Japanese style horror film- scene settings?

I realize this could be a broad range of looks, but I was wondering if anyone had any scene setting suggestions on what would look good on a film that is very similar to Ringu or Ju-on?

Those should be added when you Color correct it so the settings shouldn't matter.
but when you are shooting a horror movie, I guess you would be shooting with minimal lighting so the master ped should be set to -10 or -15.
I've never done it but I've seen nice footage shot with the DVX that had the master ped to -15 by renegadewill.
it had the very rich looking blacks in the dark areas and no noise at all.

let me post the thread.

I agree, most of the looks can be added using color correction in post. Like in "The Matrix" the green kind of look was color correction. Either that or else some filters offer different types of looks. All personal preference. Some people try and film what they want directly while others do all the tweaking in post.

yeah, if it's the effect you're after then go for it.
it all depends what you want.
remember you're the director!

for horror films some people actually add the grain in the footage to have that creepy look so it all depends. good luck

Yo ryvac thanks for the repost of that video, I'm touched. Yo jayr, ryvac is right about the master ped, if you want black blacks it's an easy way to go.

Definitely. I did a camera test and loved the -10 on the master ped. Ryvac knows his stuff.

haha, thanks but remember,

so yeah, credits go to renegadewill.
it's just stuff I all learned here, I never done it before

Maybe; maybe not. Some people like to get the exact look they want in-camera and not do it in post.

No. :) You use just as much light as you would for anything else (cameras need light) -- you just use it differently.

well yeah, you always need light but I usually don't use a fill light when I'm doing dark tone movies. I only try to show as minimal as possible so you get that unknown scare..:Drogar-Dum(DBG):.

thanks guys. this was actually the first time I ever played with any kind of lighting whatsoever. thats the one thing i have been missing in any film, so i happened to play around with a few work lights and fluorescents.. i will say this however the setting of the camera helps alot. but without the proper lighting its most likely going to look horrible.. this was actually a learning process for me though, shot a horrible school film for a friend of mine but it looks better than most anything ive shot before. lol sad.

oh and btw theres no color correction in those grabs just a tad bit of desaturation. i loved the way it turned out in camera.

Another attempt from last night, shooting a max payne style film just to test lighting.. may have overkilled it this time put I tweaked the contrast pretty good. for some reason I love the very harsh shadows....btw did i mention I hate muzzle flashes... ugh.. I will pay anyone who wants to do it for me. lol
