Just got a new camera - Sony F35

You need to drill new holes in plate to make fit on F35, I started a thread on this subject because it saves you quite a bit over the Arri plates. Basically F35 holes are offset to the side like on Arri film cams. I brought mine to a metal shop to have the holes added.

I have been changing my F35 setup around for a while and I do feel I have finally arrived at near perfect handheld setup. The EVF system is all parts made by small rig. They are not rosettes to twist the evf, it just uses adjustable friction, it is easy to get the friction just right to hold the evf and also allow it to be adjusted by hand.

I have been trying to get the EVF setup so it can be adjusted in any direction. Other users have pointed this out before but the perfect way for the evf to be is so you look straight ahead, not tilting your head up or down. If you look at many handheld F35 setups with the Sony EVF, the operator is looking up into the camera which is an awkward way to operate.

Basically the 15mm rod allows adjusting for side to side, I can even go left eye if i want. The nato rail allows the EVF to get out in front of the camera body, perfect place is almost sitting on the matte box. I was able to find a sweet spot using this setup so the camera sits great balanced on the shoulder while i am looking naturally straight forward.

I have obviously modified the top of my F35, but if you had the stock F35 handle, I think it is possible to add a 15mm rod mount to the front of the handle so the same EVF arm could be used with stock F35 handle.

A little tip on cheap EVF's and Sony F35. Originally the cheapo HDMI viewfinders would not work with the F35 because many models do not support the sony 24 psf. In the photos I am using an original cineroid HDMI which did not work with this setup before when I had the hyper deck. The 7q allows PSF to be pulled from the HDMI output so any EVF, and I mean any of the cheap plastic HDMI viewfinders made for DSLR's will work with the setup. The downside is you can't see camera menus, the upside is by going through the 7Q you are able to turn on record tally. Just another cool feature of the 7Q that I wasn't able to do with the Hyperdeck.

Broadcast Companies I work with still use the HDVF viewfinders for Sony 1500 and 2500 HD broadcast cameras. I believe these viewfinders are still needed by big broadcast all over the world, so they have held their high value. The F35 is not in high demand so it is easy to see why original viewfinders are being pulled from F35's.

Hey how'd you get a rosette on the zacuto vct plate? Hard to make out what's going on in there.. just screwed into one of the lower 1/4-20s?

Is that a kinogrip wood grip? I just had one made for me with a start/stop button and lemo port with a custom O7Q+ remote cable. Biggest news was the fabricator even included an inline tally LED that I routed and mounted onto the side of EVF so I can see the light glowing in my peripheral. It's something I've always wanted esp. with the odyssey mounted out of sight its critical to have that tally if I'm one manning the show. I planned to do a write up on this forum with some pics and will follow up soon.

small rig makes this part to attach to the side of the zacuto plate and add rosette, you can put them on both sides. The handle extension is also small rig. The wood handle I found on eBay someone was making them and selling them for $50, It is very close to real Aaton grip.

DarkMatter, that's exactly what I did.. I have the Sony cinealta v2 primes and got a step down for 77mm IRNDs for cost. I didn't see any vignetting on the 25mm. I believe the tiffens are still the best choice for the F35 though schneider makes platinum IRNDs that are comparable but I've only used the 4x5.65s of those.

Cons are:
No threads on the 20mm

You're messing with fiddly threads on a busy set and you and your poor AC might be sweating bullets trying to swap NDs. If you're careful and you don't muscle them on you shouldn't have any issues. I might buy a few step downs and keep them on the lenses for speed. Also gives you insurance in case those fragile little threads bend on you and you have to scrap one.

I'd still tend to use a matte box and try to control stray light bouncing around between the ND and the front element.

Sweet! Thanks for the quick answer trafficn!
Yeah, for the cost savings, I can deal with the cons, even buying extra step down rings i'll still come out ahead!

Got some Sony Pl lenses, they have a 95mm front thread. Crazy idea, thinking to get a 95-77mm step down ring like this one... http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1125841-REG/cavision_art95_77_95mm_to_77mm_step_down.html and some 77mm IRNDs (because it's much more cost effective) Will this idea work, will it cause vignetting, or other problems?
Also are the Tiffen IRNDs still recommended, or is there currently a better choice for F35?

I have a step down ring for exactly that. They will not vignette. The only problem is that the 20mm does not have a filter ring. And depending on how thick your filters are the 25mm could vignette a hint.

Is anyone using a top handle on an IF box? I'm considering getting one to attach there, but am concerned on the amount of stress it will put on the top IF docking port.

