Just for fun - My Folgers Jingle

I found this jingle contest for Folgers coffee. They want people to come up with an original jingle that ends with the familiar "The best part of wakin' up is Folgers in your cup" line. They also want you to make a video of yourself performing it. So I did that, and I have entered my video. In a month they will pick the top 10 entrees, and at that point the public will vote for their favorite jingle. That will hone it down to the top 5. All 5 go to New York to perform their jingles, and win $5,000.00 if they make 2nd through 5th place. The winner gets $25,000.00 and may appear in a commercial.

I figure that's more than I make in a year, and video business is slow right now, so why not go for it? That prize would relieve some stress, and it's really fun to make jingles too. Below is a link to my YouTube video of the jingle. I hope you enjoy it! And I hope I can make it to the end with your help. I'll write again if I make the top 10. There is like a month long window to vote, so it won't be a rush or anything.

Enjoy! And just by playing my video, it makes it appear higher in searches on YouTube, which in turn makes it available for more to see. So if you play my video a few times, it will help me out right now. Thanks!

Shot with a T2i for the performance stuff, and an EX1 for anything with Folgers in it. Rode NT2000 mic on vocals & guitar.

This sounds best at 720P or above!

I love coffee, but I roast my own so Folgers isn't high on my list. But really nice work. Having worked on a boat load of national ads your certainly there quality wise. Now if the starched shirts like it...

As much as I do not like the taste of Folgers, this was great. Do I hear a little (or not so little) BNL influence?

Thanks guys. The video isn't up for judging. Nobodies video will end up being played on TV, and I don't even thing the jingle will be used. They just will MAYBE put the grand pride winner in an ad. That could be doing anything. And I heard the lady who's judging say "I'm looking for a good sounding jingle of course, but I also want you to look like a star" so that says they want a good looking person to win regardless if their jingle is the best.

And no I don't drink Folgers! I drink a very nice "San Francisco Bay" brand of dark roast from Costco. LOL

C2V, I have heard the BNL comparison before, but not because they influenced me. I was doing 90's alt rock years before they ever came out. I was in a hippy jam band from 1989 - 1997 touring around, and opening shows with the likes of Phish & Blues Traveler. Touring from Humboldt proved to be too much and the band disbanded... For the heck of it, here is a sample of old Chad, looking thin, playing lead and singing along with my other singer/songwriter band mates. Can you pick me out from this ancient video?

My songs are the ones at the start of this vid, and the one that starts around 9:00. We has a variety of sounds with 3 singer songwriters.

Dude. Nice jingle. Good luck. I hope you make the top 10 so we can all vote for you!

A few years back Dorito's had a contest called "crash the superbowl". Some guys approached me to do the sound for it, and I did. Same kinda thing. People voted for it, and the winner aired on the superbowl. We didn't win that year, but the dorito's people liked it enough to actually pay for it to air the next year. We were totally shocked when we saw it, because they didn't tell us. All I did was some basic music editing and a few sound effects at the end.

Dude Dave! That was cool. Too bad you probably didn't get paid for the national ad version huh?

But you do give me hope too, so thanks.

Great song man, I was dating a girl in the late 90's that was in to the Grateful Dead. So I went to a show in Hartford with her. At the end of the show, she jumped in a purple bus and took off to follow the band around the country. Needless to say I was shocked, But hey, to each is there own. I drove home laughing my ass off at the whole scene. It was bizzare. But fun.

Chad I like your use of multi screens and the sentiment behind the song, it would be great if coffee could be a peacemaker!

David, thanks for the laugh on that doritos spot!

There's no shame in entering these contests. I think they level the playing field a little bit.

Your jingle is strong. You've got radio friendly pipes, that's for sure. I could hear this commercial coming on the radio, without a doubt. My only critique would be its length. In commercial contest submissions, I always feel like you have a stronger piece when it conforms to 30 or 60 second lengths. But that's minor. Your submission is a contender.

Easter Hill sounded good too. I haven't seen people do that "dance" in a long time.

I only got paid $200 to do the work when I originally did it, but nothing after that. Honestly, it was about an hour's worth of work, so not too bad.

I think your jingle is cool. I'm sure you'll make the finals, and then we can all vote for you. $25K is a pretty good prize. I pulling for you, man.

Hi Sam. The jingle needed to be between 60 - 90 seconds. I has a version without the long drum intro, but was a few BPM faster, trying to get it to 60 sec exactly, just in case they wanted to use it for something real, but it was too fast. I added the drum stuff so I would have time for a coffee making sequence. I don't think they are looking for a real jungle to use. I think the contest is just promotion enough. Then they judge the top 5 a la American Idol, where they judge your jingle, performance, originality, and how much you look like a star. I do not appreciate that they want you to look a certain way, because I'm not a 20 yr old kid any more. It's an effing jingle contest for crying out loud. Bit hey if I make the top 5 I will have earned 5 grand for my trouble, so that would be cool. Anyway I could probably rework this to a 60 with some creative arranging, or a 30 by cutting the first half. I am used to making exactly 60 or 30 sec jingles when I have to.

I have a jingle playlist here: http://www.youtube.com/ChadWork1#p/c/599A9633910FAB4C

Thanks for the kind words everyone. If I make the top 10 I'll be begging for votes for sure!
