Job Hunting

Blecch. I hate it.

Theoretically, I don't have to worry about it...they'll slot me in...somewhere.

That somewhere is the problem, so in the meantime I find myslef applying for jobs hither and thither.

Some places are a LOT more thither than others.

The three most recent ones:

Texarkana TX - a place so insignificant, it doesn't even show up as a choice in CNN's cost-of-living calculator.

Ogden UT - yeah, well, I don't drink coffee, so maybe I'll slip in under the radar.

Wilmington NC - why on earth would anyone want to go there? Never even heard of the place until the job popped up in the search. Sheesh. Kinda sad when Texarkana and Ogden are more recognizable...

A lot of films & commercials were made in Wilmington NC (during the 90's at least). It is (or was, as you can tell I'm not up to date on this) a right to work state. Keeps the budget way down.

I feel your pain GenjerDan...I have been looking for work for the past several months myself. I absolutely HATE it.

I have a job. But, I want a better one. But I keep putting it off...then I'll spend a few hours searching the postings and re-tailoring my resume'....ACCCCK! I hate it.

You mean the home of Barry Green and the place that I've desperatley been trying to move to for about two years now? That Wilmington, NC? The Wilmington, NC that has the largest soundstage outside of Hollywood? The Wilmington, NC that is a short 10 minutes away from the beach?

Perhaps that helped a little bit. :)

And by the way, your Utah joke made me do a spit take.

:)

He (They? Is John there, too?) probably have nothing to Fear. It's unlikely I'll get the job.

I've been applying for these things steadily the past two years with not even a nibble resulting. It's not just me, either. Co-workers in the same position have been doing the same, with the same (lack of) results.

Sucks, big time.

Financially speaking, any of the three above-mentioned would be nice-ish. According to CNN, I run from twice the local median income to about 30% more...and that's including my $20K pay cut when I come back to the States.

Other places applied: both KC & STL, MO. :) Huntsville, San Antonio, Yuma, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Birmingham, Scottsdale AZ, Albuquerque, Louisville (Knox, actually), and a bunch I've already forgotten.

If they end up sending me to DC before I find a job on my own, I'm gonna sneak into their houses and puke in their sock drawers.

You might want to do a little reading on Wilmington, NC. I haven't spent a lot of time there, but it has a film industry, is amazingly beautiful, by the beach, close to the Outter Banks (possibly the coolest place in the entire US) and would be very high on my list. Lifestyle/Culture may be a bit different than what you are used to in Germany.

I'm 4 minutes from the beach, thank you. :)

was asking Eastside Parkway ... and was going to tell him that as cool as living at the beach may be ... he can't possibly "win," because wherever it is ... probably isn't as cool as living in Wilmington.

I filmed a documentary on the Battleship North Carolina which is stationed in Wilmington. Got to work with this cool crew called Cape Fear FX. They were telling me stories about the Brandon Lee incident while shooting the Crow and how Steve Buschemi got stabbed in the head at a local bar. Dawson's Creek was shot in Wilmington.

In 2003, it sounded like a lot of film was outsourced to Canada from Wilmington. A lot of locals had anti-canada shirts and bumber stickers.

A lot of it moved to Louisiana. But there are at least three major films and "One Tree Hill" being shot here right now.

We're actually shooting a segment at the bow of the North Carolina in a few weeks.

I hear you ... I hear you.

Good luck with it. I hope you find someplace that works well for you.

I can see the beach from my house.

I win.

That doesn't mean anything, you can roll out of bed onto the beach in Coney Island but they are all low income housing projects...

I have been looking for work also but nothing but entry level jobs and "good to build resume" bull crap.

I live on Cape Cod.

I've been to Wilmington. It's a great place, but I still think I win. :)

ROFL. I can see the Hudson River from my commuter train station. All I can see from my house is that the %$#^* crabgrass is winning.

I'll be at the Cape in about 2 weeks. Looking forward to it. Also an amazing and beautiful place.

Wrightsville Beach doesn't have the buildup or reputation that Cape Cod has, but I'll tell you what -- I know where I'd rather be in January.
