Hi everyone,
so about a week ago I ordered a DVX-100a from an online dealer called Digital Liquidators. I paid $2465 for what I thought was the standard camera.
Today I got the cam in the mail and I opened it up. Everything is in japanese! is this normal? this is my first dvx, so i don't know if they all look like this, or if i got dooped.
does anyone recognize this packaging, or know anything about a japanese model?
please please advise me!
thanks!

here are pics of the packaging...

You got jacked. Maybe. Rule of thumb that you may have heard before- if it looks to good to be true, then it probably is.

I don't know what the consequences of having a japenese model is but you don't have warrenty, thats for sure. Also I don't like what your second photo suggests ("Due to Japanese Standard, this set is not suitable for any foreign country") Do the Japanese use something other than NTSC or PAL?
As to what you should do? Try to get your money back and return it. Unless it does what you want it to do and you are willing to risk it without any warrenty.

By the way I suggest you don't cross post, these folk get mighty ornery 'bout that.

its only japanese wrighting on the box!?

if the camera (not box or manual) is all in english then why worry, you got it, and its brand new!

think of it like a second hand DVX in immaculate condition.

where did you get it from? its costing me $4000us to own one here in australia, and thats the best price!

Japan is NTSC. As for the Japanese in the 3rd pic, it's just an inventory of what should be in the box (AC adapter, screws, microphone holder, etc.).

would it matter if it was pal or ntsc if the end purpose is to shoot 24p which they both do anyway..?

It is disheartening to hear of your misfortune. However, its time to turn your lemons into a tasty tasty lemonaide( im such a loser!). You could try to return it, but this is the "Gray Market" we're talkin about here...I mean c'mon. So I advise you to do two things. Buy Barry's book and then download the dvx's English manual...im sure its in a pdf form out there somewhere.

The PAL cam doesn't have a 24p setting. It shoots 25p (close enough, though).

That sucks. A few people on here have done the same thing. I lucked out and found this site before I purchased.

Don't worry, I got my dvx100a from Japan and it works fine. The only problem you have is the warranty. If something happens to it you have two choices. 1 YOU HAVE TO SEND IT BACK TO Japan ON THE INTERNATIONAL WARRANTY OR GET IT FIXED OUT HERE IN THE STATES WITHOUT ONE (LOTS OF MONEY).

GOOD LUCK :thumbup:

DIGITAL LIQUIDATORS + A&M PHOTO WORLD + BROADWAY PHOTO = ALL THE SAME SHADY PLACE.

look at the below bbb and reseller ratings links

BBB NY - a&m photo world - better business bureau 'unsatisfactory rating by bbb' also dba. broadway photo and digital liquidators

RESELLER RATINGS - digital liquidators 0.14 rating! 192 unsatisfied customers who left neg feedback [same company as a&m photo world and broadway photo, more neg ratings]

RESELLER RATINGS - a&m photo world 0.30 rating! not even 1.0 out of 10!!! damn! 573 unsatisfied customers who left neg feedback, thats saying something...

then after that, hit these two threads...

READ THIS BEFORE BUYING A DVX100a

read those threads! it may help you decide what you should or shouldnt do in your situation...

are you sure? if thats true, then the tables have turned and region1'ers would get the better deal over pal user's most hailed 25fps.

however according to this site, http://www.entique.com.au/products.aspx?category=digital camcorder the pal version does shoot at 24p!

Key Features

* 1/3" 3-CCD Mini-DV camcorder with exclusive CineSwitch™ technology.
* Outstanding sensitivity: F11 @2000 lux, min illumination: 3 lux (at +18dB).
* Supports 480i/60 (PAL), Cinema-style 480p/24fps, and 480p/30fps image capture.

which one is right? sales do get it wrong i know!

I bought my DVX100 on eBay. They told me it had 400 hours on it which I thought was fine. They send me the camera; it has 181 hours on it. It's PAL. I call them and tell them their listing is in NTSC. They said send the camera back and they'll give me an NTSC one. I do that. They pay for shipping all ways via FedEx ground. They send me an NTSC model, it only has 120 hours on it. Everything is brand new, no scratches anywhere. I got my heads cleaned (because they used Panny tapes but all my tapes stock is already Sony). I've been using my camera and it's worked beautifully. I did mess around with the PAL camera and I could get it to go into 24P mode, only 25P mode. None of my NTSC tapes would work in there so I dedicated an entire tape to PAL. Good thing tapes are cheap. I've had no problem buying stuff off eBay. I bought a battery off eBay that was 4000mAh for $21. Works great, several hours of use. Maybe just 2 hours, havne't timed it. Then I found out about the 5600 mAh batteries sold here and I bought a pair of those. Thanks BTW.

thanks for your help everyone.

i decided to call digital liquidators and ask for an RMA because they blatantly sent me a product i had not intended to buy. they did hassle me a bit, but finally agreed to refund my credit card if i'd send the camera back and "if everything is in proper order".
so i took pictures showing that i barely even touched the camera, repackaged it up, and sent it on its way yesterday. it should be getting there late next week, so i am anxious to see what the results will be. i wonder if once it gets there they will then deny refunding my card. these guys seem pretty shady.
also, the customer service rep told me that my shipping ($180!) would NOT be refunded. i argued this, and he finally agreed to "see what he could do". that would be some serious BS if I had to pay shipping on something that I was tricked into buying.
so now I am stuck w/o a DVX, and the summer dvx rebate is about to end. should i wait till they refund my card before springing for a "legit" DVX from WILLOUGHBYS (and most likely miss the rebate)?
speaking if which, has anyone had any good/bad experiences with WILLOUGHBYS?

thanks again people! this is a great community!

$180 for shipping from brooklyn to seattle? these guys [digital liquidators] are outta control.
ps, did you call your credit card company? it may be a good idea just to inform them that you recd a fraudulent product. tell em you returned it already, and to dispute any charges from them.

the rebate is extended from legit authorized dealers til sept.
willoughbys has some questionable stuff going on with them too, read those threads above... it should answer all of your questions on where to buy.

hope that helped.
t :grin:

I've never heard of a credit card that provided any level of fraud protection for mail order purchases.
I would wait until you get your money back before buying a different camera.

That is crazy, I bought mine from B&H last month and paid $35 for 2 day shpping from New York to California. I wonder why they charge so much for shipping? :undecided

Because, with all the "scam shops", they will get you somewhere! They advertise false, fraudulent prices, and then rip you off in every imaginable way, whether by charging extortionate shipping prices, or extortionate prices on accessories like batteries and filters, they will get you. They will rip you off. And if you don't let them rip you off, they will never send you the product; they'll just play the "oh, it's out of stock" game with you until you either a) cancel, or b) renege and give in to their overpriced accessories, at which point the product is magically "in stock" again!

It is really amazing to me that anyone would even choose to deal with these places. It's just nutty. Go to a reputable dealer (B&H or EVS) and get treated right and get the product you pay for and get a warranty and get a rebate and get the book/dvd and get the magic bullet software and get the box of AMQ tapes, instead of trying to "game the system" whereby all you get is hassle. And a $180 shipping charge.

And oh, just wait until you get whacked $450 for a "restocking charge". That's coming too.
