Just finished another 11 days shooting with the AF101

thanks RieniO and Pulp.

I recall a time when flew a Canon 7D on Glidecam and had to pull my own focus following the talent across three rooms till they sat down into a couch. Was able to do it but was a challenge.

Isn't there a wireless servo that can be hooked up to do no touch focus ?

When working with talent you can do multiple takes. I've been working like that for a year as well. But you shouldn't make things impossible for yourself by shooting ENG with a large sensor. Because when you shoot a news event no viewer will care about shallow focus unless the subject isn't in focus and you'll regret not having used a small sensor cam. I bought a HMC151 especially for this kind of work even though I haven't opened the box yet. The GH2 with its cropped sensor function may be interesting for you as well.

Just the rolling shutter alone which is almost twice as fast as the 7D seems to get overlooked a lot. It's on par with the Red One. That's significant. You can do SO MUCH more with dynamic shots with the AF100. Yet, many people don't even include that in the value. That's pretty significant to me, and I *know* that is not inexpensive to do.

Do you mind explaining that in plain idiot English, please? What's a rolling shutter? On par with RED One? Does that mean - the AF can mimic Red One footage??? I googled rolling shutter and got some negatives at wiki, but you're portraying this as positive on the AF? Please, do explain. Are all the negatives negated by the speed of this AF rolling shutter?

I think I understand a bit better now. So the rolling shutter on the AF is so fast it's almost a global shutter?

This thread has been re-assuring in nudging my decision to acquire the AF100.

The type of camera work am doing ranges from run and gun ENG style to live concerts, sports, movie shorts etc.. Was originally considering the Sony EX1R but you all are presenting a darn compelling case for the AF100.

My only concern is how manageable (follow focus etc.) is this camera if used on a Glidecam / Stedicam platform which is my particular specialty ?

I had the same thought processes before I purchased my AF101, I used to shoot News with a Z1 but I never used the zoom rocker, I found it to be too crude I rather preferred the zoom ring control on the lens itself it gave me much more control on my zooms so the absence of a zoom servo on the AF101 was not an issue for me on that type of shoot.
But i also have considered steadicam work and other bizarre application, you know the AF101 has a face detect feature i have been out shooting with it as an experiment, it does a reasonable job of keeping your talents face(s) in focus even if they turn and it drops out it will re acquire fairly quickly. So with this feature on you could walk with your talent keeping their face(s) in focus.
My only request perhaps in future firmware updates could the auto iris be smoothed out or the ability to use face tracker with focus only.
