Jupiter Ascending

Whatever faith I had in the Wachowski's expired many films ago but, I'll always give them the benefit of the doubt. This looks a bit too much like The Fifth Element for my comfort though. But hey, it's big scale sci-fi not based on a previous property so, gotta give them props for that.

Shouldn't we expect a lot of films to be "teal and orange" since light typically comes in 2 colors and caucasian skin in 1?

yes but many movies look overly graded these days. i was starting to think there was something wrong with my tv cause EVERYTHING new in the movies had these aggressive looks to it...indies, mainstream, any genre, whatever. it wasnt that long ago that this wasnt the case. "the station agent" was on tv yesterday and just looked "normal". im sure it was graded but wasnt "GRAAAAAAAAADEDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!".

I love the Wachowski's. The Matrix made me want to be a filmmaker. Yeah, I know that betrays how young I am : ) Iwasn't a huge fan of the Matrix sequels, but I liked Speed Racer. The subject matter of this film just feels kind of lame though. It's like a tween lit series plot.

It was OK. Better and easier to understand than Cloud Atlas.

Very much literally Fifth Element meets Dune meets Brazil.

That is very generous kind Sir.

Most folks I heard from used terms like "worst trainwreck of the year."
But I still haven't seen it - so I guess your review is encouraging.

Here's a cut n paste from another post I did on this very subject.

I watched the trailers for "Tomorrowland" and "Jupiter Ascending"
Very stoked about Tomorrowland...not so much about Jupiter Ascending.
I went to see Jupiter because it's out now...aannnddd confirmed I wasted my $ ($13.45 for popcorn and soda???...really?)

Anyway, I imagine the conversation went much like this...

Wachowski's: I know we're late but we need 40 million more to finish up.

Studio Guys: What? What for?

Wachowski's: Well, the film is so incredibly stupid, we really need to add more explosions and shaky cam moves to make the film less stupid and help cover up the dumb stuff.

Studio Guys: Is 40 mil going to be enough?

Wachowski's: We don't think so...We though about asking Mila to show her tits, which would cover up a lot of the stupid, but she said no, so we need a lot more splotions and stuff to cover up the stupid.

Studio Guys: We watched what you have so far. 40 Million and more "splotions" isn't going to help. Let's just put it out as is...

Wachowski's: Yea....That's what we thought too but just thought we would ask.

On the "teal and orange" thing above, there's definitely some of that, no doubt, but much of the movie is in natural colors. If anything, it's a motif -- it separates Earth from the alien environments. But even then, there's isn't as much of it as you'd think.

Did you see the movie, or are you just basing that on the trailer?

Saw the movie in the theater and also rented at the red box. While I'm a fan of Sci Fi, this was just the most ridiculous concept I think I've ever seen.
(not that the basic concept of turning humans into super goo is bad, but I could think of a few ways to get a lot more goo than the way it was being farmed.)
Not to mention the fact that if your aim is to "harvest" the planet when it gets full, why not stop wars, religion, epidemics, etc? (Spanish flu cut world population by 4-5 % alone 90 years ago...why not stop that?)

Ok...that was pretty crass.
But I laughed out loud and I wouldn't be surprised if that's nearly what went down. I've heard some pretty nasty private producers talk - it CAN be almost this bad.
