Just got a new camera - Sony F35

Damn that was supposed to be private- fixed now. Sorry im in the middle of ruff cuts to share with agency and client, I can't make it public at the moment, but the project will be done really soon and I'll post then (probably this weekend or early next week) sorry dudes!

Sorry for blowing up your spot man....I didn't know... but I really dug it :)

Thanks Hunter and Justin. As you know, this camera is just plain fun to shoot with!

We were pleasantly surprised to find that no one bothered us with it, either; maybe because it looks like only half a camera with my small Zeiss lenses...

We tried some footage at 60i that actually looks pretty convincing, but we may stick with 50p going forward.

What recorder you using Jon? any prematurely clipped highlights?

I've been working on the idea of making a custom part to fit the hyperdeck shuttle inside the interface box. It would be awesome to have internal recorder in this camera, right?
The idea is to custom made the rear lid of the IF box, and make a thicker one. Once the shuttle is inside, we can plug the SDI and power wires directly, so you would not even need cables outside the unit. An opening in the top would let you swap the SSDs and of course, you'd still be able to have a Vmount battery plate on the back. The custom part doesn't seem too hard to make, we'd just need a cad guy and a place to manufacture this.

@Jusgorllia I've got the Pix 240i. There are some tests earlier in the thread about Prores and the Pix not capturing superwhites, but honestly I've been satisfied with the performance.

That hasn't been my experience. I've seen blown out windows cut at 960 with 422 as well, so I think the recorder conforms to Rec 709. It's actually something i've been keeping an eye on, because there have also been times when I get full range highlights.

But in 422 you can recover the highlights by switching to full range in davinci resolve. We weren't able to do that with 444 files.

Sounds like a good idea.

Had a bit of an aha moment today when I was organizing my microforce. I have one microforce cable which has the same layout at the 12v out of the F35, it also came with a splitter box for that connection which I never knew what it was for. Problem is, it does not work, at least with the micro force. My suspicion is that this port does not work unless you are using the actual power input on the camera. No way to test this yet unless I purchase the gold plate for the f35. Good news is that you might be able to order one of these connectors from Preston Cinema in Santa Monica.

Lets do it! We just need some help for this.
3d printing maybe? Machinist?

Do you have a drawing of the design? Even scribbles along with maybe some photos of the parts would be a start. I have access to a plastics based 3d printer for prototyping. One of the nice perks of my job. I've done the 3d printing thing before, including making the CG model. The products it makes are not super durable, but they are good enough to test ideas. Our hardware guys use it to try out stuff all the time before they send he designs to the machine shop. I have open access to our full machine shop, too. They're willing to train me how to use the CNC machines and such, but I wouldn't want to promise anything on that front.

Repeat question: What type of Bag is everyone using? Looking for a functional but small bag to carry F 35 body and it's accessories. Smaller the better. Not to travel on airplanes or anything. Just around town.

This is the bag I use (actually 2 of them right now for extra lenses and matte box and lots of accessories): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002PU9SQU/ref=oh_details_o08_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
But the F35 with 2 batteries, charger, evf, hyperdec, cables and 1-2 lenses fit in one of these bags. It's pretty tight but it fits well and seems well protected. ANd it's small enough to move around the city.

Edit: I saw the price went up, I paid $180 for the bag last summer.

Macgregor,
I'm doing my best to respond while traveling, but it is not easy to say the least I'm afraid. (Cel phone access only and then only intermittently working...)

Let's review the information we do know at this point about your Sony F35 and Ki Pro Quad configuration.

You stated: "I made sure the Quad works by testing it in the editing room and sending several video formats. It saw them all.
And again, interestingly, the Quad can also see all the video formats from the F35 if we passthru the signal through the blackmagic Hyperdeck (except for those that require dual link of course)."

