I've had my F35 torn apart more times than I care to admit. There is *some* extra space in that housing, but not a lot. A re-house kit would be spiffy, I'm just not sure if the return on investment would justify the expense. I think to get real space savings in the F35 you'd have to relocate some serious electronics, which means by nature any re-house wouldn't be a DIY kind of project like the Element F3 kit is.
But just thinking about it, you could save some weight/space by making the top mount a dummy wall. It's redundant anyhow. Taking the electronics out for the top would allow you to reduce the height a little bit and squeeze the top of the cam down a smidge to meet the top of the e-boards. Doing that you'd probably lose the top VF output on the camera front, but there's a lower VF output as well so no loss there. Overall you could probably make the thing about 6-10cm shorter. If you made it longer and housed the IF guts and an SSD recorder inside it would no doubt balance a bit better.
Not a bad idea, I'm forever getting asked by people to show them stuff I shot with it but I can't show a lot of my most recent stuff due to NDAs, copyrights, etc....
some interesting ebay items : Did anyone else get there camera from the ebay seller AC-9? This is who I bought mine through, they seem to be selling quite a few and close to the market value.
holy moly the F65 is coming down fast in price. I wonder if in a year or so this sub forum will become the 35/65 as the 3/5/55 have stayed together. The rotary shutter is an add on option it appears? does the F65 without mechanical shutter have a global shutter at the chip level like the F35? Or are there F65's out there that lack a global shutter of any kind.
Sony's solution for achieving a "global shutter" on the F65 WAS the rotary shutter option. Bit cheeky, but I believe the F55 was the first CMOS camera with a natively global shutter. The F65 was offered without the rotary shutter (F65) and with it (F65/RS). According to top teks "literally no-one bought the camera without the option, so Sony basically discontinued the vanilla version"
Wow, that's cheap! In a year or two it might be down at F35 levels... I never was too impressed with the image of it though. I feel Sony really only hit the mark once, probably because of Panavision's influence.
I'm sure certain wide shots could be more spectacular with the F65 8K, and high speed. I feel like the F65 and 35 could compliment each other on a lot of projects. Christopher Nolan mixes anamorphic 35 with IMAX and VistaVision for great effect. Using the F65 for the big wides, slow motion action and the F35 for the intimate story telling of human faces and how it paints could be a great combo. The F65 is not the ultimate 4K F35 we might hope for, that would be a CCD camera with F65 specs. If you have ever seen any Ikonoskop footage, it really is uncanny how it replicates 16mm and when I saw the F35 I felt that same connection to film. The analog nature of the CCD is what creates the digital film and there must be some very pricey engineering reason that 4k CCD's are not an option right now. CMOS technology is not filmic but it has something that's a lot more important to the majority of the buying market: Low Light Sensitivity. The big measure of any camera today seems to be 4k capable output and being able to see down inside a dark sewer in the middle of the night with a 5.6 lens. A 4k CCD is probably a long way off because there is no large buying market that realizes that a CCD is capable of creating more artistic organic images and asking for it. Everyone wants resolution and super gain.
Good to know that the F65's going around will most likely all have the shutter. Almost should be called a F6.
A couple friends and I shot a no-budget short film this past weekend on the F35, here are a few preliminary stills; I'll be sure to get the vimeo link to the F35 channel once it's all edited and audio'd up:
I used Miguel's Cineon LUT (many thanks by the way!) as input and Resolve 10's Fujifilm D65 LUT as output to give the daytime shots a cool-ish look along with some other tweaks.
Nice! That night exterior with the smoking looks great!- also the beach scene has a really interesting color palate- almost looks like shooting tungsten film in daylight.
Thanks guys! I was considering getting some diffusion filters to bloom out the windows but I just put the not-so-great Sigma 20mm 1.8 on there and it did the trick
The wide night shot is the same 20mm and the smoking shot is a Nikkor 50mm 1.2, we stuck to those two for almost everything.
That's a keen observation Hunter, I actually shot a couple tungsten clips outdoors late in the shoot accidentally and decided it worked really well for the mood so just graded the rest of them to match the best I could. Think I'm gonna tone down the grain on the day shots though, looks a little much after stepping back. It's funny, I can't decide if I like film grain or the F35's grain better, they both look so cool. Love this camera
