Just bought a JVC100 - here's why

I posted an answer to your question before but I didn't see it poseted here. So here goes again.

The short answer is yes, we considered all of the others including the HVX. For us, there were a number of determining factors. We shoot for television exclusively so the transition from SD to HD can occur via HDV. The two cable and one network we have deals with go from bird to the home at 19/20 Mbs so even if we shoot and archive and edit in true 100 Mbs, we're still delivering at 20 Mbs for the broadcasters and they're still delivering to the home at 19/20 MBS. So we can put three times the number of cameras in the field and drastically reduce our expenditure in editing and other post systems right now until true HD is in demand.

As for the HVX, it's no doubt a great camera but the storage and worklflow issues with the cards, the fact that they're having extreme issues with the 8 Gig cards and Focus and CitiDick are also having their own issues, the HVX simnply isn't ready for prime time as far as we're concerned and the Sony was simply too far off the mark for our needs as well.

My suggestion is to look carefully at what you're particular prodiction needs are, listen to the very knowlegable and learned people on this and other Boards like Rush and Barry and then mnake the decision based on your real-world needs.

We're extremely fortunate. I'm a producer and executive producer who has a great team of camera and sound people working with me. In the end, it's my money and my rear end on the line accountable to three networks to provide them with exactly what they need and buit the real talent lies with my team and as they or any of the people I've used from this Board like Jun Tang or Mike Pellagatti at Wildvisions will tell you, I listen to my guys when it comes to what they would prefer to work with. If I want the results I and the networks expect, I remind myself that I'm just the ringmaster. The real talent is in the rings with camera and sound guys. Mike, Barry, Rush and people like that, they've forgoitten more than I'll ever know. But after listening to them and evaluationg all the information I had, when I committed $200k to new equipment, in the end, for video, it was JVC for us. For you, it may be something different.

Listen all you can to people like Rush and Barry on these Boards, consider your own needs, read all you can, see what other filmmakers like Andrew Young who's show at the Director's Guild last night was, from a technical and results standpoint, amazing and then make your decision. There's little difference between me who's committing to 5 JVCs for my team and you who's committing to one camera for your own professional use. In the end, it's the results that your audience is expecting that counts. No one sitting in the seats is going to say, "Hey, that JVC looks great but I'da used an HVX". They shouldn't notice anything but the feelings you wanted to evoke in them when they're leaving the theatre or heading to the fridge for a beer before the next "Lost" episode comes on. Do that and you know you picked the right camera.

Thanks j, for all the recommendations. I appreciate you addressing everyone's questions so accurately and concisely. :)

Yes we do have 18 JVC cameras now in stock, just came in this AM. We shipped 5 already today, due to the new special offers. They come with a coupon, and when you register this coupon, you get a free $900 kit with VL2 charger, V-mount E7S battery, and NVA V-mount adapter for the camera, all shipped from JVC. I wasn't in the office today, but I did check my email and there was no news bulletin on new pricing from JVC. I will check again tomorrow and post it.

Rush, please let us know if you heard about any new les package too. Can you probe at all?

Not to answer for Rush but I heard from Randy today about the offer and it stands as JVC finally called EVS today abd said that the package was to include a 13XWide Angle lens with the standard 16X and camera body. Now, as I posted somewhere else, my math's "not none two gud" but $5000 for the deal now or $5600 after Feb 1 plus $12,999 (as quoted by the JVC people at the DGA) equals $18k for the threesome. With Randy telling me the final price will be somewhere around $10,000, either JVC's putting a lesser 13X in the package, they're taking an $8000 hit or the profit margins for them are incredible. Rush probably has the whole story but that's as far as I know as of late this afternoon.

Thanks Rush

Thanks Rush

Thanks again for all your help, and I'll let everyone know how the newest edition of the JVC100 performs soon....

hey guys, this maybe redundant, but where is a good forum site or otherwise where one can download the jvc footage, I've seen none yet, and even though I could only dream of hvx for like a year it seems, the jvc more and more is seeming to shine. if i do a google search, nothing seems to pop us. Cheers

There is quite a bit on here. Look for posts by "stephenlnoe" & "dashwood." They are pretty clued up on the HD100.

Well there's a post two threads below this one called "New HD100 footage"...what am I chopped liver <g>.

Anyway, I literally just dropped them into the timeline to check the FCP workflow after getting back from the shoot at the Olympic Center.

THere are a couple of stills as well.

After getting a few minutes to do a little CC work, you really should see the results.
THe h.264 clips I put up are fairly faat by comparison and no where near as good as it looks full res on any of our HD monitors.

The new graded clip "getting ready" that I'll post this afternoon looks amazing

Hi jlames, it was a pleasure chatting with you on Friday. Thanks for everything! :) I checked my inbox right after you hopped in your car, and sure enough found a dealer bulletin dated 2/3/06 from JVC with the new package. I don't see the huge savings discussed. List price was indeed $18K, and projected MAP $15K or so... I was also hoping for a better deal.

Some of my customers are simply thinking of picking up the 1/3-1/2 converter and getting used lenses from GY-DV5000 owners, or the 1/3-2/3 converter and getting used Canon lenses from Sony DXC-series cameras. That will still be cheaper than that lens, even if not true HD.

You're welcome John, my pleasure sir. Please do let us know. :)

That figures, Rush. Like we discussed in your office Friday. The only thing that counts is the price when it gets to you and then us. No wonder the 5-minute soft shoe shuffle JVC did at the DGA on Monday relative to price in response to my questions. Anyway, yesterday we used the .8 Fujinon wide angle adapter (WCV-82SC) Randy got me and I have to tell you, it's a very good solution. Straight, clear, good parallells, zoom thru...it actually corrected for the rather narrow stock field of the standard Fujinion that comes with the JVC. And the IDX batteries, see the post elsewhere on this. We were really pleased with their performance. See you Tuesday to pick up the last JVC and good talking to you Friday as well, my friend.
Jonathan

Forgot. I'll be using the 1/3 - 2/3 converter w/ Sony DXC-series lenses in Scottsdale later next week and let you know how they work in HD. One of my line producers lives out there and uses/used the DXCs alot on his Nat. Geo., OLN and History Channel shoots.

Everyone's focusing on the image, but what about sound? Isn't PCM (HVX200) superior to MPEG-2 (JVC)?

Depends on what you mean by superior. I think it records quite nicely. Now, the reality is I shoot narritive film, where almost all the dialouge is over dubed in post anyway. Reality is, I would use the camera even if it didn't record sound at all - I just don't think sound recording is any video camera's real selling point (imho).

But that said, I would not hesitate to record a dialouge scene w/ the camera (assuming I had good mikes, mixer, etc.).

The 2 xlr ports seem well made and can handle phathom powered mics - a nice plus.

The camera records BOTH Mpeg audio and PCM simultaneously to the tape and the sound floor on the Pre-amp is around -70db. That's very good sound.

Am I assuming correctly that all of this discussion is about the JVC GY-HD100U? I only hear you referencing a JVC100...and I don't seem to be able to find such a camera online.

I was wondering about this. In the HD100U manual, it talks about PCM but doesn't tell you how to know which you are recording or listening to. Mpeg or PCM. I also noticed JVC metioned that they would be updating this in the future to include PCM (4 Channels?).

Can you elaborate on this?
