JuicedLink Preamp & Barcket DEMO - Chad Johnson

Here's a new video hot off the press. If you're into DSLR video you need to get the audio thing down. There are lots of audio solutions for video out there, but it seems that JL stuff is what I always recommend because it's clean and reasonably priced. This is a demo of a few JuicedLink products that can help get that audio captured cleanly. The DT454 and DS214 preamps, and a couple of brackets JL makes are featured here. Yes I made the jingle too just for the heck of it! I am working with a Canon T2i with magic lantern, and I am surprised at how good the audio quality is!

I've been using the DS214 with the Rode VideoMic Pro going into the T2i and really digging it. I've got it rigged with the DIY102B bracket. It's a great, compact way to get some decent audio into your DSLR.

Hi Chad, thanks for this great video, just what I was looking for. If youve got time, id like to ask one question. Ive got the t2i/550 with magic lantern and have to record some interviews at a noisy expo (interviewer and interviewed). What do you think would be the best aproach for this? Would the videomic pro be enough? JuiceLink Dt454 with handheld mic? What do you think, Ive been searching every forum an se hundred of comparison videos, but all in controlled audio ambients. Need advice for noisy xpo floor. Thanks!!!

Hi Elcarlio

I think a hand held mic like the EV RE50 N/D would work best because you can put it up to people's mouths, and you will have a better signal(their voice) to noise(the rest of the expo) ratio. The RE 50 n/d and the JL-DT450 would be great. Here's a little video I did on the RE50 n/d.

Hey, Chad!

There's a definite noise floor with the Pin Mic and G3 wireless... I noticed the same in dishe's video. It's certainly an improvement over the non-ML system, but still noticeable. It's even less with the 4053b, but not entirely gone. Have you noticed this?

Yes Alex I noticed the noise floor with the PinMic, but I have to say that's my fault. I recorded the PinMic track way too quietly, and had to turn it up a lot in post which brought up the noise considerably. If I had used more of the preamp's gain that would have been minimized. So I am sure one can get a better sound than I got in this demo. If you look at the shot where I am in front of the DSLR on the tripod, with the DT454, you'll notice the meters as I speak. The left track is the AT4053b, and the right is the wireless. You can see that the right meter is only hitting at 1 out of 4 led lights, and the left is only hitting at 2. If I wasn't trying to shoot/perform/monitor all at the same time I would have caught that and brought up the mixer level, effectively bringing down the noise on the track. Oh well! I hope my flub doesn't dissuade anyone from checking out these preamps because I think they are really clean.
