Just got a new camera - Sony F35

What stop do you generally aim for MAC?

I've noticed with the F35 much more than my previous camera that you can really see the defects in lenses. I thought my standards were sharp at T2.1, then I saw some footage at T4.0 - blew me away!

My goal is f2.8 for close ups and at least 4 or 5.6 for wider shots.

Lovely looking stuff--F35 for guerilla stuff is friggin' brilliant! I just shot a bunch of stuff F35 A-cam and F35 B cam. The SLOG is different--I find the F35 stuff more pleasing.

That is one cinematic interview. Very interesting subject too. Awesome :-)

BTW I'm new here so thought I'd introduce myself - I'm Barrett and I had an MFT Blackmagic on order but saw the footage Miguel posted from the F35 and decided it was time to own my dream camera, and now I do! Never really been much of a forum poster but since this camera has such a unique look and this is such a small community based around it I really like the vibe. Many thanks to those of you who have posted your experiences and footages so far, wouldn't have taken the plunge otherwise. I'll try to do the same.

I don't have any PL lenses because I'm a noob so I'm going to have Jacek convert it to a Nikon ProLock. I did test it with the Gemini with its supplied (tiiiiny) SDI cables and the footage didn't look messed up in any way, very clean. But I don't really know what to look for as far as anomalies with it. What I do know, is that the grain pattern is as organic as I've ever seen on digital.

Very exciting times!

Congrats, Barrett- and welcome to the merry band.

My F35 arrived today. I took the L handle, bottom plate and extra viewfinder mount off to streamline it and spare the extra weight. With that stuff removed it's not as heavy or bulky as I had imagined.
I modded my v-lock Lanparte shoulder base plate to fit on the bottom (same as Miguel's), threw a lens on it and some handles. Testing it out on the shoulder feels solid. Really settled and smooth compared to the smaller cams I've been using til now. I'm glad I spent a little bit more to get one with the Sony viewfinder.

Came with extra power cables, too. They are the 8-pin deals . I got two 8-pin M/F cables that plug directly into the camera power port (not the IF box), and I also got two 4 pin XLR power M to 8 pin F. All the cables are about 3 feet each. I don't imagine I'll use them all. I recall some folks were looking for some power cables that would go right into the camera. I have no idea if these would be anything anybody's interested in. But IM me if these pique your interest.

I'm seriously thinking about Jacek's Nikon mod, too. I've got the E. German PL glass. They look nice. Not the sharpest lenses on planet Earth, but they're not sloppy by any stretch. They feel vintage-y. Plays nice with the F35's image. Ergonomics on these are actually really good- super long focus throws. But, they're kinda slow (f4 and f3.5). I can already see I'm gonna need speedier glass (like the Nikon glass I already own). I do like the idea of affordable, fast zooms on this beastie. Makes set-ups go a lot faster. I'll have to hunt down an extra front plate somewhere down the line so that I have a stock PL mount for when I need/want it.
And that's the only thing that is giving me pause on pulling the trigger on the Nikon mount mod -- the prospect of finding that extra stock front plate. I'm wondering if that's not setting myself up for a bad time down the road.

Thoughts?

I just got my F35 PL to Nikon mount back from Tink at camera platform, and he was able to do the conversion without destroying the PL mount beyond the point of return. He gave me the good news that we could go back to PL at any stage if I wanted.
but it's not as good a solution as an extra plate, as I probably can't do the revert back to PL without sending it to Tink again (maybe I could if I was brave enough?). But it can be swopped out the way he has done it.
i now have both aperture control and lens release system for my Nikon mount :) cost me $1000 tho.

Hey Mac,

What do u think of the rokinons? In particular the 24mm.

Cheers,

For the price they sell, they'r the best cine lenses ever.
The 85 is superb, the 35 excellent and the 24 is the worse, but worse compared to the other 2 which are excellent. I'd rather take these than the Compact primes, regarding image quality, any day. And having a matching T stop for all lenses is great.
The only downside so far is that the minimum focus distance on the 85mm could be a little shorter. That close up of the old man with the 85mm was literally as close as I could get to him before losing focus.

Hey MAC for your list I'm near Stansted Airport in the UK.

Welcome Barrett to the happy family.

Keith I might be interested in those cables of yours, can you PM me?

Hi All,

Thought I would post a little bit of footage. I don't really have much that I'm allowed to post up, but this may be of interest. This is from a bit of teaching I did recently, so please ignore the sloppy camerawork. Also, it's framed for 2.40 so ignore the composition!

I did this to demonstrate a lighting setup for when your back is against the wall - in this case a single desk lamp with (I think) a 40w tungsten bulb in it illuminates the whole scene. A light meter reading from of the subject's face didn't even come out - it read Eu. The lens was one of my Zeiss standards, 32mm which I stopped down to T2.8 just to make life more difficult.

The camera was in CINE-EI mode, tungsten balance and this shot is ungraded here. Sadly the web compression makes the grain look horrid and blocky, but it really isn't. Anyway, enjoy.

Damn, I have a dead RED pixel! in bottom right quarter.
Any ideas on how to feel better about this? Can it be remedied?
Just started tests so no footage to show just yet.

Very easy fix- put PL lens cap on- push the black balance switch- wait for it to complete- should be gone then. If not try it again. Mac suggested a black balance once per shoot day. Ive seen a few dead pixels pop up and this wipes them clean for me.

You must black balance at the top of every day, and if your temperature changes significantly.

One thing I notice with people moving from the TV or amateur world into cinematography is they always white balance, never black balance. I'm the opposite.

A black balance also does a dead pixel check, but you may find it takes several goes for it to take effect. Ideally get the camera warm first before you do it.

JM
