Hey people! I'm going to buy a Jib or camera crane and of course I have to get some kind of monitor to attach to the tripod to see what the hell I'm shooting. Any suggestions? and where is the output from the camera?

Re: Jib monitor

Yeah, buy a cheap handheld TV from Radio Shack and stick it to your tripod with velcro. That's what I do and it works fine. I mean, I'm not looking at a monitor that size for color and exposure, it's just for framing purposes.

Re: Jib monitor

Disjecta, does it work well for focusing and how much would you estimate it weighs?

Re: Jib monitor

You are setting yourself up for a nightmare if you intend on doing critical focussing and operating a jib. Shoot as close to f16 as you can and keep the focal length at 4.5, that way everything is in focus. Anything more than that and you need a full-blown field monitor. It's absolutely minimum weight...after all, it's for handheld viewing.

Now I'm not going to say that this works for everyone but for my needs it's been sufficient.

Well, yes. Unless you're a teeny tiny person and can ride up there along with the no-remote-focus camera. ;)

Re: Jib monitor

Guys!!! Buy the Jensen B&W 5.5" TV at Target for $30.00 and you won't regret it... if you do I'll pay for it!!! It is lightweight, uses DC from car, standard AC PSU included or 10 C batteries (not included). It has brightness and contrast adjustment in the back (which I recommend you tweak to your taste), RCA video+audio inputs. And if you get bored it is a TV and radio combo!!! The only thing you need to work with is the attachement to you crane (which is not difficult for creative people like us! ;D ).

Cheers!

Re: Jib monitor

Gualbert,
How much time do you get from the C batteries? This may be just what I need this weekend for a remote shoot in the woods (gonna be without power).

Thanks,
Jon

Re: Jib monitor

Well, I used it with batteries only once (darn C batteries, why are they so expensive?) so I can't say for sure how much they last for. I got around 5 hours , maybe a hair less... so depending on how hot it is where you will be shooting you may get less juice! You can't beat this for the price! The image (B&W of course) is pretty decent for $30 and it is CRT! I bought it thinking I was going to return it but I was wrong. I tested also a Radio Shack LCD TV they carry, don't remeber the brand, it goes for $130 but it is NOT suitable for the application. Contrast is pretty bad in the Radio Shack's LCD TV. The Target's JENSEN in the other hand manages beautifully for $100 less! No, I don't work for Target! LOL!
