Just got a new camera - Sony F35

In reading all of the posts in this thread, i do not recall reading anything about what is supposed to happen when you press the record button on the side.

I am assuming that without a cinealta recorder attached that it will not do anything?

Looking into unifying the recording process a bit. Would be great to have one trigger and a way to see that recording is in progress via the EVF. Currently, at least until i get a LANC cable, i reach back to the AJA and watch time code run and then start operating. The AJA can send an overlay out to show recording and time code, but it is terribly ugly and takes up too much screen teal estate making composing difficult. Horrible oversight by AJA. Just awful!

Viewing the video through the recorder is possibly the only way to get record confirmation. This causes a slight delay in the video signal when operating. Not anything as bad as some hdmi feeds. It would be great to have a way to see recording confirmation in the Sony EVF feed somehow. I don’t expect miracles, but wondering if any of you have had luck.

I have a few hdsdi cables, but i bought them all under the idea of monitoring, but when it comes to recording, not i am noticing imperfections.

I really like my cinecoil hd-sdi, but i cannot find them online at the moment. Stores in LA have started using the far inferior wooden camera bnc coiled cable that i bought once, the cable died the first day! Never again! And then i have a couple cables that have been ok, but with the short one i have, i am noticing it is fairly sensitive and i have to get right a right angle cable so that i don’t bump the cable when handheld. Causes the recorder to stop because it senses a “frame rate change”. So, just wondering what your solutions are?

I don't have an F35, but pretty much all of my SDI cables are Canare with the "fat" Canare connectors. Markertek builds all of mine. I've only had a handful(2 maybe 3) of BNC cables that were mine, go bad in my career and only one was Canare. Most of the time, it seems like it's an issue with the connection on the camera side. The BNC connectors really take a lot of abuse. Lots of stress and torque from the cables that we don't think about. Especially if heavier gauge cable is used.
 
Viddovation did some work with this. Custom project. Main issue is that the F35 does not generate TC or trigger record by itself. Only docked recorders supported SRW-1 and Codex could read the signal and sent the record on off trigger. not even the SR-R1 because it couldn’t be docked via the IF BOX connector.There is a long post about it. Just search for trigger record button Sony F35 and it will pop. My idea was to get an old SRW-1 and grab the board that triggers rec and then jimmy it in the F35 but it’s a big project and not really with it to me time wise... however if you do come up with something... please share it.... please!?

The record button on the side doesn't do anything unless the SRW-1 or Codex is mounted on the camera, maybe it would if the SRW-1 was attached using the fiber optic module. You can trigger record the F35 and get it into record mode with viewfinder notifications, tally lights and quiet fans. You use the remote port on the side and have to change some setting in the camera, it also send a record trigger signal in the SDI stream but as I understand in none of the modern recorders like the odyssey cannot detect it.

I had considered trying to make a cable that had a single switch that branched out to 2 cables 1 for the odyssey and the other to the F35 and trigger both at the same time. The issue with that of course is you won't know for sure looking in the viewfinder if the odyssey actually triggered. I also considered trying to trigger from the odyssey and use the voltage from the led tally on the trigger to switch a relay that would then trigger the F35. The F35 needs to use a toggle type trigger to trigger record mode without a docked recorder not a momenty switch like most triggers are, I attempted it with what I could get locally but I was not able to find a relay that could switch on the very low current coming from the LED.

Very good to know. Thank you.

I’ll see if aja has a way to change the super when recording to something less obtrusive. The delay in their output is minimal. And i am accustomed to the delay in most cameras today. So if i go through the AJA i have record confirm to the evf when shooting shoulder, plus the aja accepts LANC from the hand grip, so it could turn out to be a sweet setup if, and biiiig if, the AJA super can be altered.

If nothing else, the trigger remote could be a great “quiet mode” trigger. Leaving the fans blasting when shooting outdoors b roll and then triggering the record to quiet down the fans. May also be a programmable user button for fan speed as well. But my fans are currently stuck in MAX for now. Till i can figure something out.

James, did you manage to do a camera reset? One thing you may want to try is load the latest firmware in a Memory stick and update the camera. That may clear the fan issue if it’s a software glitch.

Only difference we saw on set was that the Odyssey did not display the full range on the Waveform Monitor, but the PiX E5 did.

After downloading your original file, to me there is a little more detail in all the configurations with the Odyssey vs the PIX. Look at his necklace, and the words on the color chart. It could be a focus issue but I'm not sure. Anyone else see this? Maybe it is just a focus change. Please confirm that quality is parallel between the 2 recorders.

Also, has anyone tested with the Shogun Inferno? I'm guessing it would require the AJA box for 444 and 50p. I've heard speculation but I haven't found any real tests with it.


I'm looking at getting an F35 and studied this carefully, as I'm calculating the costs of all the peripherals required to make the package work.
 
Well spotted. The test was not entirely scientific, but we used peaking for focus. I think that the Odyssey is indeed capturing more detail. Maybe something is lost in the AJA 3GM box conversion... Hadn't noticed. Will try to do another one just to check focus and detail. Shooting straight at a color chart.
 
I have shot these tests. No Odyssey 7Q, but I think they show more sharpness. Shot in CineEI base ISO. What was strange to me, was that the PIX was softer both in 422 and 444... so again, since the camera was probably slightly shifted and focus adjusted quickly, we may have missed it. I shot these tests at f8, to avoid any lens softness creeping in and other artifacts. Tungsten fresnel blasting the chart.

Here is the video, and link to original files. No sharpening. Just using Resolve 15 ACES conversion from slog to SRGB and sgamut to rec709

Share your thoughts... and yes... I need to borrow a 7Q but none around at this time.

This is exciting. I have two already, otherwise i’d jump on it! One of the most difficult things with any camera is having a complete system that is ready to go. Great setup!

Thanks, James! I spent almost two months building out this package. It was a really fun time researching and getting the setup up to these forums standards. Amazing resources here.

Let me know if you ever need 3! Haha :p
