F35: John in Slo Motion - F35 at 60FPS via Odyssey 7Q+

thanks to convergent design - now you can go 60 FPS into their odyssey 7q - and plus - this makes it such a small camera to do this - no giant recorder anymore

this is amazing news....for the 6 people who own the f35!!!

I know I can go to 50fps with the Codex. The Codex will go higher but, as far as I know, there is no way to set the camera to above 50fps. If there is, Ed, how did you do it?

Officially the camera only does 50p, it can output 50p on a 60p though, but only 50 real frames. It should be easy to check though. But yep, the odyssey did this since it came out. XD

I loaded your clip from Vimeo in Nuke.
Assuming frames weren't modified during the upload, we see every sixth frame is a filler frame - implying 50fps source in a 60fps format.

But more importantly, the Exit sign in back is flickering. Here I am assuming your location uses 60Hz electric power, and that the Exit sign is lit with a small flourescent.
The flickering nature of the footage suggests that the camera's framerate isn't that close to 60fps.

We can start by assuming a framerate of 50fps, and use a little math to predict when the sign's brightness levels should repeat throughout the clip - to see if the scene was actually recorded at 50 fps.

Here's the math: 60hz/50fps =1.2 cycles/frame.
And 5 frames * 1.2 cycles/frame = 6cycles.
Therefore every 5 frames we should see the Exit light at the same brightness level as 5 frames back - regardless of where you start counting from. Of course, this requires ignoring any duplicate-frames.

And the assumption holds true. It's a little uncanny, actually.

In fact, while the flickering looks random, its theoretically recording just 5 different brightness values of the sign as it flickers 60cycles/sec.

Looks like MacGregor is right about the 50P limit. :)

I believe 60p is possible on the F35, but only with 2 IF boxes and 4 SDI hookups

Hi Hunter! You're getting confused with getting 50p at 444, for that yes, you'll need two IF boxes.
For 50p 422 you're ok with one.
Manual and marketing said 50p on the F35, 60p on the F23.

Macgregor is right regarding the necessity of two IF boxes for 50p at 444 out. The only exception (that I know of) being the Codex Onboard Recorder. With the Codex attached to the multipin connector I can record 50p 444 10-bit (no IF box required).

The F35 will output a 60P Signal, but not 60FPS - maximum is 50.

The F23 will do genuine 60FPS, and as the two cameras share boards that is one reason the functionality is there. That and being able to send a 60FPS signal out is useful for a number of environments.

Hey guys,

My F35 was converted from an F23, and I've just run some tests recording both 59.94p and 60p to the Odyssey7Q which seemed to be successful. Does anyone know if the converted F23's retained their ability to record 60p? Or am I just seeing padded 50p footage in a 60p container?

Cheers,

Mark

Scroll through your footage frame by frame, if you count more than 6 unique frames in a row then it is true 60P. If not you will have a duplicate frame every 6th frame I believe.

Point your camera at a timecode slate to test. If you don't have a timecode slate handy you can download an app for your smartphone. Or the stopwatch function on an iPhone is accurate enough for this.

Thanks guys, great suggestion Mitch, I'll use the timecode slate app I bought for my iPad (and never use).

F35 CCD unit will not go faster than 50P, it does not matter if you have a converted F23 or not. I have converted a F23, the hardware is identical. How many times has this come up?

I understand we are all curious people trying to get the most out of these cameras, but

Sometimes I think we need a master thread on the F35 and all the info is just to spread too far across the threads.

A variable frame rate sticky with what can be done and what hardware options there are to do it would be great. I've been trying to figure some of that out myself from digging thru the forum's backlogs. Things get more confusing since for some reason there seem to be SRW1s out there with the 103rgb board yet somehow not the 102 cache board.

May as well ask, anybody have any idea where or how to get a second IF box?
