Just Another Rock Video

Hey everyone .. been a while since I posted anything so heres my latest MV.
 Shot at 24P normal ...
            DVX100 not a (no special lenses )
2 hour shoot at a junkyard
3 hour shoot on a set built in my backyard
            Tons of pre-production
Edited and color corrected on FCHD plus a little bit of AE6

Sorry about the crappy compression  I really need to get cleaner or something.

I guess I should say that with the limited time we had to shoot,  I really tried to focus more on the story than the cinematography itself,  it really turned out to be a run and gun type of production, which I hate but what can you do.   CONSTRUCTIVE criticism is more than welcome !

the band is local named - this face down
song name - wrecking ball
Oh yeah the link ...

Re: Just Another Rock Video

Okay, here's my 2 cents.

I thought it looked really good and the girl and robot idea was pretty cool. You are locked into a genre that can't develop cool concepts so it was a shame there wasn't more about that part...but I understand why.

I liked the overall look. Some of the framing on the singer was off. I'm not a big fan of excessive headroom above the subject and that was the case in a few shots, plus, his head was out of the shot a few times like you were trying to keep up with him but I guess that added to the energy level of the video.

I really enjoyed it and the song wasn't half bad either.

Good job.

Re: Just Another Rock Video

Thanks Disjecta,
I agree with the excessive headroom shots ... my problem was that I already had an excessive amount of ECU's and I was trying to change it up a little. When you were speaking of genres are you referring to rock music in general? By the way nice final edit on the park piece ... what editing software do you use?

Thanks again - ;D CAVEMAN

Re: Just Another Rock Video

I'm talking about music videos in general. You are dealing with a very limited amount of time to tell a story and then you have to include the band performing in the midst of that. It's quite a challenge.

I edit on Premiere Pro 1.5, some color work is done in After Effects 6.5...thanks for the kudos :)

Re: Just Another Rock Video

Those guys were harmonizing... how... refreshing!

I liked the video. Some of the composition was a little rough, like the excessive headroom issue, but overall, I'd watch it on TV for sure.

Next video, I'd say really make sure you try to deliver as much eye candy as you can. You have the editing and the narrative down.

Re: Just Another Rock Video

I liked it. It turned out better than I though it would after the first couple of shots. In addtion to other's constuctive criticisms which I agree with, I'd offer up the suggestion of changing your second shot of the girl. For half the shot you are zoomed in close, then the last half you're zooming out. I'd say use one half of it or the other. To have that long of a zoom and it not be zooming for the whole shot is kind of distracting. Maybe use the same shot but do a cut in the middle when the zoom starts, so it'd be a cut to the zoom, same shot but make it seem like it's not continuous. Kind of nitpicky but when I saw it it made me think amatuerish, although rest of the video did not (and is not).

Good effort. I also liked the washed out look, it fit the video.

Re: Just Another Rock Video

Great production desing, nice concept, and very well executed. The open framing and the usual "not so great" compositions didn't drag it down. For me it was still great. I would loose the glowing heart effect. I think it stands out because the video is so much duller visually and because it's not actually very well done, if I may say. I loved the video, very nice concept and nicely shot. Good work!

Re: Just Another Rock Video

Reminds me of a Tool Video. Loved the song, and the premise for it. Wish you had the time to bring more to the "man" she creates. More shots of him with more movement would up the production value a lot. I suggest, if you get a chance to work with these guys again, make sure you have more time for production, so that you have as much stuff to chose from as possible, and can fully bring your vision to life. A polished version of this would be broadcast quality(not that this isn't per say). I agree with losing the glowing heart. We understand as viewers what it's role is without that blatant of an explaination. Maybe mute it's color a little. I'd personally lose the shot of the lead singer playing the piano. To me it doesn't fit the mood. Would rather keep the piano notes as haunting rather than say this guy plays piano. Only other thing that stood out was the first dolly shot. I'd have liked it better if her face was kept in frame when she sat up. But as a whole, I liked it a lot. Hope to see more videos from you, and though it may be hard, try to get more time for principal photography. I know how f***ing tough it as as indies, but in my eyes this would have been a slamdunk(sorry for the weak reference) of a video if the elements in it were exposed to their full potential.

