Just got a new camera - Sony F35

I suggest you offer to pay to have it evaluated by a local camera rental house. It's certainly worth it to do this and not at all uncommon. Frankly it's what I would do buying a used car, so why not do it when buying a used camera?

Good advice thanks Mitch, if I decide on taking the camera I'll do just that.

I got mine from Alan Gordon in LA (best case scenario it was one they had serviced and rented, though I assume it was there on consignment). The upside was the ability to ask questions and they had no issues with me ****ing around with the thing all I wanted (including throwing on lenses that were also there for sale). Did pay a little bit of a premium as a result, but was much more reassuring than an ebay buy.

Definitely see if you can run it by a house that's still renting them or has them in their catalogue, say Clairmont or someone like that. I think you can actually still rent them from panavision if your job calls for it, but not sure if they'd do an inspection for you (even if paid).

Hey all - I'm hoping to get a diagnosis on an issue I'm having with the Odyssey and 50p. It records 29.97 perfectly fine through the SDI A input, but when I switch the camera to 50p, the SDI A input becomes totally glitchy on the monitor and records wacky footage like this. What's also strange is that it says "A Only" even though it's recognizing the 50p, as you can see here. My assumption is that the problem is related to a DIY mount that I attached to L-handle screw holes with screws that were obviously too long (I'm an idiot, I know):

I removed the shell to confirm that I had busted something with the screws:

That little piece is not supposed to be bent at a 45degree angle but I can't get enough access to further evaluate the damage. What is strange is that this piece definitely seems to be connected to the Viewfinder1 port, but the viewfinder still works perfectly fine. It's also strange to me that SDI A still works perfectly fine when it doesn't have to dual link with SDI B.

How would you guys deal with this? Is my only option to send to Sony for a repair or could there be a better solution?

Thanks for any advice,
An Idiot

50P requires dual link sdi. You need to hook up a second sdi to the IF box and plug that into sdi b on the Odyssey. It is not clear if you are doing that aleady.

That's the latest fw update on the odyssey. DPX should work fine.

O wow you're right. What a relief. So 50p prores is no longer an option? Why?
Was it ever an option through single cable SDI? Others have asked you; while you may still recieve a signal it won't be 50p without dual SDI
Also make sure you are connecting A to A and B to B its actually an easy mistake if you don't have your cables marked.

No I never thought that was an option, I've been dual-linking all along (that's why I got the Odyssey). But before the firmware update, I was getting 50p prores no problem.

I did, however, make the mistake of connecting A to B and B to A when I first got the camera, which resulted in offset rows of pixels that looked like bad interlacing. I thought it was a multiplexer issue and it took me a while to figure out that I was just being stupid. But I decided to return the multiplexer anyways and get a 7Q+ to minimize room for error, and I'm glad it happened because the Odyssey is amazing.

So what's up with the new firmware? I have to shoot raw to get 50p?? I suppose I'll revert to the previous firmware then.

We added Dual-HD modes, allowing two separate video signals to come in at once. In Dual-HD Monitoring, you can record one while monitoring both. This is included free in the regular HD ProRes mode. In Dual-HD Recording (included with the Odyssey RAW Bundle) we can record two separate HD video signals simultaneously.

If you send Dual-Link HD-SDI 50p into the Odyssey7Q+, it cannot tell the difference between that signal and two separate HD-SDI feeds. More modern cameras use 3G-SDI, not HD-SDI. But we left this mode available in DPX recording as we do not offer Dual-HD in DPX.

For the record, if you made an F35 ONLY firmware I bet you'd make a lot of people very happy. And by a lot I mean approximately 15-25 people on this forum lol. But we would be VERY happy

No such thing as a stupid question, the only stupid questions are the ones we don't ask.
Thanks for bringing up the question, I was unaware of the change in recording modes myself.

Also thanks to Mitch for explaining, and for his tireless efforts on these forums! He doesn't have to, the Odyssey speaks for itself. That speaks volumes about Mitch and his personal character!

I second that. Thanks Mitch for the rapid response and the amazing product.

Thanks guys.

If we could justify making a special recording mode just for F35 we would, but it would ONLY be for that camera and even if it meant every single F35 owner purchased an Odyssey7Q+ it still wouldn't cover the man hours expense for us. Happy to provide when we can, but we had to make a decision with available functions and the Dual-HD mode won out.

Sorry Mitch could you clarify.

Does this also mean we can no longer record prores 1080 50p via dual link on the Sony F3? We don't have the RGB upgrade and no 3G option.

Sorry Mitch, but to clarify, does this mean that (moving forward) 50p via dual-link, will only be available in .dpx recording mode?

2016.06 in .dpx mode with the F35 is basically perfect, far and away the most stable release to-date. But it sounds like we have to stick to 2016.01 if we want full ProRes functionality (full-range data and 50p), have I got that right?

Correct, although the "full range data" issue has not changed in any way and we deliver the full range. See Nick Shaw's response in the other thread that explains that the issue indicated lies within Resolve, not our recording.
