Jeremy Rall interview about HDSLRs: Director of R.Kelly, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z & more

these kinds of stories kind of bug me. for one thing, its a very thin interview and only really goes into the good points of the workflow (it almost feels like a canon sponsored interview)

secondly, i think that a large segment of readers of this interview (younger r&b fans, drunk on the cheap buy-in of dslr video) isnt going to fully absorb the context. they are likely going to think. "hey, i wanna do music videos, and if this hot-shot likes xyz camera. then im gonna get one too", and think thats all there is too it. i encounter these people literally every other time i go into a computer or camera store...

rail is often working in budgeted shoots at scouted locations, with full crew and grip. worst case scenario, hes an experienced pro and he knows what hes up against. and id gamble that he has contingency gear available in the event that he encounters problematic situations.

im not saying that what this guy is saying is misleading or incorrect. simply that it only represents the shiny side of the coin. and leaves readers with only part of the picture.

I just might have to make this my sig...... WGZN I think you should calm down and kick your feet up for once...... Any person that is not experienced will put out poor material. If a non experienced person were to handle a red I'm more than sure the footage would not be good either. I see this as a good thing and not bad , even though I personally have a problem of people who think they can buy a 7d and call themselves a director.... That title is only earned through experience and being very talented , regardless of what equipment you use.

If not a dslr, what next? big sensors, cheap cameras - it works if you know what your doing. YouTube video looks the same even if it was done on a red (you know what I mean).

I've got to agree with WGZN here, I can see that using 5/7D's would be very useful in those car shots he talks about in the interview. But I would guess that the DP isnt using DSLRs for the other shots through choice, if there's proper budget then no-one would, and that this choice is more to do with there not being enough budget for better kit. Not being funny, but it's R Kelly, I don't think his promo budget is going to be as enormous as you think it is. And the video looks cheap anyway!

We learned that when we started shooting and the current crop of filmmakers will realize that there are no shortcuts and that everybody has to pay dues on the learning curve to get quality footage by making mistakes and logging hours of shooting. All interviews like this do is explain that camera technology is no longer the limiting factor the way it was for aspiring types the same way it was prior to the DV era.

I don't under estimate the ingenuity and resourcefulness of up and coming filmmakers who will be able to shoot some incredible footage despite not having a full crew or years of hard knocks because they will not think that that they can't. Youthful enthusiasm, bravado, ingenuity and creativity can trump a lot of that. I am always excited and re-energized in those rare instances when it does.
