Jeep or Truck

Re: Jeep or Truck

..all my cohorts have jeeps. the wranglers are nice, if your hopping around or hanging out with chums, but not a good family veh at all. i would look into getting a newer cherokee sport. i know its not on your list, but its sort of the best of both worlds. a little more plush, and will still get you where you need to go off the road. ..espescially if outfitted right. they are pretty much as capeble as a wrangler. they look nice- have lots of room for gear. ive had an offroad isuzu trooper, and an offroad mazda b2600 shortbed (it looked kinda like biff's truck in back to the future) and had my friends 84' bronco with 40" tires on it (thing was a monster) for a while and his cherokee, and have done plenty of real off roading with water over the hood coming in the windows, and mud half way up the doors, and driving through ponds and streams and over other cars and down and up cliffs and through woods and sand and sleet and snow and stuff. we never got real extreme and did rock climbing or anything, but coutless times weve had to pull out a Fire engine winch to pull us out of some sort of hopeless looking situation. but at leaast they wereent normally our only veh so we could afford to have them be a little out of commision from time to time. last time i went out i bottomed out my trooper with the chassis sitting on an ice layer when all 4 wheels broke through the ice to the some odd 3+ feet of snow beneath. needless to say it was stuck .. bad. i could barley get through the ice to try and dig it out it was so thick. and now i drive a car that couldnt go over a curb without breaking somthing or falling apart..its a real .. um.. well lets just say that like you my wife drives the nice family veh, and i drive the "other car". ... anyway if not a cherokee, id personally go for the wrangler.

Re: Jeep or Truck

Rich,

I've heard good things about the Disco 3 - we're set to review one in the next few weeks. Like the P38, I don't think it's destined to become a trail rig. Let's face it, most Rovers don't get used the way I use mine. Few Jeeps do either.

Jeeps have really improved over the early Wrangler models, and it's good to see them re-invent the Scrambler. I still wouldn't want to take a long trip in a Jeep - they're cramped and offer a very unrefined ride. Ergonomically, even the Grand Cherokee has a fit and finish more befitting a mid-eighties Ford or Dodge product.

On the other hand, our friend could get into a gently used mall crawler Discovery II for around $15 - $18k. Like a Jeep product, hundreds of aftermarket parts are available to make it whatever he needs it to be - and he won't break something every time he ventures off the highway.

This is just my opinion of course... ;)

Re: Jeep or Truck

..jeeps do seem to break alot. :-/. it seems like at least once a month someones jeep needs to be fixed.

Re: Jeep or Truck

If you want a "smooth ride," the Wrangler isn't it. It has the ride of a Matchbox car. God help you if you ever cross uneven railroad tracks at more than a creep.

Re: Jeep or Truck

As a Wrangler owner, I must say, the extended cabs are a travesty. get a regular sized cab, or the truck.

Ya bastid.
