Just got a new camera - Sony F35

HI,

this might sound as a strange question, but is it possible to record from a portable audio recorder (with mic) for instance a zoom H4N into the xlr inputs of the if-box? Google didn't really help, I only found info around hdslr.

How do you mean MR? The XLRs on the IF box are an input, the sound going to them would be laid onto the HD-SDI output, so if you had a recorder on there then the sound would be recorded.

The F35 is really built as a separate sound machine, to be honest

If you are recording to a device such as an Odyssey7Q+, then the embedded audio on the SDI stream would be captured. So you could take the output of the Zoom, feed it into the IF box to embed, and then record this on the Odyssey.

The IF box audio circuitry is top notch, but it doesn't offer any level adjustment. If you use an external mixer and feed to the IF box, the results should be as good as the external mixer and operator are. Mind you, the Zoom is very much the low end of the market.

IF box audio is fed out only - you will not get the IF fed audio on the other dock port or on the monitor ports. Also, there is a camera menu setting that controls whether the IF box audio goes to SDI audio channels 1/2 or 5/6. Some SDI recorders may ignore the 5/6 audio.

I would say that the F35 was designed to have audio mixed separately - but not necessarily recorded separately - although, most productions that could afford the F35 in it's prime likely did record audio separately, if only as a backup.

there are a couple of Otto Nemenz F65 in V3.0, so it should not be a problem, there is space to put in the oled connection.
I wonder what Sony will charge for the update, over a year ago it was free: so check before buying !

I'm sure it's been discussed somewhere in this forum, but what are the differences between F65s? is there more than 1 model?

Only one model of F65, but there have been some updates offered by Sony and it's possible that owners didn't take advantage of them (pretty sure they were all free but involved sending the camera to Sony).

Yeah - only one model of F65. Originally it was proposed that there would be a standard camera and a camera with the rotary shutter + ND wheel. In the end they only made the "RS" model. Hence a few people thinking the F65 was discontinued, when they were looking at old listings for models that never actually sold.

The F65 update I believe was free at the time to the original owner of the camera. Mine was done by the owner before I took delivery (although Sony ****ed it up), however a Sony centre here were quoting me around £1,000 if I did the upgrade myself. IT was a £900 kit I think, plus fitting.

It's a big software and hardware update for the camera. The biggest addition is a new VF port, which lets you use the OLED viewfinder (not the LCD) from the F55.

Recording through hd-sdi is what I want to do indeed.
I have done this before with a separate sound guy with a mixette that went fine, although we had 8 tracks with each clip while only the first 2 tracks were containing sound. But we worked around that problem.

But this time I need something different, since it could sometimes be one-man band-ish.
Though the good thing is that I can choose my own pace and that quite a bit of it will be controlled interviews.
I know the F35 originally is not really designed for this.

I was thinking of something like a zoom H4N or SUCH, of course I can capture the sound off the camera. But was wondering if it were possible to feed the H4N or such into the IF-Box XLR to skip the syncing part as well.

This seems like a very quick & easy setup: (but how acceptable is the sound with no mixing/setting levels?)

As long as you properly setup your chain with tone etc etc... then the sound quality should be superb. The F35 won't be detrimental to the quality of the sound, at all.

I would really advise against trying to use the F35 as a one-man-band though, I know a few on here have, but it's really outside the camera's comfort zone.

M.R. - are you using a Hyperdeck? I think we found that the Hyperdeck records 8 tracks without the option to only record 2. Atomos and 7Q will record 2 channels properly.

Are you talking about that rig picture set-up with the microphone directly fed into the XLR input of the if box?
Or are you just speaking in general?

AH yes! I totally forgot about that.
7Q or 7Q+ I'm planning on one, but that's not for right now.

What I meant was making sure that the level going in to the camera is correct, if you're a one man band and the camera is on your shoulder and you realise the levels are set wrong and all your sound is clipping, you're screwed

Haha that's me and my F35 above. I almost exclusively use the 7Q instead of the pix240i at this point, but the nice thing about the pix was its audio capabilities, mainly in control and input (thought at a power and size cost....)

I have had really good success recording scratch audio through the F35, whether through a scratch mic or a line output from the sound mixer, but almost always would re-sync and use in post. Depending on what I was doing I would feel pretty comfortable one man banding it with the F35... though even with a simpler camera in a one man band situation if audio was going to be complicated enough that I needed to ride levels I would probably try to find someone to be dedicated to sound.... like I would never be changing levels too much on something on my FS7 or anything like that... I'd basically treat it very similar to how I'd treat the F35.

That being said, the F35 seems to have a solid amount of overhead before clipping and has pretty robust audio circuitry (beyond it being limited). I've used stuff I've recorded through the IF box/7Q and it's sounded great.

YO skatajkid!

Cool setup!
And thanks for chiming in.
I agree, I'm not planning on adjusting the levels constantly!
The sound doesn't have to be perfect. I just want acceptable sound in general, for the interviews I want the voices to be clear (but those are in a much more controlled situation)
SO I'm happy to hear a mic directly fed to the IF-Box is ok most of the times!
