Just got a new camera - Sony F35

I would second the caution to avoid such rabid enthusiasm that it gets disregarded as "fanboyism". The F35 isn't perfect, or else we wouldn't talk so frequently about how we'd like to mod it. It's a beautiful camera that is more competitive in image than many give it credit for, but don't be fooled - whether it takes five years or fifty, it will be outshined in virtually every way.

As for your comments about my mod work - even if it goes perfectly according to my plans, it will have limitations. It will not be a strong or complete solution for variable frame recording. I have some vague thoughts on how to eventually remedy this - but nothing that can be relied on currently.

IS THAT BATMAN?!?!?

But for real, Could be just from the AVC vs 10-bit prores but given how close the images appear, the BATMAN on the right has more blood, more life in him. The batman on the left feels like he isn't the real batman. Just my 2cents.

EDIT: Oh and I was really impressed the F35 had more highlight room, I was thinking the A7s might have an edge there.

Mac--impressive how well they match! How much work did it take to match the grading of the a7s to the f35?

Yes I'm surprised to see how well they match to my eyes. Now, my eyes aren't the best though.
The A7s required about 10 nodes of grading while the F35 just needed 3.
Basically most of the work on the A7s had to do with desaturating highlights and lowering reds a bit. I stopped at the point where they look close enough even when they still show some differences. But hey, the overall look is pretty close to the F35 in Slog. A 5D or similar cameras would not get this close at all to the look of the big camera.

Now of course, the A7s in 1080p is softer, has those ugly highlight edge issues, lots of rolling shutter etc

I remember a very interesting, and controversial camera test, one of the Zacuto tests. I can't recall which year. Each camera had a DoP, a grade, and a scene to light. There was a "basic" setup and they then were allowed to do what they like.

This was the famous scene where Francis Ford Coppola preferred an iPhone over an Alexa, or whatever. It turns out the only company not making any changes were Sony. The iPhone footage took something like an hour extra to light and 45 minutes in post, for one shot. Time that would be very expensive in reality!

Great Zacuto Shootout

Great Zacuto Shootout

I was part of the audience for the L.A. screening and made a comment pretty much to the point that you have to consider the total time involved to get the image when deciding on a camera to use. At the time there was a little "DSLRs are just as good as professional motion picture cameras" going around town. Probably still is a bit of that going around. I mean where does it end? When we have 24 stops of latitude and don't "need" to light anything? It seems Hollywood is coming back to the no-budget student approach. Mainly because it saves a lot of money. Just doesn't look so good.

It will be nice when all this settles down and we get back to good lighting.

The goofy thing about people who think like this is just because you can see a lot of range within the light that's there...it doesn't mean it's good light lol. DR doesn't mean you don't have to light...bad light is bad light whether it's natural or not and whether you can see into the highlights/shadows or not.

^^This

Never go into a dark room, say "hey there's enough light here" and expect it to look like film. It just won't.

Even some big hollywood blockbusters no longer look like old big hollywood movies because they don't need to light streets up at night anymore.

F35 wins of course but man, for locked off shots they're close.
Would like to see a similar comparison when the A7s is hooked up-to a 4k recording Atomos Shogun (due soon from Atomos)

When it comes to camera movement though the A7s rolling shutter looks like a shocker..

Enthusiasm is great, but lets not get into fanboyism.

Guys you need to get a sense of humor.:cheesy: Read my post again.

Is also my opinion and I will continue express it. Sorry.

Yes not perfect but still kick the butt. If it was perfect? LOL.

Coppola picked GH2 not iPhone.:)

Actually I just remembered, SJX, did you get your F35 working again?

Thanks for asking.

It was damaged viewfinder. Now I have option of buy it without viewfinder for discount price. I got it yesterday again and now I play with it. I have sdi small monitor now to see. I have many questions about it.

White balance question. If wb is locked in cine mode and only preset 5600 is possible how you do? Wb change during whole day, morning afternoon almost every hour.

I know custom allow wb but cine is best right?