- There are some clues here... First, it seems likely that the Ki Pro Quad is not defective in terms of it's SDI input connectors since it recognizes signals from a video source other than the Sony F35. Another clue is that when you connected the Sony F35 SDI A output to your Hyperdeck Shuttle, then the Hyperdeck Shuttle output to the Ki Pro Quad input via a signal loop through, that produced a signal that the Ki Pro Quad would accept; the Hyperdeck Shuttle may have stripped out offending ancillary data (such as improper VPID or metadata) from the F35 SDI signal or re-clocked the SDI signal if the F35 source had bad timing. The final additional clue is that the Sony F35 SDI monitor output (not the interface box SDI output) appears to work when connected to the Ki Pro Quad. All of these things would lead one to believe that the SDI outputs from the Sony F35 interface box, when connected directly to the Ki Pro Quad, are the root of your issue. Therefore, it might be good to review the Sony F35 settings.

I'm not asking the following questions to belabor this matter, but to get a more complete understanding of the settings being used on your Sony F35.

1 - You don't see (SET FORMAT) appearing in the Sony F35 user interface instead of CURRENT do you?

2 - does SELECT FPS display a value in parentheses, such as (23.98)?

3 - the RAMP function is not enabled is it?

4 - in the MAINTENANCE menu, BASE SETTING, what SHOOT MODE, D-RANGE and COLOR SPACE are selected?

5 - in the MAINTENANCE menu, OUTPUT FORMAT, what do CURRENT, SCAN, FRAME, FIELD,
SIGNAL and SELECT FPS indicate?

6 - in the MAINTENANCE menu, GENLOCK, what is selected for REFERENCE?

7 - in the MAINTENANCE menu, GENLOCK, what is selected for STATUS?

8 - in the MAINTENANCE menu, METADATA, what are EMBEDDED, ANC LINE, TYPE, REC MS WRITE, PLAY MS WRITE, and DISP ON REC set to?

9 - in the DIAGNOSIS menu, do all items appear to be operational and as expected?

If you can supply us with these specific Sony F35 menu parameter selections that would be valuable in our effort to determine what may be causing your issues.

On the Ki Pro Quad, it would be good to verify the settings as well:

10 - in the CONFIG>1.1 Record Type, what is the setting?

11 - in the CONFIG>1.4 In Convert, what is the setting?

12 - in the CONFIG>1.5 Out Convert, what is the setting?

13 - in the CONFIG>1.6 SDI Out, what is the setting?

14 - in the CONFIG>2.1 Video Input, what is the setting?

15 - in the CONFIG>2.2 Audio Input, what is the setting?

16 - in the CONFIG>6.1 Genlock, what is the setting?

17 - in the CONFIG>8.0 TC In, what is the setting?

18 - in the CONFIG>8.3 Arm Recording, what is the setting?

19 - in the CONFIG>13.1 Camera Data, what is the setting?

20 - in the CONFIG>32.0 Loss of Video, what is the setting?

21 - in the MEDIA>12.1 Media State, what is the setting?

22 - in the MEDIA>12.2 Rollover, what is the setting?

23 - in the MEDIA>14.1 Encode Type, what is the setting?

As much specific information about these settings as you can supply would be appreciated as we try to assist you.

Regarding the QuickTime files in Resolve, as you stated: "The files open fine in QTplayer and FCP. They just don't show up in Resolve. This happens in windows and macOS. And I've read other people comments having the same issue."

The fact that the files open without issue in a multitude of other applications may mean that there is an issue specific to DaVinci Resolve's QuickTime importer; this seems probable considering, as you note, that the files open without issue in your other applications.

Please let me know if you can provide the information for the numbered questions above. Again, just to be clear, AJA's QA department performed testing with a Sony PMW-F3 after you reported your experience (since we do not currently have a Sony F35 on hand for testing); the Sony PMW-F3 worked in all formats tested (which are comparable to the Sony F35 - single link, dual link and dual link high frame rate outputs.) Since video inputs to the Ki Pro Quad, other than your Sony F35 seem to interact as expected, something about the output of the Sony F35 would seem to be the issue. We would like to help determine what that issue is.

Also, my apologies to others on this forum for my interruption of your other discussions.

Thanks!

Macgregor,
We have been trying to source a Sony F35 for testing. Unfortunately, many of the rental houses we work with appear to no longer have an F35; many have been sold to end users like yourself. I am back in the office today so I will look into this matter further with the QA department.

Thanks,

Hi Jon, what about getting a F35 from one of the LA based owners? would that work?

Macgregor,
I am working on obtaining a Sony F35 with Interface box as a rental from one of the rental facilities in Los Angeles.

Thanks,