Top handle will attach to if box just fine. The if box is designed with "pillars" inside to support weight of cam.

You have eased my worries sir! An image search gives further indication that the IF port can take some real weight indeed, yikes:

New guy on the block

New guy on the block

Hi All,

First off - all praise due to the godfather Macgregor and his disciples - thank you all for blazing the trail.

My name is Theo Schear, I’m a couple years out of college and work as a multimedia producer for the National Doc Unit at Detroit Public TV. I just finished the magnum opus that is “Just got a new camera - Sony F35” and am convinced that I could no longer be happy with anything else (except for an Amira). So I put together an index of all the pieces of my dream rig and will relegate my trusty BMCC to dust-collector/B-cam. For a while I was planning to go with the F23 for those Digiprimes and ENG zooms, 60fps, and internal filters, but thanks to some advice from Jo Kami I realized I wouldn’t be satisfied without the larger sensor’s DOF. Now I’m hoping that some of you seasoned vets would be willing to look over my equipment index before I put cash down…

F35 Body - I found Hunterqual’s old F35 in an eBay listing within driving distance of me. The new owner will give it to me for $4600 including the C30W. Apparently he used it for one project and decided it’s too difficult to travel with. It looks pretty beat up but as long as the image is clean then I’m happy. He hasn’t relisted it yet but I think it comes with most of what Hunterqual sold. Good price right? He’s got the handle on the back but I’ll want the handle on top, do you think it comes with the attachment or do I need to get another?

Recorder/Monitor - My plan is to sell the C30W and replace it with a PIX-E5. Do you think it’s possible to mod this sidefinder to the PIX? And does anyone know the specific name of the EVF mount? I’d like to find an articulating arm that attaches to the EVF mount, or to adapt it to a rosette. Or should I pull the whole EVF mount off and attach it to whatever the mount connects to? Does anyone know what the EVF mount connects to?

Lens - Deciding between the cheap Sony Prime Kit, Red 18-50 (or this one if still available) or GL Optics 18-35 (supplemented by a Helios 58). I'd prefer the lightweight-ness and range of the Red but I’ve read that the mechanics are bad and it requires a PL mount mod (or is that just the 17-50?). Thoughts about these lenses would be particularly appreciated.

AC Adapter - Is this a proper AC adapter? I’m thinking I’ll stick this onto the back whenever possible and also use it as my charger. Does it mount like a v-mount battery? Or would I need to attach this plate? I want to be able to mount it on the IF box where the battery will usually be.

Batteries - These seem like the best deal but has anyone had trouble flying with batteries larger than 160Wh? FAA regulations say it’s outlawed but I’d be surprised if it’s enforced.

Case - This one rolls and fits overhead in an airplane, plus it can become a backpack! I’m worried that the F35 body will be slightly too fat, but I’m going to try it anyways.

Tripod - Vinten11 Tripod Head & Gitzo Legs from Macgregor!

Shoulder Mount - This one (with a 1/4-20 to 3/8-16 screw adapter) is expensive but lightweight and has the most reliable VCT-14 mount, plus rosettes for grips. I’ve read that the F35 has uncentered 3/8” holes on the bottom - is it easy enough to have centered holes made? I’d really like to skip a riser plate.

Follow Focus - This Manfrotto seems like the best quality/cost compromise. Plus a couple of these for aperture and zoom. It seems like nobody else uses a follow focus for zoom/aperture, is there a reason?

Filters - Tiffen T1 and Hoya ProND 1.2 screw-ons (good enough for now).

Shotgun Mount - I’d like to mount a shotgun on the side like this. Do you think that guy just drilled on one of these?

Multiplexer - Do you need one to get 50p? Don’t think I need the 4:4:4 yet.

Any insight or guidance would be much appreciated! Thanks again to everyone for sharing the knowledge. Couldn't be more excited to get my hands on one of these.

Theo

P.s. My dvxuser membership was finally activated this morning, but now that I can post I can’t send private messages… anyone know why that would be?

Mac, which Tiffen IRND's do you recommend? It obviously depends on shooting situations but if you could only get a few which would you choose?

I'm not going to comment on anything but the battery question.

Airline regulations for lithium battery transport are there for a reason. Airliners have burned and crashed directly because of lithium battery fires. These rules are not arbitrary and are there for the safety of everyone. Just because you think you might be able to get away with transporting them doesn't mean it is something you should do. It is not only wrong, it is dangerous and stupid. Don't.

Got it, thanks for letting me know.
