Just got a new camera - Sony F35

Still amazed how this thread has developed. I was so close to going that route, after Miguel posted the first things. All the best to you happy f35 shooters, please don´t forget to post LOTS OF FOOTAGE, we all love SonyPorn;)

They only list it as an f65 plate but inside it had installation instructions for the f35 also. Also the one photographed is not exactly what I got, mine was a little taller and had the additional plate which can be removed with the 4 thumb screws. After letting the epoxy set it is very solid, however I think I can physically screw the f35 mount onto the hyperdeck plate for added piece of mind. I just found a store yesterday with lots of tiny bolts and screws, I'm going to try to drill into the hyperdeck cover and add small screws holding the plate on, the trick was finding small enough nuts to fit inside the grooves of the mount without sticking so far out they will rub when it is connected. Optimally, you would have a cage around the hyperdeck which allowed bolts to be added to either side.

Very close to purchasing an F35. But I'm suddenly worried about the issue of segmented frames. Sony says that the camera outputs at 1080PsF23.97. Blackmagic says that the hyperdeck will record at 1080Psf, but I'm still concerned. How does the Hyperdeck shuttle detect the segment frame? And if it doesn't, are you recording at half the resolution because the deck only captures one field instead of the two fields that contain the full frame? Can anyone tell me how this works?

Macgregor posted some footage he shot at a Mardi Gras celebration. Some of it was shot at 23.97 and some at 59.94 interlaced. He remarked that he didn't see much difference between the progressive and interlaced footage. I have to admit I couldn't see any difference at all. I wonder if this is because even when he is shooting 23.97 the hyperdeck shuttle is only recording one of the two fields that make up the segmented (PsF) frame?

There is definately a difference, actually half the info had to be thrown away. The point was that with that subject I couldgetaway interpolating 60i to get 60p and no one could see it.
I think 23.976 gets recorded as p. 25 fps gets recorded as psf. I've never had any issues with fields in 23.976 mode.

Hmm. I'm still suspicious. But I want this camera. I wasn't super impressed by a lot of the frame captures. Looked like nice dslr stills. But then I downloaded some of Macgregor's footage, transferred to Blu-ray and played on my television. I was blown away. There is just something magical about this footage (I'm hoping it is not all attributed to some sort of magic mojo Macgregor is applying in Resolve).

By the way, is there anyway I can get the serial number of your camera? Also could I get the name of the company that did your Nikon modification, Macgregor? Would really appreciate it.

I see no reason to be suspicious, stats79. 23.976 is a perfectly normal framerate, after all, so I see no reason why blackmagic's technicians wouldn't account for it. No missing fields or dropped frames in my footage, at least.

On another note: You're probably aware of this already, but it certainly takes some effort to make this cam production ready. It's definitely not a "pick up and play"-thing like the F3. It's all worth it, though! Feels good on your shoulder when you have it all set up - feels even better when you look through the footage afterwards :)

I may be the proud owner of a SRW-9000PL. I'm ambivalent. Have been following this thread for about a week and I think I've read almost every page of it. Really wanted this camera. Made a few bids on an F35 on ebay, but none were accepted. Was under the impression that the 9000PL was more or less the same camera, just in a shoulder mount form factor. Saw one on ebay, made a real low-ball offer and...strangely enough, they accepted.

What do you guys think? Is there something about the f35 that I will miss with the 9000PL? (other than the cobbled together shoulder mount rigs)

I believe 9000PL was in many ways a successor to the F35, made for productions that needed a more convenient form factor. The image should be identical, I think. It's quite a bit bigger though, isn't it?

Only bigger if you compare the f35 without a deck on!

Completely stripped it is 14+ pounds. So 4+ pounds heavier than the F35. But it is nice to be able to record 50p with the built in deck. And as Macgregor suggested just play back out to the hyperdeck shuttle at 23.97. I'm seriously thinking of flying up to New York to check it out and then fly home with it. Have heard too many horror stories on this thread about shipping gorillas damaging cameras in transit.

I'm going to try to get the F35 working with the Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q when it comes out - 1080p 60, 12 bit - no clipping - that's the dream. lets see if it delivers on its dream :)

Also EC Video is selling a Sony SRR1 for 5k with 2 512 gb cards. you just need to get the card reader which is only 2k. Poor Sony. Charging pre-industry shift prices.

Same here, already ordered the CD Odyssey 7Q, lets hope. Maybe one day We can actually use the full range we see available on the waveform ;)

The SR-R1 is a nice option, was looking at that deal too, but alas, it is very heavy, and a onbaord monitor would be needed too. All getting a bit much for the poor shoulders.
