Recorder/Monitor - My plan is to sell the C30W and replace it with a PIX-E5. Do you think it’s possible to mod this sidefinder to the PIX? And does anyone know the specific name of the EVF mount? I’d like to find an articulating arm that attaches to the EVF mount, or to adapt it to a rosette. Or should I pull the whole EVF mount off and attach it to whatever the mount connects to? Does anyone know what the EVF mount connects to?

I would keep that C30W, it's going to be handy, trust me. Spend some time if you want rebuilding the loupe if you can to get more magnification.
About the recorders, I think you're better with the Odyssey 7Q, as it does everything you need for this camera, and it does not need any multiplexers to get 50p or 444. And they're pretty cheap these days. I would only consider the pix5 or BM video assist if you need a smaller set up.

Lens - Deciding between the cheap Sony Prime Kit, Red 18-50 (or this one if still available) or GL Optics 18-35 (supplemented by a Helios 58). I'd prefer the lightweight-ness and range of the Red but I’ve read that the mechanics are bad and it requires a PL mount mod (or is that just the 17-50?). Thoughts about these lenses would be particularly appreciated.

I would definitely avoid the red 18-50, it's really bad. The sigma 18-35mm is nice but very short as a zoom lens.

AC Adapter - Is this a proper AC adapter? I’m thinking I’ll stick this onto the back whenever possible and also use it as my charger. Does it mount like a v-mount battery? Or would I need to attach this plate? I want to be able to mount it on the IF box where the battery will usually be.

You'll be good with that as it comes. It's Vmount, so it'll power the camera and charge your batteries. Very handy. I used to have one, not sure if I sold it or if I lost it.

Case - This one rolls and fits overhead in an airplane, plus it can become a backpack! I’m worried that the F35 body will be slightly too fat, but I’m going to try it anyways.

Good luck trying to fit an F35 inside a pelican 1510, ha! It's too small!

Filters - Tiffen T1 and Hoya ProND 1.2 screw-ons (good enough for now).

As previously mentioned, just go with IRNDs. And get a polarizer!

Woohoo I got one!! The viewfinder is great indeed, not sure I want to sell it anymore..

First question - is it impossible to get single link out of an IF box SDI? I don't have a multiplexer yet but would like to use the XLRs and it seems I can only get half of the image from each IF box SDI port:

I'm assuming that the monitor out SDI does not carry audio from the IF box XLRs. Seems like this was almost addressed a while ago but I don't see an answer responding specifically to the possibility of single link with audio.

yes, of course you can get single link for regular 422 out of the IF box. Check your menus to make sure the camera is set up in that mode.
Good luck with XLR audio and this camera. I don't think it's worth it.

I'm impressed. not sure if this is optimal, or getting a bigger pelican and doing declaration forms with a starter pistol lol

Good luck getting something from Brazil. That is scam country, to say the least. When/if you do get it, it will likely need a full service that requires an Arri tech. Plenty around town of course. (I really doubt someone will rent an MOS 4-perf camera anymore, but I'm sure you know that.)

By the way, why would someone sand off the Arri logo??

I know right the whole bit about sanding the arri logo off was totally weird haha. But 1k is dirt cheap almost worth the risk, if the camera shows up and works that a very good steal

Yes I was aware of the potential risk of scam. I've been talking with the seller enough to feel it is worthwhile. Also I have confidence in the Ebay/Paypal protection and have used it before when I don't get items.

He claims to have sanded it to avoid high custom fee's which I believe even if was a really dumb move.

It will still be a bit more to get her up and running. I need to get 400 ft mags.

Hard to believe where film cams are going these days. Vince you are right, it could require maintenance, but I have also found that these days there are people in Hollywood who are so nostalgic about the film days that maintenance, processing and scanning can be found for a deal. There is a love for these great cameras and a want to see them continue to work.

Oh I agree that deals can be found and people love them, and of course many of the top films are being shot on FILM, but investing in a worn out (MOS) film camera and expecting use out of it, unless you currently have funding for a movie project and this is your Bcam, and you have an Arri tech who is a friend, is a stretch. These heavily used ebay film camera deals almost always require more work than they are worth. It's like buying a car from 1985- it may run and look ok but be sure it will be in the shop very soon.

Risk is the other HUGE factor. I wouldn't trust that thing on a film shoot one bit. I'd just rent a freshly serviced Arricam LT for some amazing deal and trust that my expensive Kodak stocks are going to make it through in good condition, and that the $100K+ movie won't have to shut down when it breaks.

Not meaning to rain on your deal but I've been through it in the past myself. Hell even F35 deals are getting more risky with the sensor age, Sony service nightmare stories, worry about parts, etc.., and it's more than 10 years younger than the 435's.

hahaha I am exactly the kind of person to want a car from 1985, regardless of the cost of ownership. I totally agree with you it makes no sense financially. I own gear that makes me money and I don't mess around, I get things fixed professionally.

But on the other hand sometimes I buy things that I never expect a cent from, and when I buy those things, I tear them apart down to the last screw. I can't help it, it's just the way I am. I love shooting film, I have a workflow for shooting 16mm on the super cheap so I do believe I can develop a plan for 35mm. However when I shoot film, I don't have anyones money but my own so I am allowed to shoot rolls of 30 year old film, fill the gate with hair and telecine by recording a projector on the wall. I am totally on your side if you think this 435 is to be a professional work horse again, but this is not my style or intention.

I'm sure you will think this is disgusting, but I love the idea of creating looks through the real film process instead of trying to degrade with filter on a computer.

Um, no I don't think it's disgusting at all. I just shot a personal road trip with my S8mm camera in BW and it's now a loved piece of our history, and it's automatically archived for the next 100+ years. Pro8mm did the work and all went very well. I don't agree with filming off a wall for most projects, esp. after you see your images put through a Spirit or Milnm., etc.. I get what you did there however.

I don't use nor understand filters via software actually.

My dream would be to have that new Black Magic film scanner I saw at NAB; it's the only thing BM makes that looks worth an investment for me but it's $30K. Send off your film for lab work and do away with the pricey scanning! I just need a few other film fans to put in and we could all use it as needed. (I can dream cant I?)

Back to the thread topic... sorry about that!

yes back to digital. I find the 1560 is a better size than the 1510, although the 1510 is a great idea for flying. Keep just the valuable F35 brain with you. I bought one with a bunch of foam cutouts from some water test equipment and I just cut the F35 shape into it. Look close there is also a 7Q in there. Besides this I have a soft portabrace with Lens/Mattebox and another pelican with my anton bauer batteries/chargers.

btw the Smallhd 502 is a dream with the F35, I am glad I went with it over the C30W.
