i dunno if you realized, but both of those videos are from a year ago

Because a contract was involved it is a civil case . Fraud is VERY hard to prove.
you will get a judgement, but my guess is you will not be able to collect from the bum as per typical.....These guys know the Law,remember this is his job.

Do not dwell on this move on. It is only money . Insurance was your only recourse .It will only make you sick to keep going over and over it .

Remember of all the things that can happen to you in your life this is not a big one ...It just seem like it ..

Our family lost $500,000 from some "Wise Guys"

It usually will end this way for this type of person....One day he will do this to someone or to someone who has a relative who is crazy and will do something physical to this person it never turns out good for them ...

but you do not want that person to be you .

Larry

Here he is, using somebody's gear...

We discovered that Dono was a scam artist after contacting the Hernando police, but they were not helpful at all.
My roommate has contact both the Orange county police and the Hernando county police regarding the matter, but was told it is only a "civil case" and would have to take Dono to court.

slabbius, what did Hernando police (Sheriff's Office?) say? How were they not helpful? Were they told it was a $5000 camera? Does your roommate have the camera receipt?

Was the camera picked up in the City of Orlando, or Orange County?
He's used the "PA returned it" excuse before.

Why did Orange County say it was civil? Because there was a contract?
Because it's not just fraud for violation of a contract, it's Grand Theft (Third Degree). And he may be committing Internet Fraud.
Also, he was in court last year, I don't know what the resolution was, but he may be on the way to being a Habitual Offender:

From a Florida Lawyer's site:

Grand Theft Definition
Grand theft is the crime of taking someone else's property against their will with the intent of permanently depriving them of the property.
In order to be considered grand theft, the total value of what was taken must exceed a certain dollar amount. The value of the property stolen to constitute the crime as grand theft varies by locale and other specifics.
The term "property" in the grand theft definition can include money, labor, real, or personal property that lawfully belongs to another individual or group of individuals.

Monetary Value of Grand Theft
Thefts involving values between the range of $300 and $19,999.99 are Third Degree Felonies.
Third Degree Felony: Punishable by up to 5 years in prison and $5,000 fine. Not eligible for withhold of adjudication if two prior felony offenses.

From The State of Florida:

The 2004 Florida Statute

Title XLVI
CRIMES Chapter 775
DEFINITIONS; GENERAL PENALTIES; REGISTRATION OF CRIMINALS View Entire Chapter 775.084 Violent career criminals; habitual felony offenders and habitual violent felony offenders; three-time violent felony offenders; definitions; procedure; enhanced penalties or mandatory minimum prison terms.--
(1) As used in this act:
(a) "Habitual felony offender" means a defendant for whom the court may impose an extended term of imprisonment, as provided in paragraph (4)(a), if it finds that:
1. The defendant has previously been convicted of any combination of two or more felonies in this state or other qualified offenses.

Internet fraud
Internet fraud is any act committed via the internet whereby the offender willfully intends to deceive another in order to secure financial gain at their expense.

In an effort to reduce internet fraud, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has teamed with the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C) in developing the Internet Crime Compliant Center (IC3) to reflect the broad character of criminal activities that can take place via the internet.

Good luck, don't give up!

For those who are interested, I've just been told that a news story about alleged scammer Joe Dono will air on a major network affiliate in Florida, WFTS Tampa- ABC Action News, Friday at 11:00 p.m. Someone familiar with the story sent me the info and told me to alert the forum. Apparently it's an investigative reporter expose type of story?

The story will be posted on the WFTS website after it airs.

Wow! I am really glad I came across this thread...I'm going to be meeting him in a few months at Canon Film Makers Live in Miami! I have been following him on twitter recently and he did come across as a little shady. I'm going to start letting everyone who is attending know what the deal is behind this guy...

I think this guy truly needs to be exposed. In a community of filmakers, I'm surpised that nobody has thought to compile a video with the victim's testimonials, regarding both physical and intellectual property. If he is ripping off people financially and their videos and photos, someone needs to compile this information and post it into a video on Youtube and Vimeo. There is a lot of scattered info out there and it would be cool to have it all clearly laid out so people know.

Even Canon Film Makers Live Miami needs to know that somebody stealing someone else's work is copyright infringement and potentially fraud, I hope he is not exhibiting or doing something in an official capacity with them.

It really sicks for the victims in all of this, but it would be really nice to make sure people understand what's going on so it can be stopped once and for all. Maybe doing something like a compiled video will help more people from being scammed.

This guy needs to be held accountable and put in jail where he belongs. Maybe enough of his victims will see this and all come together to report his thefts and see him prosecuted.
