Just got a new camera - Sony F35

Seems a video online mentioned the Alexa was cast iron, apparently isn't. Not sure if it is steel or aluminium though.

The F65 is plastic over an aluminium skeleton I believe. The F35 I think may have had some magnesium in there too (or mag alloy)

SONY slashes prices on their Cine lenses...

Well, not much activity here lately. So like a true rebel, I thought I would stir things up a bit. The SONY CineAlta 4K 6 lens set has dropped in price from $20,900 down to $12,900, or just over $2K a piece. I know MacGreggor mounted them up for a test a while back, but I didn't see much else reported. I have the original 3 lens set and despite Romper Room build quality, every once in a while I see a shot that make me say WoW, that's a nice image.

The only thing I've seen shot is a SONY promo piece shot on an overcast day. They looked okay, but it was really hard to tell. The lenses did do very odd things when the focus was racked in on the short end of the scale. Not sure what that was about. Must have been a Minolta thing.

So what do you say McGreggor, they were worth a look at $21,000 how do they fare at $13,000/$2150 each, or less than CP.2? Not to mention they are faster in some cases than the zeiss...

Is everyone off contemplating a FS7 purchase?

Alan

ajhill,

I've shot couple of projects with the FS7. Not much different from the new lower-end F family cameras (FS700, F5) in terms of color rendition and resolution. Not to say it's not a good camera, in the right hand... well.. Here where I live (Hanoi, Vietnam) it barely sits on the shelves, so that's telling at least for me.

I did buy these lenses. Best lenses ever for this price. Even for twice their price.

For an owner/operator set of glass, I think they make a lot of sense. They're a bit heftier than some of the options out there, but hardly unreasonably so. My bigger concern would simply be support and servicing of the lenses down the line. Given that Sony don't appear to have even given the lenses a distinct name, I think the likelihood of them abandoning production/support of them down the line is worryingly high. And if that does happen, where do you get them serviced or source replacement parts from? Glass is a long-term investment, so it matters knowing that you'll have support a long time into the future.

Since my problem has to do with F35 footage, I guess I might as well also ask you guys! Suddenly my MacBook won't play DNxHD files anymore (in a Quicktime wrapper, from a Hyperdeck). I've tried reinstalling the codecs, but to no avail.

In Premiere the files play, but are all-black. In VLC they play with fragments of sound, but no picture. Quicktime and MPEG Streamclip won't open them at all. I've tried with footage from lots of different projects and drives, but the problem prevails. Any clues?

Thanks! But wouldn't it be strange if that issue only affected dnxhd? Could it be a quicktime issue, perhaps? After all, these files are in a mov wrapper.

after using Zeiss cp with 14 blade aperatures , personally less blades doesnt work for me. i love bokeh with more blades. to me it looks more eye pleasing probably cause a circular iris is more like our black hole pupils. the zeiss cp glass still seem hard to beat in quality and price.

Can someone telll me how I can get Slow Motion picture from the f35? I record to a Cinedeck Ex and dont know the settings should be done in Camera and Cinedeck.

Another question. What is the difference between S24P and _24P?
thx

Sindi

The cinedeck will only support 50P at 4:2:2, so you must select 50P 4:2:2 in camera (4:4:4 will not work)

The "S" frame rates are select frame rates - meaning you can choose any frame rate up to that frame rate. The cinedeck doesnt fully support this feature but I used it to get some interesting effects (eg. shooting 16-18fps in S25 gives you an 8mm type of motion)

Yeah I noticed that only 50p 422 works.

I think the "s" function is useless for me.

And when I record In 50fps, do I " under crank " the shot in camera, cinedeck or in post?

Thanks for your fast response. Thought it should be done like in f3 in the menu Of the cam.

Soon will follow 1,3x anamorphot test material.

No, if you have an SR tape deck then the "SR motion" function will work - or a codex or similar - but not with the cinedeck

Can someone tell me for what the antenna of the cinedeck ex is for?

And... I want to view the image on set on Blackmagic smart view hd, so I need something wireless from the cinedeck sdi out to the Blackmagic sdi in, can someone tell me a cheap solution (a kind of sdi wireless transmitter)?

Sindi, the antenna is used to extend the wifi range of the cinedeck.

Am I the only one experiencing problems with F35 footage and pretty much any LUT I throw onto it? With macgregors LUT, for example I tend to get dramatically underexposed results, even though everything looked perfect with the monitoring LUT in camera. Even when pushing and pulling the material it's a challenge to get back to the DR I saw on set.
