Just got a new camera - Sony F35

Awesome, thanks for posting Hunter! Did you run a long the beach for some of those tracking shots? Seemed pretty level, considering the weight of the camera and how low it was. Lovely, lovely.

Watched it a few more times. There is some damn fine operating going on there.

Beautiful stuff man. No let's see some more :)

Lovely stuff there Hunter! are you on 24 or 25P? 48th or 50th shutter?
You seem to find the sweet spot of exposure to avoid the "vertical smear" how are you doing that? Everytime I shoot into the sun, it smears. But I do shoot mainly darker skin tones, and maybe I'm always up a stop or two more than I would be on lighter skin tones, maybe thats it.

Thanks guys- I made it downloadable for a while if you wanted to download it. Regarding the smear- Im not sure, sometimes it shows up and sometimes it doesnt, I try to stop down if I can until it goes away but I think its mostly just luck. I didn't use the smear reducer because it was making weird trailing artifacts.

for everyone who is curious on the f35 - to go to the service menu hold down the programming threee buttons (1, 2, 3) - push in the jog wheel and press the MENU button - and then a secret SERVICE menu will appear where you can update firmware, etc

Sorry I have been away for a little while and just logged in to watch this clip Hunter. Looks fabulous, really gorgeous work and a such an emotive piece. Well done, it's certainly inspired me to get mine out again. My main issue with my F35 is not having the double backup you get with footage if the Samurai etc fails (which happened to me for the first time two weeks ago). At least with my F3 (and PMW-700) you can always use the cameras internal recording as a backup. But I guess this is the chance you take.

Keep it up Hunter

After taking a peak inside the Hyperdeck, you need a Torx T10, I discovered there was a small gap of space on both sides of the metal body which would allow small screws without rubbing or damaging the hyperdeck. Please note I drilled holes in the hyperdeck but left the Anton Bauer plate and the IF box connection untouched.

I drilled 8 small holes where the IF box connection would line up with the hyperdeck back plate. I was able to find 6 that lined up with the Anton Bauer plate, but it did require removing the battery which is held in with adhesive. Once the screws were in, I covered the ones that were over the battery with tape to avoid any metal cutting the plastic casing. I found very small screws which had flat heads, and tiny bolts which would fit inside the holes already made in the IF box and the Anton Bauer plate.

Overall it is extremely solid now, I would feel good bringing it on a production. All this requires is tracking down some small specialty screws and nuts, a drill, Torx T10 for the hyperdeck and regular screwdrivers.

I have found the part from sony which is the connector for the IF box to the f35 body, price is only $105. Search for CA JOINT. This could be very useful as a dead mount for any recorder/battery plate without having to take apart the IF box.

Macgregor, would you mind me asking where you got the F35 plate with 15mm rods? I am assuming this is a custom made item by a specific rental house? I have not been able to find another like it. Have you made progress with the KiPro Quad? It seem that a double system of camera, and IF box are required for troubleshooting where your issue is, however I know this is not easy to come by. Perhaps some special line from the camera to the IF box is used in the 12-bit signal that is not normally used. The pins between the IF box and the F35 mount could be a possible weak point, also the ribbon cables inside are another place damage could easily occur if opened and handled incorrectly. Although a replacement IF box is an outrageous price, tracking down the broken component might be worthwhile.

Can I just warn F35 shooters out there NOT to use the Atomos Samurai with the camera. For the second time in really as many shoots, somehow the combination between the camera and the F35 - deleled the contents of the Samurai's drive. Just at the end of a mornings shooting stock shots on a beautiful day for a documentary I am making, all the footage just vanished. This is the end of the Samurai for the F35 for me (I have ever had a problem with the Samurai and my F3). Has anyone had any issues with the hyperdeck. losing footage etc? I have to look elsewhere and this seems like the soundest option. Sparky

That is disconcerting. I happen to have both the Samurai and the Hyperdeck. The plan was to keep one of them and sell the other. Up til now I was planning on keeping the Samurai due to it's monitoring and the SSDs can be formatted normally on a PC (As a PC user I find Hyperdeck's formatting paradigm a pain).

I see you mentioned spinning drives on your Samurai. have you tried using SSD's instead?

Can you use SSD's on the Samurai? That could be a solution, I didn't know you could. I think this is the main issue, the spinning drive must be getting a knock and the spindle coming loose and thus not being able to read/write the drive. I use Sony Vegas and can edit the pro res files without any issue from the Samurai - won't this be the case with the Pro Res files from the Hyperdeck. I know McGreggor uses a Hyperdeck and edits with Vegas too. The Hyperdeck also seems like a great alternative as you can easily mount it to your V-LOCK battery, as opposed to the Samurai hanging off a Noga arm. Thanks for reply, Sparky

I have both and havent had any issues with the samurai- probably only recorded 10-15 hours of footage to intel SSD's but no issues so far (except repeat file naming after formatting which causes premiere to crash)

I used the samurai just because its nice to check playback without having to use another lcd, Id like to rig a hyper deck though on the camera and just use that- but the little DIN bnc cables freak me out.
