 and I'd like to empty the card onto my harddrive so I can shoot more. I don't know how, and it seems very basic, but... I'm using FCP and FCE.

Sorry for the newbie questions, but... well, I'm new, and the manual didn't help much. I also couldn't find how to delete clips shot onto P2 on the camera itself without connecting to software. That seems very useful on set when deleting not usable takes to make room on the card.

Blue means other setting make that setting not apply. For instance, when in an HD format it records to DVC PRO HD. The record to dv, dvcpro25 or dvcpro 50 is only relevant when shooting in an SD mode. If you switht he record mode to 480i that menu will become accessible. If you want 24 fps use the 720 24p setting. changing frame rate is a separate issue and will not change recording format. I strongly recommend getting Barry's book because it explains all of this in much more detail. His book lets you unlock the potential of this camera.

Yes, I know that it means they can't be changed with the given settings. I'm just trying to figure out why that would be the case at some points, such as widescreen.

I'm pretty sure hd can only be shot in widescreen on the 200. Correct me if I'm wrong someone. I thought the cam was designed to only have that option in SD. All the blue menus descriptions and what needs to be selected to make them not blue is in "The HVX Book".

It's vital that you crack open the manual and start reading. And if you can- get a copy of Barry Green's HVX book. The HVX shoots HD in 16:9 because that is what HD is. You can shoot Standard Def in both 4:3 and 16:9 on the HVX. Again, that's all covered in the books I mentioned. If you don't have a manual for your camera you can download it from Panasonic.

Only shoots in widescreen in HD? That's ridiculous.

It shoots widescreen SD, too.

Or, if you're saying it's ridiculous that it shoots only in widescreen in HD, it's because there is only one HD aspect ratio: 16:9. No camera shoots HD in anything else.

a problem youre going to run into with this thread is that the questions youre asking are either:
too broad
too fundamental for a simple answer
have already been covered ad nauseum.

the search feature of the site is pretty helpful. search things like "transferring P2 to mac" or "hvx200 menu settings"

and like everyone else says, i say get a copy of barrys book. it does cover everything in the manual but from a real-world perspective. rather than just going linearly through all the features.

i did a quick google search for "hvx200 menu detail" and came up with a few helpful guides. this one looked pretty informative at first glance:
people.ucsc.edu/~ilusztig/172/handouts/hvxguide.pdf

and somebody help me here. there used to be a web page that had very detailed explanations of all the hvx200 menu features. it was really long and had blue and white text on a black page. i cant find it anymore - anyone remember that?
