Just got a new camera - Sony F35

Why do you like the Smallhd 502 over the C30W? I've got the C30W but was planning to sell it and use a BM Video assist for monitor and recorder, but now I'm having trouble recording 50p through an AJA 3GM (the file claims to be 50p but appears interlaced) so I'm thinking about trading in for a 7Q to make things simpler. In that case I'll want a separate monitor and I love the C30W (especially because I haven't managed to access the menu via ethernet), but if the smallHD is better..

Here's a raw 50p clip and a couple slowed down clips if anyone wants to check out my interlacing issues. I'd be grateful for a deinterlacing solution or any thoughts on what's going wrong.

Almost looks like you are missing 1/2 the SDI info, I have made this mistake shooting 50p and only hooking one SDI up to the recorder. The result looks like interlaced and read on the 7Q as 30p.

If you have C30W please keep, it is best option for F35. Have a look back for threads by user Samana, he 3d printed parts to use a different diopter on his C30W and actually made a brilliant handheld setup. I would say the biggest downside of C30W is if it gets in the way of short fat prime lens when mounted to the F35 body.

502 I use almost every day on lots of different cameras so the cost / use vs the C30W was a no brainer for me. C30W is limited to F35. That being said, 502 mounts really nice using the nato rail and stays out of the way because of the design on the evf. It's nice to have a flip out LCD. And the focus is easier with the 502 than even my 7Q mounted on the back.

I have found a simple 15mm rosette plate which is by far the best way to mount a 7Q I have found this far.

Yes you will want to trade your recorder in for a 7Q. You are limiting yourself in what the camera is capable if you use it with any other recorder. Convergent Design has done the work required to handle our funny 12-bit Dual Link PSF signal and no one else is going to do that with a modern recorder. Sure if you want the simple cheap 24fps option get the hyper deck.

Yachacha - thanks for the advice. Decided to keep the C30W and get the 7Q+ as you suggest. I think I was getting messed up 50p because I had SDI A going into input B and vice versa, but now I'm having trouble getting any signal through the multiplexer and I 'd really rather not have to worry about one extra power-eating device anyways. Just wish I could get a third audio channel through the 3.5mm jack. They're adding 8-channel SDI audio capability in the next firmware update but I'd rather be able to run an H6 into the 7Q to compliment the SDI audio (right now it's only one or the other).

Thanks again!

Cool, thanks Alan! I was thinking to get one for flying as well, thanks for confirming the smaller sized one actually fits!

are these alternates to the pre-insallted hyper gammas, or are they intended as alternate s-log options?

I believe they are intended as alternatives to both, with the megagammas being similar to hypergammas. I haven't tested any of them myself. I vaguely remember someone mentioning them a year or two ago, but don't know if the investigation lead to anything.

I've had issues if the side panel wasn't screwed on snug enough and some of the buttons weren't working. Are you getting the fan menu to change or is the menu stuck on max as well? It could be some sort of safety setting because the camera is running hot.

F35 or F23? Which firmware?

You could open up the top dock and see if anything is blocking the airflow into the fan.

F23, Latest firmware. Was getting the warning SHUTDOWN CAMERA/FAN MAX.
I bypassed the interface box 4 pin power and went straight in with the 8 pin lemo and fixed the problem.
Double checked the IF box and indeed it wasn't snug. All is well now!

Thanks Evan!

Actually the problem came back....ran diagnostics via Ethernet and everything says OK.
Will be opening up the top dock and inspecting the insides.

Anyone else have similar issues? I know Keith Lango had a similar warning...

Hi all,

Though I've been following this thread from the start I'm considering an F35 for an upcoming project. If purchasing in person, are there any warnings to look out for outside of obvious damage? I would take an Odyssey 7Q+, lens and battery to test the camera.

Outside of firing it up and setting it up with the 7Q (will read up on this if I go ahead with it), shooting some frames and reviewing the footage - is there anything else to consider?

Thanks.

Maybe look for hot pixels?
Other than that if it works it works.

Thanks Macgregor, I assumed it was going to be pretty straight forward. Will see what happens.

Another question. Looking at this photo of two F35 PL mounts, the camera on the right seems to have had a padding removed and appears to have either rusty or glue residue beneath - is this an issue? What is this part of the mount for?

Thanks!

That whole PL port looks extra used, I hope you are getting a good deal on this F35. I can't tell from the photo, if it's glue no problem, if it's rust because water was sitting under there, big red flag.

Not even sure if I'll go for it but it is a local ebay auction that keeps getting relisted. It is a bit shady generally, their feedback history is primarily dealing in vintage goods and when asked for samples of their work with the camera they claim their uncle brought it back from Japan but they've never used it. Sounds entirely suspect but since it is available in my city I thoughts I'd ask for any gotchas or 'If it works it works' as it might be worth it.

I figured rust wouldn't be a good sign - had to tell from the pretty poor photos they've provided.
