Juicedlink to preamp an NTG2/3 to an H4n?

I was recently given an H4n (yay!). I'd like to get an NTG-2 or 3 and accept that I need to get a preamp because of the power/level issues. I shoot with a Canon 1D4, so I am considering the Juicedlink Dt454 (or some other AGC defeater, like the Beachtek DXA-5DA)

For those situations when I'm booming and recording off camera, I was wondering how viable hooking the JuicedLink into the H4n would be? This appears to be a to-easy inexpensive and flexible... so what issues am I missing? I haven't been able to find any discussion on this type of setup, and I know everyone has lots of opinions.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

JuicedLink boxes aren't the quietest. You won't be gaining anything by going from that to the H4n. In fact, you may be decreasing your sound quality.

Also, to use one of those converter boxes means that you'll be going into the 1/8" mic in on the underside of the H4n. Not only is this a clumsy connection, considering the sub-par quality of the pre-amps in the XLR ins I cannot imagine how poor the pres in the 1/8" in are. Maybe they're the same, maybe not. I've never used that connection on the H4n. But it just seems like a really roundabout way to do things that won't actually give you much return on the effort.

You can, though you'll have to set the MixPre-D to mic level output as the H4n cannot take line-level in. This means that you're still going through the Zoom's pre-amps, but they shouldn't need to do as much work and thus won't add nearly as much noise as sending a mic directly in.

I've actually read somewhere that the DT454 into the H4N sounds very acceptable. Can't remember where this was though, or who wrote it... so...

I heard it on the internet.....
That is a risky oxymoron indeed!

Edit: Actually, you did say read it, my bad. But you get the idea.

I managed to get my hands on a mixpre-d for a short time, and am having some successes and troubles. I have it performing to some satisfaction into an H4n. However, I am having significant trouble with noise going into my canon 1d4 (via the XL3 cable). It seems I am always seeing -30db of line noise hiss when recording on the camera, regardless of microphone. Am I missing something somewhere? I thought with the XL3 cable it was just plug and play?

What is an "XL3" cable? Do you mean XLR? If so, where exactly are you connecting it and what adapters are you using where? The camera doesn't have an XLR input so you'd have to adapt an XLR cable somehow if that's what you have going to the camera. And it may well be that the hiss you hear is the inherent noise of the camera preamp - I haven't listened to a Canon so I don't know how bad they are but hiss is what noisy preamps exhibit.
