Jessi Slaughter, or How I Learned to Hate the Internet

Wow! I just watched a little bit of a couple of the clips in the link and I'm shocked. The way the entire family speaks is appalling.
Not passing judgment, just shocked at what I'm seeing here.

The entire thing is a nasty train wreck but luckily I was able to look away and not get too into it. I do feel sorry for the lot of them though.

Crazy.

I hate to incite further rage on this topic, I'm perhaps too young and shouldn't be speaking about this myself (and no I'm not trying to justify harrassment), but seriously:

Why is no one questioning the kid? I'm not gonna pretend to have been a "clean kid" at her age, but I too had a webcam and computer, and this simply never happened. The internet is indeed different today, but even back then, it was common sense to not make a fool of yourself, nor to give out your personal information. There's likely a REASON that 4chan was capable of obtaining her information. Uneducated parents, who fail to educate their children on how to use the internet are often overlooked.

One doesn't accomplish anything worthwhile in a teaching environment by ridiculing one's students.
DVXUser is primarily a teaching environment. Learning from each other, sharing experiences, building others up, building oneself up.

The concept behind the public ridicule is to motivate people to make an effort to educate themselves or to seek improved education.
Maybe so, and maybe somewhere else. What we've found over the past 7+ years of running this place is -- you reap what you sow. Sow ridicule, you grow a board of ridiculers. Sow helpfulness and support, and you grow a board of supportive helpful members. We prefer the latter.

Considering the application of mockery and ridicule to anti-drug and anti-tobacco campaigns, the principle might be sufficiently well-entrenched to try it on anti-ignorance, too.
In a private blog or other non-DVXUser-related environment, maybe. But that's not consistent with the values we promote here.

That's one of the generation gaps that starting to finally close, though. A lot of parents don't KNOW how to use the internet, and those that do stay clear of a lot of stuff out there. It's boredom that pushes kids to spend hours and hours a day on the internet, and they decide to make accounts on youtube, facebook, twitter, myspace, et al. Most kids have all of these, not to mention numerous other accounts that parents don't know about.

My parents are pretty internet savvy, especially for people their age (60ish). However there are a lot of parents that don't know about the internet and think that google, wikipedia and facebook might be the only sites out there. They're not aware of the millions of differing opinions and the ease it is to find them.

The bottom line is I GUARANTEE she knows more about the internet than they do. That's how it's going to be for a while, as well. I was 15 when we got our first computer that was hooked up to the internet (1996), and I was well on my way to understanding more about the world than my parents. It won't be until my generation has teenagers that parents will know what to be looking for on the internet, but by that point there will be something else out there that our kids are getting into that WE don't understand.

Yeah but before long there will be the AI-driven OVERNET, which today's teenagers will find utterly baffling even as *their* tweens clamber aboard, twenty years from now...

OK, now that Barry has elevated the level of discussion to where it should be, education, we need some educators.

Somebody (Sad Max?
icon10.gif
) to teach Rainbow Lady the principles of refraction, and the dangers of living a life ruled by conspiracy theories...

And we need somebody (a parent, which rules me out) to teach the "Slaughter" family about the dark side of the internet, and how to control your kid's web use. Those parents obviously need to learn a lot more, especially when, in the interview, the mother says 3 times concerning the videos:

"... The officer was really rude and my daughter kept denying that she made any videos."
"...The officers had said there were videos but Jess denied making them. But I haven't watched them. I can't be in the room 24/7..."
"... I don't even know what these videos show and I don't want to view them..."

Huh? You don't know what's on the videos, and don't want to know? That your potty mouthed child is stirring up an ant's nest on the internet? And that the more you stir (or scream at) the ant's nest, the worse it gets?

The kid's videos are what (unfairly) triggered the onslaught, and the mother won't even acknowledge that there are videos, and won't watch them. Why?

The computer's webcam needs to be disabled or painted over.

Change your phone number.

Dad needs anger management classes.

And the family needs to keep the kid from being cyber-bullied, by keeping the kid off the web. Period.

I don't gloat over something like this.
I shake my head. Sadly.

I don't need to be a parent to teach parents about the dangers the net poses to their children.

This is me. Take a good, looooooong look. This is my browsing cache. It's basically a catalog of what I'm after when I'm on the net. Take a good look-see there, too.

Now, that internet thing your daughter is on? Well, I'm out there, waiting for her.

Any questions?

Virus alert!!!

Virus alert!!!

FYI!

Teflon's original link put a nasty, debilitating virus on my work's PC!

BE CAREFUL!

Sadly, that's at the heart of a lot of problems. Parents don't want to take responsibility for their kids' actions. She's an 11y/o... by default she's going to be immature and do stupid stuff. And the mom is right, she can't be with the daughter 24/7, but that doesn't mean you should set up a situation where your daughter get's free reign when you're not around. And when you're kid screws up, own up to it.

It's truly cruel what some are doing to the family, but the sad fact is that it's a cruel world, and you need to accept that fact and take precautions, rather than sitting there saying "but my daughter denies she made videos". The parents are supposed to be adults. Be proactive about what's going on in your daughter's life instead throwing your hands in the air saying "well, I just can't be around her 24/7". [/rant mode]

That said, I'm glad this is making the rounds. Not because the family needs anymore humiliation... if they haven't figured out the lesson yet, they're not going to. But hopefully other parents can learn something from this before this sort of crap happens to them, even if on a smaller scale.

Yeah.

I clicked on it in IE and the status bar on the bottom kept showing it was downloading stuff. Then this "Virus Protection" software started to "Scan my system".

When I see that kind of stuff I immediately launch Task Manager and End Task. I don't click on ANYTHING in the unknown app, but I couldn't even launch TM! I had to unplug my PC. When I rebooted, I couldn't run anything- every app said it was infected. The only thing that would happen was that same Virus app would run and again, no TM.

I had to call our IT guy.

People who write viruses should be shot in the face with a scatter gun and left in the desert to rot.

I use a Mac at home:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
