January DVXfest Shorts

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

I have to agree with the Barry's on this one; it works even though technically the line was violated like an Orphan on Sundays.

Even on the approach EST shot the camera jumps from the LEFT to the RIGHT; when they are talking, the camera hangs dangerously close on it.

Here's the deal:

It is very important this rule of 180. It has been established for a reason and if not used carefully it can disorient your audience when you least want them to be.

Can you break it? Of course. Rules are meant to be broken. But as I always say "You have to understand the rules and why they are there before you can break them." because if you do not know these rules? Then you can get into a world of shite in POST.

Antomic might have noticed it and was well to point it out and even though we can look at this and say "You can get away with this on this one..." another casual observer just might for a second get yanked out of your magic reality you have created.

Learn the rule! You got away with it this time, but next time you might find yourself screwed.

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

There was something about disjecta's film that I couldn't quite put my finger on... but I just figured it out! It is very Amelie-esque.

Anyone else pick up on that?

WOW! Thanks Barry. You made my day. I'm kicking around ideas for Feb. With a theme AND an object, PLUS the prize being something I already own...dunno. Plus, there is some real stiff competition showing up to these gigs. And I'm really all talk. I just got lucky with Poker Night.  ;)

And thanks for helping me not feel like a turd Hudson. :D

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

I just watched Amelie again, 2 nights ago. Too bad I don't speak French. I had to keep taking my eyes off of the wonderful images to read the frickin' subtitles!

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

I just realized something. ...I broke the 180 degree rule about 40 times in Full Circle.  ;D hehehehe

John - Amelie is a masterpiece. A true zombie horror classic. (Shhhhh everyone, I'm trying to talk him into seeing it.)

antOmic,
it was definitely not my intention to make you feel like a turd. i was just frustrated at my ignorance. every movie or show i've watched for the past two days all i can think about is the 180 rule and i don't think i've seen it broken once yet. but i'm not sure i'd notice if it was because breaking it doesn't seem to automatically make things disjointed. perhaps its just one of those things we are subconsciously trained to see because we watch so many movies and most of them follow the rule. like how most people will recognize 24p as being more "film like" even if they have no idea what 24p is". maddening.

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

Thanks Michael. Again, I only mentioned it, as it stood out. And again, I did say it wasn't really that noticeable. This is the best place to get true constructive criticism with a "job well done" approach. I really don't think I'm a turd, but I certainly hope that any comments I make here are for all of us to learn from, including myself.

I LOVED your short, as I've said before, and if greeches hadn't put so much work in to his film, you would have gotten my vote.

So next month, when I enter, you can almost give me your vote. ;D

I assure you; you would notice and it definately makes things disjointed. Imagine staring at a movie screen and an actress looking to the right (just past you and over your right shoulder) while she talks with an actor.

Cut to

The Actor, looking to the right (just past you and over right shoulder).

Get it?

In fact, take your DVX and shoot a small scene and follow the rules. Then, film it again and jump that line purposely and compare the edits.

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

Here's my .0002 cents worth, in the order I watched them:

Timed Romance-it held my attention throughout, but I got the story muddled partway thru somehow. But it jsut helped prove my theory that the monster under the bed we have as children always seem to become the boogeyman in the shower when we're grown.

Full Circle-really nice technique, but I kept waiting for something to happen. Left me empty, which may be the whole point. The character kept waiting for something to happen too, and the fact we never see 'him' makes me think he is an emotional no-show.

How Do You Feel About People-gave me the creeps the whole way thru, like if the teddy bear is a boy, why does he have his and Beth's the 'baby' in HIS belly? Was this bear supposed to be the guy's conscience and he actually kicked someone else in the pregnany belly? In any case, it was a little disturbing and more than a bit macabre.

Being Disjecta-Very very funny!! Love the shot in the rain and the deadpan look into the camera! But wished we'd gotten more mishaps in the field that surely must pre-empt those lovely flawless films you give us.

BoBo Robot vs Ninja Wang-loved the fx and everything about it, but wished there was a story arc somewhere. Even in that small of a clip, I got a sense of who the characters might be, but no clue to what the story between them could be.

Below the Belt-I enjoyed this one very much. The sound was a little off, but what a way to tell the story of such a brief encounter. I loved the boxing analogy and the way one played out the other. Very entertaining. I loved the way we got all the emotions of the main character, from the overconfident "yeah baby" look in the boxing ring, right before he's punched in the face to the grudging respect he has for the ice queen when he realizes his fly is open. Great piece to me!

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

About the 180-degree rule... think about it, it simulates reality.  When you're live and watching a conversation between two people, you can only see them both from one side -- draw a line between them, and you *must* be on one side or the other of that line.  Which is why when filming a conversation, you want your camera to do the same thing. If in your film you jump to opposite sides of that line, it will not simulate "reality" -- it'll be disorienting.

When filming action between two people, you draw an imaginary line between them, and keep the camera on one side of that line.  There are legitimate ways to get to the other side if necessary -- you can have the camera actually running and execute a dolly or tracking move that crosses the line, for example.  Or if you cut "on the action" you can mask the disorientation effect.  But just jumping over to the other side is a general no-no.

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

Last month there were 80 votes total (between the 2 polls). Looks like this month we're going to surpass that. Yipeee!!! ;D

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

I voted for Disjecta.

Several reasons ? of course !

1- the kids need to eat.
2 - the fridge needs true food.
3 - there is a sequel (very clever) ;D
4 - Mr Lucas called him
5 - He has a chair with his name
6 - he wears glasses
7 - they drink champagne
8 - I want to see the girl at the end of the volume I (nice legs)
9 - It was the first "non-natural" movie from Disjecta I've seen excepted the (great) night driving sequence.

last but not least
10 - I just liked it.

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

I agree. IN fact; damn it Djis. No more nature videos. Only narrative from now on. You have talent Mister!

Okay, you can have nature stuff; but can't you throw in some camp counselors and a dude in a hockey mask at least?

Re: January DVXfest Shorts

Always with the frickin' hockey mask, Hudson. :D

Thanks to all who have voted for me so far.
