Just got a new camera - Sony F35

Cool! Thanks for the clarification Keith! Just making sure I wasn't doing it wrong! Just finished drilling and tapping the pieces. That aluminum cuts like butter ;)

Hi all,
Let’s discuss correct white balancing of the F35.
Previous user of my camera told me that F35 have the native white balance mode (tungsten preset in cine-ei mode) and he used the 85B (orange) conversion filter to balance the camera in daylight and to achieve this "color sweet spot”. I still don’t have the filters and the compendium, but my opinion F35’s native WB is the daylight preset because it produces much less noise even in tungsten conditions. I detect the noise on my odyssey recorder in focus peaking mode.
Does Sony F35 really have a native white balance preset?

So I bought a remote trigger for the Odyssey, but didn't notice until after receiving it that it works on Odyssey firmware version 5.10.100 only! Is this true? Also I checked for that version of the firmware online and can't find it in the archive...
Does anyone know where else I can get this firmware update? Or does anyone have it saved on their computer, that could upload it to Dropbox or somewhere?

I think it only started working on that firmware. Previous firmware releases did not support remote triggering, but all subsquent firmwares do. Remote Trigger is not enabled in all modes, but you'll know if it is simply by switching to a mode and then checking the Trigger menu.

Ok gotcha! Also worth noting, the trigger is not auto sensing and has to be enabled in the menu; also the trigger needs to be held down for a couple seconds to start and stop recording; This takes some getting used to!

Ok, this is driving me mad: I usually don't export from Premiere since I grade in Resolve, but at the moment I'm doing some noise reduction with Neat Video. The problem is that Premiere introduces moire into my F35 footage; it's not there in other software, but it's consistently included in the exports from Premiere, no matter the settings.

Has anyone encountered this issue? Any solution?

Is neat video is reading the clip at 32bit? Go into pref and make sure its using your video cards if available. Disable spatial and make sure your custom, per clip noise sample is a good one for 3 full frames. Put it on high quality (slow) and/or adjust effect opacity to 75% or less... then regrain it. Any examples/frames? Sometimes the native f35 noise looks just as good as when I've taken the trouble to remove it just to add back again. I know you're talking about moire but that tends to be a case by case thing and grain/noise can directly affect it.

Thanks for the swift reply!

It actually appears to be an interlacing issue, even though it manifests as moire. I think it's about how Premiere reads the 50i source, even though it should be a simple matter of just interpreting it as 25p. I checked the "remove flickering" option in "field options" and now the issue is gone.

Do you know if this fix has any negative impact on the footage?

Hello, not sure where I should post this, but I wanted to introduce myself as a new owner of an F35 here in Portland, OR. A couple of partners and I have teamed up to start work on our first couple of independent projects, one being a documentary on a folk band that has a unique story and deep roots to the Northwest.

Anyway, I'm kind of spearheading the whole thing and have gone and bought an F35 package from Alan Gordon Enterprises. It was a good deal, they were very communicative with me, and I felt good about buying directly from a rental house where the camera had been regularly serviced and was said to be in prefect working order. I will be fully inspecting it with a technician later this week but had some immediate concerns upon receiving the camera and seeing some inconsistencies with the pics from their add page on their website, as the cam I received did not match their pictures. I've attached photos below and was hoping to get some ideas on these issues, which may not cause any problems anyway. As you can see, the lens control connection on the front panel has been surgically removed. Also, on the back of the camera where the interface box, which has a bit of a rattle in it, docks, there seems to be half of the pins gone on the bottom receptacle. And, on the bottom right of the side panel with the menu display, there seems to be a black rectangular scar. If this helps, the serial number is 11027.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts. And, all the info and your willingness to share it on this thread has been greatly appreciated; it's been educational!

Lastly, I was hoping to get in touch with someone who owns an F35 here in the Portland/Seattle area who might be available for hire as a second camera to help us shoot a small live concert of the aforementioned band. Please pm me if so, and thanks again!

Your dock port is supposed to only have half the pins as far as I know. If it's rattling, first make sure you're properly attaching it with all 4 steps of the lever, then make sure all the bolts are fully tightened. A very very slight rattle is normal.

Hi Nic,

The F35 back port does have all the pins, the top port does not.
Some of those pins might be related to supplying power (but never tested it).
It looks like the LDS lens interface has been removed from the version you pictured.

Couple things for Nic Price -

I wouldn't rule out the possibility that the camera is an F23 conversion, unless anyone else here knows a reason to exclude the possibility.

The shaved off port in the front doesn't matter unless you had electronic PL lenses. I'm guessing the camera didn't have the rest of the feature for it, and the port can get in the way of follow focus units and other rail attachments. You're probably better off without it.

The dock port with the missing pins supplies 12v power out - but only to a recognized VTR unit. It does not supply the power out used by the IF box or the fiber box - those boxes use power pins on the main dock port.

The VTR power out dock port does not activate by default - it will only output power to a VTR, which it determines to be docked when certain conditions are met. I have it all written down somewhere, but suffice to say you're not going to activate it by accident, and it would take considerable intentional effort to get power from that port. Unless you intend on using either an SRW-1 or Codex unit that port is essentially obsolete.

But to further describe how that port was intended to function:
- I believe only half of the VTR power port pins are actually wired to power/ground - the others were never functional, regardless of whether the connector has the pins. Some units may have shipped with all pins, others with half removed. Also possible that it could have changed during a repair.
- Only the back dock offers VTR power. By design, a VTR could be top mounted, but would have to be powered externally.

Thanks for the info Mitch, Alan, Manuel, and James. I see the "Property of" stamp now. There is only a slight rattle in the IF box, and it seems to be working fine. Yes, I see how I will be better off without the electronic lens port anyway. And, from my further investigating, it definitely looks like some units have all the pins and some only half the pins in the VTR power port on the back of the camera. Once again, this forum/thread is quite the resource. I hope to contribute to it in the future.

FYI - my F35 kit up for sale in the marketplace. Getting rid of modified Sigma 18-35 1.8, Odyssey 7Q+, C30W color viewfinder and more.

I bought the f35 that was on ebay without an IF box. Cam is actually in great condition. Does anyone have IF box they want to sell?

Hey man, I looked at that unit too. It is in great shape. Enjoy it. I went for another unit precisely because the IF box is very hard to find. Good luck with your search and share some images when you try the camera. I am sure one will pop up somewhere.
