Judge my music video - Shot on FS7

So I recently directed, shot and edited this music video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XIxKhycLrE

Would love to get some feedback and constructive criticism on everything including image, coloring, cinematography, pacing and whatever you can think of.
I'll give a little background: Shot on Sony FS7 (my first time using this camera) in 4K in Slog-3. Anamorphic. Edited in Premiere Pro CC and colored in Davinci Resolve. Per usual, nothing went as planned on set so it came out completely different from what I wanted. I guess I'm okay with the final product but would love to see what people think could have been improved and what people enjoyed as the strong points of it.

Please give a guess as to what you think the budget for this was. Always curious to see if I'm getting over paid or under paid for my work haha (:

I thought that **** was fire! Couldn't guess what the budget was though, i'm a chronic undercharger as it is.

Good job! I think the harsh parts really worked when the song gets rough and the images and motion matches to convey the emotion.
What did you use for the moving shots?
Can't guess budget. Too many unknowns but I'm curious to know what it was and what all parts you were involved in. I'm guessing someone had already recorded the song and hired you to direct, shoot and edit it based on ideas.

Nice work!

I hope it is not offensive to say that I had to mostly watch it with the sound off...I just can't do the screaming-growl thing...but that's just me.

That said, I thought you did a great job on the framing, lighting and color. Some great skintones, specially on close-ups. I love seeing pores and textures os skin. I find it beautiful and honest.

I too would be curious to know more about production, behind the scenes and conception.

Thanks for sharing!

Your shots inside the dark room with the older character are spot on, hit the right mood, have all the right flare, etc. Great work.

I'm having a hard time figuring out why the shots in the past look so clean and dreamy. It's a stark contrast to what is happening in the music and I'm having a hard time understanding the mood I'm supposed to be feeling.

Also I'm not sure if Anamorphic 2.35:1 was the best choice for the older shots. Yes, the faces looked great and inviting, but it feels like it's working against the mood you're going for. Maybe something gritty, non-anamorphic super 8 look could have helped with the past feeling, but still feel uncomfortable.

The kid and dad look like they're having one hell of a time on the sand dune, and it's happening during one of the most intense parts of the song.

Don't feel bad, other people have entire music videos that don't match the feeling of their song what so ever: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJQQrjVmQG0 It's just a style I hate. Also this was during Peak Log-look too so "grading" was minimal.

I partly share that criticism ^ but overall I very much liked it. In particular: lots of very beautiful images, and the pacing was very good. Nicely done.

It looks professionally done but it looks like a LUT/color scheme I've seen a million times before. Not a fan of it.

A little too much slow motion for me. I know slow motion is trendy nowadays--sort of like time lapse was a couple years ago.

I would have liked some shots of the band playing the song mixed in.

It just has a "been there, done that" feel about it (even the song sounds like Tool from the mid-90's).

Like I said, it looks like professional work but I think it needs some fresh ideas.

Not my type of music, either, but thought it was solid. To me it looks like "talented guy with no budget or microbudget," which shouldn't be taken as an insult. Clearly your client and the audience ate it up, and you deserved whatever you were paid (and likely more!).

Agree with the above comment as far as nothing new or groundbreaking, but definitely well done.