Re: Just Another Rock Video

I was just going to say......this is very Tool inspired....the video and the song.....almost too much haha.....
when you peek through the wooden boards....we can see the shadow....I don't know if it was intentional or not.
Color seemed flat at times, and contrast seemed low....
Great song, but the robot concept seemed kinda rushed going into it....
And the piano undertone, like said above...that provided a very filmic feel to the song and video which makes it cohesive.
Theres only one shot of the singer playing the keys, and in all honesty, I thought it was really cheesy him rocking out on his keyboard to this type of song.
It would be cool if it was on a piano with him alone playing....or even if you ditched that shot altogether.
I was looking for some close ups of the girl showing her feelings a bit more....
Overall I loved the execution...

Re: Just Another Rock Video

Thank you all for for your suggestions and compliments and for taking the time to critique.  These are the criticisms that I long for and why I appreciate this forum so much. Having no "formal" schooling I often question my work (maybe too much).  I agree with most everybodies comments. As far as the TOOL influence I really think it's more the song than anything else, I just tried to make a video that fit the shoe.  A funny thing about shooting at the junkyard was that the owner said we could have it from 4pm to 7pm but in the area we were doing most of the shooting they were working until 5 or 5:30 and when I say working I mean smashing cars with bulldozers about 15 feet behind us. OH and they were draining all the liquids into a large pond of gas, oil, and coolant ... the fumes were god awful. It was pretty distracting and also inhibited alot of wider shots.  While I had the story very planned out and storyboarded I wasn't sure where I was going to cut to the performance stuff.  There were alot better shots of the band but they just weren't in the right places.   I know that Dolly shot drives me NUTS we took like 6 or 7 takes and I was using a 1 ft sq. piece of plywood on casters I had to choose the smoothest shot over her staying in frame. Well enough making excuses this was my second video and I learned ALOT.
Thank you all again. I really appreciate the suggestions and the time taken to make them.  I hope that the song at least "freed your minds" from some other songs that might happen to be stuck in your heads right now.

Thanks   ;D CAVEMAN  ;D

Re: Just Another Rock Video

Sorry I'm posting late, I just got home...I thought this was great! Good Job! Definitely fit the music. I'd like to see more shots of the band that's all...

I didn't know you were the same guy who did the Vacancies mv. That was awesome.

Re: Just Another Rock Video

Thanks Phil ;D
Yeah the vacancies video was mine, I just found out a couple weeks ago that it was accepted into the Indie Music Video Festival in Vancouver. Not A major triumph but it was still cool. And yeah it's always hard to balance performance/concept vids unless the song is 6 or 7 minutes long this one was only 4:18 ... very limited in time.

Thanks for the comments - ;D CAVEMAN ;D

Re: Just Another Rock Video

Caveman, good work with location and set design. I loved the visual treatments and I felt the robot was AWESOME. My favorite part was when the robot was shaking, and it falling at the end. I thought it would've been cool to have the robot shaking scene over the awesome drum solo. It would've had a nice intensity to it (the girl was arguing at this point as well so it would've made a powerful visual statement). The shot where the girl is superimposed over herself was very cool. Overall, very creative with your limited budget.

The only critique I have is that of editing. I felt it did not flow in certain parts (ie, some scenes were too long) However, overall, the editing was ok. For me , the zoom shots do not work for this video. But again, that is just my subjective opinion.

Overall, very good and creative.

Best,

Anthony

Re: Just Another Rock Video

Well I think this is the final edit and I'd like to thank everyone for helping me make up my mind about a few shots. I added the widescreen matte to compensate for some of the headroom issues that were bothering me and did away with the glowing heart effect shot. I left the piano shot in for a couple of reasons (1) These guys hauled that organ about 1000 ft. from the parking lot to the junkyard without a dolly or anything and I know I would catch so much grief if I didn't leave at least one shot in there. and (2) the singer plays the piano in all of their songs, more so than this one, and I guess they want that to be known seeing as how they are to be using this video for promotional purposes.
Cheers ;D CAVEMAN ;D

Re: Just Another Rock Video

Thanks Anthony - You must have posted while I was typing - I agree I must lay off the zoom button. I'm realizing that zooming gives an unnatural feeling to it in that it's not something our eyes do naturally like a follow focus (which is something that can be easily abused as well).
Again - Thanks for taking the time - ;D CAVEMAN

Re: Just Another Rock Video

;D Right on. Give me a heads up when it's done. Oh and watch out for bulldozers coming from behind you, and bring gas masks!!
