Just got a new camera - Sony F35

20 kg at the back at 35 celsius degree was no fun :D btw it was a 16mm APS C lens from walimex ( rokinon ). It was my first color grading, what do you think about it? Tried to simulate film as much I could: recorded filmscan 1 and applied impulz 250d film lut and a fast color correction.

Viewfinder for the F35?

Viewfinder for the F35?

Okay, so I'm joining the F35 cult. I acknowledge the great Mac as our fearless leader and ask for some advice regarding a viewfinder. I have an alphatron right now and It's okay but I'm looking at:

HDVF-C30W, but, leaning toward, these two:

HDVF-C35W
Zacuto Gratical

Any insights, pro/con of these finders? How much difference does the C35W make over the C30W?

Thank you guys for fighting the good fight!

Alan

Avoid the C35W

The C30WR is the one to go for.

And there's no cult. The F35 attributes and results are very real. ;)

The C30W is preferable to either of those IMHO. A 30WR is best but if the budget is tight the 30w is fine.

The 35 is a big old ***** and can interfere with bigger lenses or if you have smaller lenses your matte box.

The zacuto gratical sounds like a nice bit of kit but I know a chap who bought one and sent it straight back to the factory because he had real issues with the colours it was producing.

If you are using a 7Q as a recorder it opens up a lot of options for viewfinders as well. I bought a cheap cineroid that works fine because the 7Q can change the output format of the hdmi. Before, most older and low end viewfinders couldn't recognize the 24psf correctly. having used and held the new smallhd 502, I can say it is very nice form for a camera like the F35. I like the option of removing the evf so 502 is top of line in my book.

One thing to consider with external viewfinders, and it is kind of a big consideration as cheap dslr cables break quickly over time, is that the Sony viewfinders do have the single cable. I have gone from a D-tap splitter powering everything to using individual batteries on EVF, 7Q and F35 in order to reduce cable mess. 7Q is very good on little batteries so that helps a lot. I also think the AB batteries last a bit longer on the F35 without the high drain of all 3 items at the same time. I think new external EVF is smarter because you can use it with all cameras, but it is another consideration that the power and video feed have to be run to the EVF if it isn't a Sony F35 model viewfinder.

Hello everyone !

I have also decided to sell my Sony F35.

I have purchased it last summer from Alan Gordon Enterprises in Los Angeles. I need to sell it due to financial reasons.

Pictures are attached. http://imgur.com/a/0pbl1#0

Location of the camera is Frankfurt, Germany.

Asking for $11,000. (Price Drop: NOW $10,000)

Selling as complete package only.

An interesting fact is that I have noticed while checking the User settings, that besides the S-Log settings, there are several PanaLog settings installed in the camera. (PanaLog4_f35 / PanaLog-3 / PanaLog-4 / PanaLog-5)

Send me an email if interested to make an offer: DavidatCurvyroadpicturesdotcom

Is this the right deck to use with F35 and F9000PL tapes to capture? Only 2 hours left and 2500 is quite a bit, still if anyone is interested in the tape workflow, this might be a good deal. Haven't seen many of these decks sell at auction prices. It has cine alta logo on it so I was hoping this works with F35 10-bit 422.

As I continue to hunt for a 2nd F35 package, my first F35 being a Franken35 perhaps the most hacked apart one there is- I want to find a complete F35 with all original parts and tape deck. I know the F35 with 7Q is a completely new camera and I love it. I like idea of trying to track down a complete original F35, I know tape is limited to 10-bit, but it would be cool to me to have every F35 in camera function working and be able to do things like speed ramp.

The tape deck would be great to have, but is it required? Can the 7Q record straight from the SDI in playback. Am I wrong in thinking I could "dump" tapes to 7Q Drives. What is the playback limited to? 10-bit 422?

I know there are downsides to using tape deck for rewind and playback - it leads to broken parts in the moving drum. However the tape decks will continue to fall in price. It will be easy to replace SRW1 in a few years as the use completely dies. I guess my question is, is it possible to take the Sony F35 with SRW1 package, perhaps the most expensive digital camera ever made, and use it like I did my DVX100 where the camera would shoot the tape, then I would rewind in camera and capture to hard drive in real time playback.

Yachacha

That is an HDCAM deck. It is NOT HDCAM SR - which is the F35's recorded format. That deck is also playback only.

If anyone wants an HDCAM SR deck which also docks with the F35 cheap, PM me direct.

You want the SRW-1 with SR-PC1 package, best way to do what you are talking about - it is possible.

Wrong deck. Get the SRW-1 and SRPC1. I already sold mine, but it went for less than that deck.

Hi guis! and what is the difference of 24p? and 24psf?

The F35 is capable of true 24 frames per second, as well as 23.98, so keep in mind it's possible to have 23.98p, 23.98psf, 24p, and 24psf. That said - "psf" is an abbreviation for "progressive segmented frame(s)" and it's really a data transmission trick. A 24p and a 24psf frame both have the same image sensor information, but they are transmitted over SDI differently. The 24psf is transmitted in interlaced fields, in such a manner that dedicated broadcast equipment designed for, and only accepting interlaced content will accept the 24psf frame. This allows for storage of progressive content on interlaced deck/tape formats, and transmission through hardware expecting interlaced footage. While psf serves far less use in today's tapeless world, it served as an important cost reduction tool as progressive systems were developing.

Using psf instead of pure progressive confers no image benefits, and should only be used to increase compatibility with external hardware like monitors, converters, and recorders, on an as needed basis. On a separate note - you should only use pure 24fps (instead onf 23.98) if you're planning on a film out. For content likely to be shown on televisions, 23.98 is the far more prevalent standard today, and will mix far better with any b camera content, as most cameras only support 23.98 (even if they call it 24)

Thanks!!! U power! xD

Both my hyper deck and 7Q have only ever seen PSF from my F35 regardless of the internal setting. Are you able to record true 24P and 23.98P with your Sony recorder? Currently out the SDI port if the camera is set to 23.98 or 24P, it is going to be PSF.

You say "SDI port"... are you referring to the monitor out ports on the body of the camera, or the A/B ports on the IF Box? If you're using the monitor ports on the body, those are configured for maximum compatibility with monitors, not the highest settings for recording.

I have never seen actual "P" and not "PSF" for 24/25 fps--James has tinkered with the camera's guts much more than I, but I can't find a reference to it in the manual or menus either. Does it exist? I know 50p is actually "P" and not PSF, however.

Pretty sure it's all PSF. The F35 was the only camera ever built that output Dual-Link and 12-bit with a PSF structure, not a P structure. That was the coding Convergent Design had to do in order to support the camera with our 12-bit 4:4:4 DPX mode.
