Yo,

Just bought a brand new DVX with a Libec tripod, just curious as to what the best accessories would be to pimp it up with? I'll need a case and a mic most definitely, gonna try score some of this stuff as Christmas presents, any ideas for what other stuff would be must-have?

Cheers.

First, we need to know what are you mainly using it for? Weddings? Docus? Features? Corporate video/TV commercials?

It would help us determine what accessory you should have.

consider this first then work from here;

a; extra batteries
b; wide angle adapter
c; filters ( polarizer, neutral density, gradients )
d: a good tripod with a good and reputable fluid head.

I'm no sound guru cleavage so get someone to recommend good mics.

Hope this helps.

I use my DVX for about the same purpose you are, except for the short films. We could compare notes on other topics.

Hi Teddybear.
Do you mean a wide angle adapter and a wide angle lens.
Is a polarizer filter the same as a diffusion filter and is it used primarily to cut sunlight?
There is an ND on the camera.

I meant a wide angle lens adapter that you can attach to the front of the DVX. While the dvx is already wide compared with other camcorders, its not wide enough for 'dramatic' shots and shooting in close quarters.

A polarizer is a filter that you will use to cut reflections. Uses are; removing or minimizing the reflection from eyeglasses, windshields etc. It will also enhance the blue in the sky and the color of the sea or pools.

The neutral density that i suggest is the graduated type. This is for troubleshooting a tricky situation such as with an overcast sky and you want to balance the exposure.

I would suggest the century optics .6 It bows things just a bit, but it will really give you a lot of flexibility in tight quarters during real-world shoots in real-world spaces.

A good shoulder mount is nice as well and a mattebox can come in handy

Plus matteboxes just make the camera look really impressive. I have the Formatt F-500 and for the money it's very nice.

As to sound, for a compete system in my humble opinion you just can't beat an AT 4073a for exteriors and a Oktava 012 for interiors. The best, RELIABLE place for the Oktava at about $200 is www.sound-room.com. There are Chinese imitations out there and Sound Room is used by alot of us who need the real thing. The AT can be picked up anywhere for about $550. The others in Audio will have some great direction for you that goes deeply into the whys of this selection so I'll just tell you it it's a great base for everything I do which includes television and corporate. You'll probably want to add a mixer to it and an SD 302 is a reasonably priced, initial professional unit that can handle your work. Going from direct-to-camera to mic-to-mixer-to camera will make a world of difference and I can't over state enough the importance of quality sound. SO many people put all their work into getting great footage and editing the story and then forget about audio. As more and more people come to decide to get into video production, a great sound package will really give you an edge. But you'll need to know about sound first so I'd recommend a good litany on sound from Jay Rose called "Producing Great Sound for Digital Video" Second Edition. Amazon has it and it's simple writing style will give you everyting you need to start separating your work from the others.

Here is my setup.

You have to decide if you want to make good videos or pimp your DVX, they are NOT the same. Mattebox great for pimping, of limited value relative to other things like good mics. I have yet to wish I had a wider angle lens, DVX goes pretty wide compared to other cams anyway. More often, I wish I had longer telephoto.
