GH2 Just about to purchase rgrain, before I do... any free alternatives?

Thanks for the comparison, it's much appreciated.

Just a head's up a technical head's up (that doesn't affect the video itself). Did you know that both videos are showing up in the Vimeo video list (on the right hand side) without thumbnails or titles?

One small thing, that video is really hard to judge accurately simply because of web compressoin. It doesn't clearly represent what the grain does because it turns quite blocky in vimeo. Perhaps upload a small 3-5 second raw clip and altered clip for people to download?

Definitely, I agree. But just in case you missed it.

Vimeo doesn't really seem to be the best way to study grain characteristics, I recommend you download the original to actually see what it looks like, that is, for whoever's interested.

As an alternative, After Effects has two effects you can use. Add Grain and Match Grain.
We use that pretty much exclusively to replace the grain when doing VFX on films.
There are also presets in there for specific film stocks.

When I apply Indiescan using overlay in FCP 7, the contrast is dramatically affected--even with opacity set to 20%

The image above is without the grain.
Is this loss of contrast normal? Am I doing something wrong? The lowered contrast is probably a good thing in this case, but...

I use Cinegrain, always good to keep it around, used it on a few fashion films...
The 1st video has the 16mm 200T Cinegrain https://vimeo.com/27734122
This one Supernova 16mm https://vimeo.com/30076076 as well with a lot of flares and stuff that can get tiresome but just had fun with it.
Just layer composite in FCP and soften up images nicely. Big fan of it have a doc feature in post that I will be using a 35mm Cinegrain over.
Works best with B&W https://vimeo.com/31839873 images as you can see in these music video doc short I made https://vimeo.com/3270433
