Jittery pans

HI,

I just did a few tests with the FS100 today.
I shot at 25 fps and did slow pans on the tripod
with different shutter speeds (25, 50, 100, etc.).

No matter the shutter speed, all the pans look quite jittery.
Even really slow pans.

Is there anything I can do about it? Doesnot seem to be
the shutter speed and the pans were quite smooth on a nice tripod.

If there is no chance to fix the problem in camera, what are the best
solutions to get rid of the jittery effects in post?
Any plugins, any other suggestions?

Thank you!

If you search the archives you will find many threads about motion cadence and various theories and ideas. It's quite difficult to help because what you're seeing needs to be quantified. All things can strobe, it's the degree and subject matter that affects it. Yes some people really don't like the 'Sony Cadence' but frankly IMHO it's never been full quantified and could just come down to personal vision and preference.

There are of course potential issues with the way you're viewing the footage - if you're not viewing on a broadcast monitor being fed by a video signal then you may be seeing stuttering on your PC or Laptop, or at least imprecise frame durations.

Hi Paul,

thanks for the answer.
First I was watching the MTS files, in QT and VLC.
I just realized that it gets much better after converting the movies to Prores 422.
Still a bit jittery, but now it is in the "normal" range of jitter that I expected.

Thanks for your response!

Frank was having jittery pan issues with 25p when the camera came out but guys with the 24p camera weren't noticing it so maybe try 24p and see if there's any improvement.
