This weekend I saw a Japanese DVD called "Vibrator" (2003) shot on the AG-DVX100 (original version).  It is in Japanese with English titles available in Japan (not sure if it has been released internationally yet, though it was entered into several festivals according to the previews included on the DVD and the web site below.) It is an art house film and is a great example of current film making in Japan, but interesting and unique.

The footage looks like 24p. The film takes place largely on the road in a wide range of ligting situations. Some scenes are simply beautiful and VERY film like.

The cast are well known Japanese talent and the film is based upon a famous novel.  As there are shots from the air, a well known director, cast and crew, (suggesting a decent budget) it seems that their choice to shoot on DVX100 may have been a creative one. This film has been in the top DVD rental rankings for months since its release.

At the end of the credits there is a special thank you to the AG-DVX100.

If you can find it please check it out. It is a nice example of what the camera can do in professional hands.

can I see a clip maybe?

I love Japanese flicks, they have that xtra crispyness, sharp edges, I like the type of tone they get, NOT SEEN EVER in a north american film

I also like Doraemon

Not sure where you could download a clip from. The movie is on DVD here. I rented it a few nights ago and don't have a copy or clips. A search on Amazon didn't hit any DVDs in the US. I know it has been making the indie art house circuit including Vancouver, Seattle and other sites. May be playing in some art house theatres stateside.

Recently there has been a significant upsurge in interesting film here. Sadly looks like only a slight few are making it out internationally and sadly most of them are J-horror flicks. Some of the best short film, drama and creative pieces are not released abroad. But some do have subtitles in English.

I happened to catch this movie at the Vancouver International Film Festival in 2003. It was a little dreary for my taste but it did have some nice shots. About 80% of the finished film is from the Panasonic Varicam and about 20% is the DVX100. The director said he used the DVX mostly for close-up shots of inside the cab of the truck. At the time I saw the movie, I had no idea it was done in digital and didn't notice anything unusual about the look. For close-up photography, the DVX transfers really well to film. And, of course, the Varicam material looks spectacular.
